Fairy, Don't Be Afraid, I Am Blind-Chapter 39 - 33: Golden Eyes That Break Evil
The wind is gentle and the sun is warm, yet in front of the City Lord’s mansion, there is a deathly silence. Even the sparrows seem unable to endure the oppressive atmosphere, flying away in flocks.
As the name Gu Yao was mentioned, some were puzzled, some terrified, and others incredulous, while You Su became the focus of all eyes.
"Immortal Master Gu, why say such things?" You Su asked calmly.
Gu Yao did not answer, instead glaring at the young man with a gaze filled with aggression.
Seeing the situation, Mr. Liou hurriedly smooths his sleeves and steps between the two, saying,
"It seems Mr. Gu may have misunderstood... This child is gentle and well-behaved, raised in Chuyun City and hasn’t even left its gates much. How could he be tainted by demons? Perhaps Mr. Gu... you should verify once more?"
At these words, the golden light in Gu Yao’s eyes dissipated, and he cast a sidelong glance at the troubled expression of Mr. Liou with a sharp and disdainful look.
"Do you not believe me, or do you not believe the Golden Eye?"
Mr. Liou gritted his teeth, took a step forward, and bowed his head respectfully:
"Please, Mr. Gu, try once more."
Gu Yao gave a cold humph, thinking that this fellow sect brother left the sect too long and forgot those evil cultivators in the Divine Mountain Celestial Prison who wanted to live or die after the Golden Eye fell upon them.
He felt pity for this old yet defiant brother, knowing well that if someone in his jurisdiction is possessed by evil, the City Lord bears the greatest responsibility. If the young man was truly possessed, dreaming of breaking the realm by relying on the Profound Sky Sect’s earnings would be sheer folly.
Smoothing his sleeves as if to dispel Mr. Liou’s hopes, he said indifferently,
"Earlier I asked you to come forward one by one because the third task I have here is to see if any of you have lost your mind and become minions of the Evil God!"
"My Golden Eye can stir the hidden wrath, desires, and evil thoughts in one’s heart. Even the most upright hero would feel awkward and uneasy when meeting its gaze. For anyone yet to become a True Immortal, anger and longing reside within; it’s human nature. Regular cultivators could still hold onto their integrity unless their evil thoughts are too deep or they lack self-control. If tainted by evil, such evil thoughts would be magnified, appearing as uncontrollable flames when meeting the Golden Eye, revealing their true nature in broad daylight."
Upon hearing this, the cultivators realized why their evil thoughts had arisen rapidly while meeting Gu Yao’s gaze before, and they dared not look him in the eye again, each feeling fortunate that Mr. Liou had managed Chuyun City well, keeping it safe without evil intrusion, saving them from disgrace.
"The Golden Eye is powerful, but there are two kinds of people who can face me without reaction."
Everyone returned to their senses, entirely drawn by Gu Yao’s words.
"The first kind, those whose hearts are innately as clear as a mirror, pure and untainted. These are seeds sown by the Heavenly Dao, earthly reflections of the divine, not producing any evil that even the deepest darkness cannot contaminate. Such people have been rare over the past ten thousand years; yet in this era, my Profound Sky Sect has such a Divine Maiden!"
Gu Yao spoke proudly, and the attending cultivators were astonished, unable to believe they lived in the same era as such a legendary figure. They began whispering and speculating about everything related to this Divine Maiden.
"Mr. Liou, are you perhaps trying to tell me there’s another hidden gem in Central Yuan, tucked away in this Chuyun City?"
"This..." Mr. Liou was speechless, staring at You Su before silently shaking his head.
"If it is not a hidden gem..." Gu Yao sneered, walking slowly to You Su’s side.
He slightly lowered his head, his face just a fist away from You Su’s, staring directly into You Su’s eyes, his tone cold and dangerous: "That can only mean that within this person lies an evil so profound that even I cannot discern it!" 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
Upon these words, everyone felt their hearts drop; some found it hard to believe while staring at the slender figure of the youth.
Only Mr. Liou bowed his head, hiding a slight upward curve of his lips.
During this needle-down tense moment, You Su suddenly chuckled lightly, his laughter clear as the wind while those listening felt it was chillingly sharp, assuming he had hidden deeply and now feigned composure once exposed.
Gu Yao also laughed, with cold confidence.
"Why is Immortal Master Gu laughing?" You Su asked, with a smile.
"Of course, I’m amused that you chose to hide even within a nameless person’s body, yet still cannot escape being eradicably doomed."
"I do not laugh at that," You Su replied, retracting his smile and speaking calmly, "What amuses me is that someone as renowned as Immortal Master Gu could be deceived inadvertently by me."
Gu Yao raised his thick eyebrows, standing fully upright, seemingly waiting for the youth to continue.
"I think there’s a third kind of person who can meet Immortal Master’s gaze without any reaction."
"Who?"
"The blind." You Su couldn’t help but laugh again, "As Immortal Master mentioned earlier, the key to the Golden Eye’s effect is direct gaze, yet I am congenitally blind, my eyes never having seen light, even in places where the sun cannot reach. The golden light within your eyes hence would be ineffective."
"Blind, are you?"
Gu Yao, filled with suspicion, carefully examined the youth’s seemingly clear eyes. Being aware of his gaze, You Su no longer moved, allowing Gu Yao to observe.
After a long time, Gu Yao finally confirmed You Su’s gaze was indeed vacant, unfocused, like two deep pools unable to converge.
Gu Yao knew well the Golden Eye had no effect on the blind. However, even in Zhongyuan Continent’s largest Profound Sky Sect, there wasn’t a single blind cultivator. Through habitual thinking, he saw a young and handsome Spirit Platform Realm youth acting no different from ordinary people and naturally couldn’t imagine he was blind.
It’s known the eyes are the gateway to the soul, and the inability to see creates far greater obstacles in cultivation than any other physical defect.
To have reached such a realm at such a young age, the youth likely endured countless hardships.
Gu Yao could only marvel internally, feeling no embarrassment about being deceived in public. He was like that, delighted to see those diligently pursuing the Dao but indignant at those who idly waste their talent.
His indifference toward Mr. Liou came not from arrogance but from discovering years ago that Mr. Liou feigned diligence while secretly indulging in excessive drinking, gambling, and pleasures, deceiving fellow sect members who befriended him, gifting him many Spirit Pills and treasures. Gu Yao openly challenged this and was instead isolated until Mr. Liou, unable to break through his limits, had to leave the sect and begged the master for a small city lord position to cling to the Profound Sky Sect’s earnings. Gu Yao detested such individuals, feeling they tarnished the resolute pursuit of the Dao held by cultivators worldwide.
However, Gu Yao was not a fool obsessed with righteousness; understanding today’s events made him realize someone deliberately aimed to embarrass him.
He glanced at the straightforward youth and another glance at the bowed-head Mr. Liou, realizing everything.
Blindness was the key label for this youth, yet despite Mr. Liou’s seemingly righteous introduction earlier, he deliberately omitted this vital fact, simply wanting to see me flounder and appear cowardly before the crowd.
Gu Yao shook his head, lamenting his once-belief that sixty years of worldly experience would harden Mr. Liou’s pursuit of the Dao, only to find he remained an irritable, scheming rat.
