Chapter 283: His scapegoat.

Chalice.

For a couple of minutes, all I felt was fear. A crippling fear that rendered me immobile and made it impossible for me to move or breathe.

My hands gripped at the armrests— if that’s what I can call these uncomfortable metal bars— of my chair, and my breath hitched in my chest as I looked into the hazel eyes of the man whose voice was enough to send tremors down my spine.

He beamed a smile at me— one that I found more eerie than beautiful— and then spat; "Cat got your tongue?"

I shook my head. More like my fear got my tongue.

My eyes filled with more tears as I slowly melted into my chair, and shaking my head, I whispered; "What do you want?"

"What do you think I want?" He seethed but before I could respond, he added; "Nothing. There’s nothing you can possibly give to me. I am just here because my friend needs my help."

"Your help?" I rasped, my voice sounding hoarse.

And at my words, he nodded briskly before turning away, a look of pure irritation fleeting past his gaze before he taped it down. "Are you as dumb as you’re evil?"

Again I shook my head.

"So what do you find so difficult in my words that you cannot simply understand it?"

A cold shiver ran down my spine just as my gaze met his, and it wasn’t until that moment that I finally realized... that it finally dawned on me that he had never lied to me. He was a splitting image of Jennifer... and now, looking at him with his eyes boring holes into my skull, I couldn’t help but fear that this was my karma.

I mean, I could literally see Jennifer’s face in his. I could remember the way she’d pleaded with me that night. How she’d held on to my dress when her knees hit the floor. And how... how she had screamed when the boys I’d arranged descended on her.

Louis had gone first.

Then Gerald.

Then there was Pius and Luke, the twins... and those vagabonds who I’ve never met in my life.

A shudder ran through my veins at the memory and I sighed. "I’ve told you times without numbers that I do not have anything to do with Jennifer’s death..."

"Then what about the video evidence I have?" He spat, causing me to clamp my lips shut.

Tears filled my eyes, but at this point, I couldn’t possibly say what I was crying for. I couldn’t tell if I was simply frustrated or scared. All I knew was that I wanted to be as far away from here as possible.

"Will you confess or do I have to get it out from you?"

"Confess to what?" The earlier guard hissed, "for starting the fire or for something else?"

At his words, we both turned to look at him and I saw the way Jon rolled his eyes before turning away. "For killing my sister." He answered without a moment’s hesitation.

This time, the other guard went silent, his eyes kept darting between both of us for a moment before he finally asked; "But I thought... I thought that she was killed by the Alphas and that her sister had been the one to cry wolf?!"

"No."

"And then the case had been settled and closed because of the then Alpha’s influence... and the girl... the one who had testified against them had been branded an enemy of the pack?"

"You mean her sister?"

At the mention of the word ’sister,’ my blood boiled.

Against my will, I vaguely remembered the role Leilani had played in causing my chaos. She was the reason I was like this... the reason I’d lost everything in the first place.

"Yes." The guard snapped, pulling me out of my reverie.

My frown returned to my face and I ground my teeth together when slowly, my fear began to morph into something else... anger.

I opened my mouth to speak but was soon beaten to it when Jon snapped; "Leilani is the innocent one. This one here, she’s the real shedevil. She’s the mastermind behind almost everything that’s happened."

I recoiled at the insult. But do you know what I found more insulting? The fact that these men were choosing Leilani over me. The fact that they had the guts to compare her to me. The fact that...

"She has hair now and you do not. She doesn’t have bald spots either." Jon snapped and it wasn’t until then that I realized that he was talking to me.

My eyes widened as I looked up at him and to my utter embarrassment, I realized that I had said that out loud. And that he’d responded by making a mockery of my current situation.

I cringed.

"She also didn’t kill my sister and then made her twin suffer for trying to seek justice." He added and a shiver ran down my spine as soon as he said that. My face also colored a bright shade of red.

But could I respond?

Hell no.

Could I even speak?

Of course not.

I simply lowered my head in shame, not bothering to hold back the tears streaming down my face as I whispered; "I really don’t know anything about what you’re talking about."

"I got Louis to confess." He said suddenly, causing me to freeze in shock, "...And Pius. Luke is suffering his karma right now. And I swear I can help you... I can really help you out of this situation if you’ll tell the truth."

As soon as he said that, my head snapped upward. I blinked at him and shook my head violently. And even though I wanted to stand my ground, to remain with my opinion and insist that I had nothing to do with her death, I couldn’t bring myself to say the words.

I cried. "You’ll help me? How?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

"I just want to know what went down that night. They’ve said their sides of the story but I need to hear from you as I trust you more than I trust them. You’re also not directly involved since you had only taken her there and I believe that you didn’t rape her or something. So..."

"I took her there." I rushed out, hating the way the words tasted like bile on my tongue. I also ignored the way he turned to look at me with wide eyes, and squeezing my eyes shut, I continued;

"She was pretty close to the triplet Alphas and to Leilani, and I feared that she would try to make them all friends."

"So you tried to hurt her?" He asked coldly. And call me stupid but I know that I should’ve stopped there. That I should’ve stopped talking as soon as his eyes hardened.

But I didn’t.

I explained; "I tried to warn her to stay away from all of them."

"And she refused?" He asked and I could only nod"So you took her there?"

Again, I nodded, infuriating him. He snapped; "Use your words!"

"Yes!" I cried, shaking all over.

"And then you also caused the fire today, didn’t you?"

"Yes!"

It wasn’t until I said that that I realized my error. That I realized he’d asked me about the fire too, taking advantage of the fact that I was still shaken by the whole situation.

Silence. It settled between us for a moment before he finally shrugged. His voice was tight as he said; "Good, thank you."

"For what?"

"For giving me proof. None of what I said earlier is true. Louis escaped. The rest are far in another country and you... you are my only scapegoat. I’ve been recording."

For a moment, I simply watched him in contempt, his voice sounding like gibberish to my ears... before it finally began to make sense.

My heart broke.

"You—!"
