Chapter 317: An Act (2)

"Sidney. Do you think she will fall into the trap?"

The voice came from the shadows behind the desk. The man himself remained unseen, the light positioned carefully so that only his hands were visible, folded together as if in thought.

Despite not being able to see the man, Sidney was not bothered. Instead, he answered calmly, "Yes. She will."

"You sound very sure."

"I am." Sidney straightened slightly, "I’ve already told you that she will."

A faint chuckle drifted through the room. "Confidence is good. But recklessness is not." The man leaned back, chair creaking softly. "I don’t understand why you insist on taking this path when we have simpler options. Faster ones."

Sidney’s jaw tightened.

"We’ve already gathered enough information," the man continued calmly. "Her preferences. Her patterns. Her visits to places she shouldn’t be frequenting." A pause. "She likes control."

Sidney said nothing.

"She seeks it," the voice pressed on. "Craves it. Especially over men who appear strong." A faint tap of fingers against wood. "The only reason for choosing you was your shared... hidstory. But, if you don’t wish to play that role, we can find someone who will. Someone who understands how to submit. Someone who can give her exactly what she wants."

"I don’t believe she’s a dominant."

The words came out sharper than he intended. Sidney caught himself too late and snapped his mouth shut. But the man had already caught on," Interesting."

Sidney clenched his hands at his sides. "I just said, I don’t believe she is a dominant."

"Maybe she wasn’t," the voice conceded. "But people change. Trauma reshapes desire. Loss distorts it. And right now, everything about her points in one direction."

Sidney shook his head. "Something is not adding up. You are underestimating her. I don;t think she is so simple."

"Am I really underestimating her?" The man leaned forward slightly, though his face remained hidden. "Her choices. Her movements. Her behaviour. They all align. She likes control. Over men. Over situations. Over outcomes. She is quite predictable."

"That doesn’t make her predictable. And I don’t think you are in the right spot to judge. After all, if it had not been for your questionable choice in choosing your fiance, you would not have been caught in this predicament, right? Do you know what I think? She is quite exploitable. Like you."

Sidney’s breath hitched at the direct jab but he controlled himself and said more quietly, "There are other ways. Cleaner ways to make her more compliant."

"There always are," the man replied. "But they don’t always work. And we don’t have the luxury of trial and error."

Sidney looked up sharply. "You said we had time."

"I said we had some." The voice hardened, just a fraction. "Not enough to indulge your conscience."

Sidney’s fists clenched again. "You want her willing. But only on your terms."

"I don’t care about her willingness? We want results. Your way relies on trust. On patience. On her choosing to step closer instead of being pushed."

"That’s exactly why it will work," Sidney shot back. "If she feels cornered, she’ll bolt. If she feels manipulated she might not be willing..."

"She is being manipulated. Let’s not pretend otherwise. As for her willingness, that is not needed."

Sidney exhaled slowly through his nose. "That’s exactly the problem. If she believes she’s being forced, then she will act like a victim."

The man behind the desk did not respond at once.

"And victims," Sidney continued, "always find a way to escape. They gather sympathy. They create noise. They look for protection." His gaze hardened. "You underestimate how dangerous that can be."

A finger tapped once against the desk.

"If she is pushed," Sidney went on, "if she is cornered or coerced, then the moment something goes wrong-and we both know it will, eventually-she might claim she had no choice. She could cry manipulation. Threats. Abuse." His jaw tightened. "And people will listen."

The man shifted slightly in his chair.

"But if she walks into this willingly, in fact takes the lead" Sidney said, leaning forward now, his tone sharp, "then she owns it. Every step. Every decision. There is no escape route built on innocence."

Silence stretched between them.

"She won’t be able to say she was dragged in," Sidney added. "She won’t be able to pretend she didn’t understand the risks. And most importantly—" He paused deliberately. "—she won’t be able to run back to Hunt when things turn ugly."

That got the man’s attention. "You think this gives you leverage over him?" the voice asked.

Sidney nodded once. "Yes. Her willingness will make it easier...More than force ever could.Aiden is careful. He would react violently and ruthlessly to threats, but he is predictable when it comes to his sister being a victim. If she appears harmed, cornered, or exploited, he will tear everything apart to get her out."

"And if she isn’t?"

"If she is willing," Sidney said calmly, "then his hands are tied. He can’t save someone who chose this path herself. Any move he makes then looks like control. Interference. Abuse of power. And we’ve already checked. He still seems to care for her, even if he has exiled her to this place. So, that is how you get a real handle on him. Not by threatening her. By making her a participant."

A low hum of thought filled the room.

"It’s cleaner," Sidney said. "If this ever explodes—and you and I both know it might—she won’t be seen as collateral damage. She’ll be seen as complicit."

The man was quiet for a long moment.

"And if she resists?" he finally asked.

Sidney’s eyes darkened. "She won’t. Not if she believes this gives her power. Independence. A way out from under her brother’s shadow."

A faint smile tugged at his lips. "She wants control. Just not in the way you think."

Another pause.

Then, at last, the man sighed. "You’re taking a risk."

"Yes," Sidney agreed. "But it’s a calculated one."

The man sighed. "Then take a risk both ways. Seek her compliance but also prepare material to blackmail her. We don’t have to use it. But we should have it. Am I clear?"
