Chapter 139: Chapter 139 Committed a Taboo

Three days before the wedding, the company’s mid-to-upper management had a routine meeting.

After the meeting ended, Cheng Xiangheng looked at Cheng Qiaobei, who was surrounded by a crowd, and his gaze grew deeper.

"Have Manager Cheng come to my office," he said before turning away and leaving.

Deng Yan glanced at Cheng Qiaobei, who was being praised like a star, and only approached him after the crowd dispersed, saying,

"Mr. Cheng would like you to go to his office."

As Cheng Qiaobei walked, he asked, "What does Mr. Cheng want with me?"

Deng Yan checked his surroundings and, seeing no one around, lowered his voice,

"It should be related to your transfer."

Cheng Qiaobei turned his gaze, "Transfer? Did he mention where I’m going?"

"No," Deng Yan recalled the scene earlier and kindly advised, "Manager Cheng, there’s something I’m not sure if I should say."

Being astute, Deng Yan wouldn’t blurt out useless things.

"Go ahead."

Deng Yan said, "Your current spotlight is too vivid, it might be best to avoid some sharpness."

Cheng Qiaobei withdrew his gaze, thoughtfully, and asked, "Have Mr. Cheng and Chairman Zheng been meeting frequently lately?"

Deng Yan replied, "Chairman Zheng hasn’t really. Siluo is about to give birth, so her mind is on that."

"Has Chairman Xu been visiting often?"

"In recent days, Mr. Cheng has been calling Chairman Xu over for tea, and they spend hours together. What they discuss is kept from me, so I’m not sure."

"..."

Even Deng Yan was kept in the dark, suggesting it wasn’t just about having tea.

Cheng Qiaobei nodded, "Alright."

Approaching Cheng Xiangheng’s office, he raised his hand to knock, and a voice responded through the door.

"Come in."

Cheng Qiaobei pushed the door open and entered. The person behind the desk was engrossed in the file he held. "Mr. Cheng," he called softly, receiving no response in return. Cheng Qiaobei withdrew his hand from the chair and stood straight there.

Cheng Xiangheng patiently flipped through the file. Cheng Qiaobei knew well that he was being ignored to temper his arrogance and remind him who was the center of this company. Cheng Xiangheng had a strong desire for control in matters concerning the company, not tolerating anyone defying him, nor allowing anyone to threaten his position.

He looked at Cheng Qiaobei, his gaze indifferent, "You’ve handled several things well recently, and everyone seems quite approving of you."

Cheng Qiaobei was about to explain, but stopped himself, knowing it was foolish to argue at this point.

Cheng Xiangheng continued, "You are indeed smart. Regardless of whether things can be achieved, you are willing to accept challenges, and lucky for you, you have won several impressive victories for the company. Because of this fearless spirit, you’ve inspired many within the group who share your ideas, and in the future, you all will carve out a new world."

Cheng Qiaobei’s heart trembled. Suspecting that he harbored ambitions to usurp power, he understood this was a major taboo.

"Mr. Cheng, you are the compass of the group. We are just the small boats following behind you. If the ship sails the vast sea without the guidance of the compass, disasters will ensue. As for me, it’s only because of your support behind me; otherwise, who would care about a small manager like me?"

Indeed wise, a single sentence hit the mark.

But even with Cheng Qiaobei’s stance made clear, distrust had already taken root in Cheng Xiangheng’s heart, and it wouldn’t easily disappear.

Cheng Xiangheng laughed, "A small manager? It seems I have underestimated you."

"!" Cheng Qiaobei’s pupils constricted, calming himself before he said nonchalantly, "With my qualifications, being able to hold the position of regional manager at Jade Jiali is already a promotion from you, for which I am genuinely grateful."

"Is that so?" Cheng Xiangheng raised an eyebrow, scrutinizing him, "Considering the revenue you’ve generated for the hotel, a regional manager is a bit underutilized. Didn’t you feel I’ve been unfair to you? Lacking in talent appreciation?"

Cheng Qiaobei replied with determined eyes, "Of course not."

"Heh," Cheng Xiangheng smiled kindly, "Don’t be nervous. If someone walked in now, they might think I’m suppressing a star employee."

Cheng Qiaobei remained calm, "How could that be? Everyone knows Mr. Cheng’s character, you’re just overthinking."

The last sentence had a double meaning.

Cheng Xiangheng paused, then said, "There’s something I might need to tell you in advance, though it was planned to be announced at the wedding."

Cheng Qiaobei frowned, puzzled.

Cheng Xiangheng continued, "The company will appoint you as the general manager of the group, fully responsible for the hotel’s operations and strategic management."

Cheng Qiaobei swallowed slowly, "Mr. Cheng overestimates me. I don’t yet have the ability to take on that role." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

"Don’t be modest," Cheng Xiangheng insisted, "It’s settled then; I’ll have Secretary Deng issue the appointment letter shortly."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "I..."

"Alright, if there’s nothing else, you can go. I have an important call to return," Cheng Xiangheng dismissed him without giving him a chance to speak, gesturing for him to leave casually, "By the way, give the wedding time and place to Secretary Deng, remind him to not let me be late."

Cheng Qiaobei stared at Cheng Xiangheng, his clenched fists seeming as if they were about to crush everything. His chest heaved violently, and the suppressed anger in his heart was beyond control.

The surrounding atmosphere instantly became oppressive and chilling.

Cheng Xiangheng’s expression was indifferent as he said with an arrogant demeanor, "Don’t want me to attend?"

Cheng Qiaobei’s eyes focused, taking a deep breath, forcing himself to erase his anger. He was forced to accept the appointment, "I won’t disturb your work any longer. I’m leaving."

From the moment he left the office, standing across from him the entire time, it was evident Cheng Xiangheng had placed him on the opposing side.

Previously, he thought it was because of Ding Yuan that Cheng Xiangheng wouldn’t draw close to him, but now he finally understood why Ding Yuan resolutely chose to stay away.

He didn’t love anyone else, only himself, and loved his career, with no one able to shake his profession.

Cheng Qiaobei carried an invitation card in his pocket, which now seemed entirely unnecessary. Tearing a page from Deng Yan’s desk, he wrote the wedding’s time and place, sticking it to the computer screen, "Mr. Cheng asked you to remind him not to be late."

Deng Yan looked at the date written on it, immediately understanding.

Standing up, he said, "Manager Cheng, don’t worry, I’ll ensure Mr. Cheng arrives early."

Cheng Qiaobei responded, "Thank you."

He left the company. On the way back, reflecting in the car’s rearview mirror was his somber, cold face, seemingly engulfed by endless darkness, which sent chills down the spine.

Cheng Qiaobei turned to Lin Hanrui’s company. As soon as the car stopped, he saw a familiar figure entering the building.

Before reaching the entrance, he heard Liang Lei’s clear and cheerful laughter.

Cheng Qiaobei stood outside, complex emotions flitting across his face as he watched Lin Hanrui gripping Liang Lei’s hand, similar to devouring chicken claws.

He frowned disdainfully, "In public, you both should watch your influence."

As soon as Lin Hanrui saw Cheng Qiaobei, he released his hand, "What are you doing here?"

Cheng Qiaobei strode in, sitting down on the sofa. "Did I come at a bad time?"

"You," Lin Hanrui started, noticing his off-color, then smiling, "How could it be? It’s perfect timing, let’s have dinner together tonight."

Cheng Qiaobei checked his watch, "My wife is about to finish work as well."

Lin Hanrui instantly understood, "Have Ning Xi join us too."
