Chapter 239: Commodus

"T-THRONE ROOM!!"

A sudden shriek echoed through the white ribbon, splitting everyone’s attention.

An unfortunate handful of Damnedlings were distracted by the voice, cursing at its owner for bringing doom upon them.

Their furious thoughts naturally didn’t last for long. They perished the next second.

At the same time, the golden tip of a black blade plunged deep into the chest of a tall wraith.

[You have slain an (Elite) [Underworld] Swordspawn [3] levels lower than you! Calculating experience point rewards...]

[You’ve obtained 27,350 Experience Points!]

[You’ve obtained (2) Demon Essence.]

Daru quickly jumped back.

He was about to clarify the situation, but Caleb beat him to it:

"What do you mean throne room?! Where?!"

It wasn’t the most graceful and composed way of asking a question, especially for a commander, but it had urgency, at least.

"I see a huge door on the fourth floor! It has the insignia of a black crown on it! I think...I think it’s the throne room!"

Caleb’s heart skipped a beat.

A wave of excitement washed over him, but at the same time, fear.

The fear of hoping, only for that hope to be ruthlessly extinguished by something as shallow and silly as a mistake.

There was a door with a crown insignia, sure, but how could they be certain that it was the throne room?

And yet, Caleb hoped. He hoped that their suffering would come to an end soon.

His entire being was heavy as lead, and he wanted to be given a chance to recover from the heartbreak of losing comrades due to his ineptness as a commander and his mental and physical exhaustion.

"Onimaru! Sigrun! Once yo–"

Before Caleb could finish his words, however, two enthusiastic responses came through.

"On it."

"This princess knows what to do."

Then, a gold and silver blur vanished into the pitiful tide of struggling wretches.

It was unknown whether they understood the urgency of the situation or were simply excited to face a mighty opponent.

The human Visitor duo was way too enthusiastic in dealing with the herculean task assigned to them, for sure.

A dozen seconds later, the two made it to the back of the formation.

It wasn’t too difficult to locate the said double door.

After all, the recovering wretches were all looking at it, both fear and hope glimmering in the depths of their abyssal eyes.

The end of their suffering was right there, just inside.

Daru and Elara wasted no time, ascending the remaining steps in less than two seconds and kicking the massive door open.

The last few things they heard as they entered were Caleb’s order to swap the rear army with the now-battered frontliners.

Then, the door closed, and with it came the silence of the voices in the white ribbon.

Communication was cut.

Daru wasn’t one to split his attention too much, though, so he focused on what was in front of him instead.

A vast stone hall.

It wasn’t exactly grand or majestic, but it was very spacious. So much so that he could barely make out what was at the end.

A stone throne — cold and unfeeling, like the ruler that sat on it.

After all, the ruler was but a mere dried-up corpse.

The Crown...The Crown was still on its head, but the owner itself seemed to have been dead for eons.

But there was another.

Aside from the fallen ruler and his black crown, there was a wraith of average height, just an inch or two taller than Daru.

It wore a princely coronet, donned an intricate armor crafted from black stone, and wielded two black stone gladiuses.

A thick black aura oozed from the pallid pores of its pale-white skin, partially veiling its chilling figure like spilled ink crawling through water.

It wasn’t too difficult to tell that the bastard was mightier than Rocante.

To make things worse, this special wraith’s abilities didn’t seem to be reliant on small boons like the hulking horror’s.

Soon, the regal abomination noticed them.

It leisurely turned and tilted its head. Then, it began walking closer, in no hurry at all.

The human Visitor duo’s eyes narrowed slightly, then widened for a moment as the abomination’s nameplate came into view:

==

Commodus

HP: 6,530 / 6,530

==

It was very strange, to say the least.

Why was there no level beside the wraith’s name — written in ink-black text? Also, why were his hitpoints so...low?

It almost seemed like Commodus was a bladeborn.

But how could the abomination be one when he’s clearly a prince of the Stone Castle?

Unfortunately, they were soon denied the luxury of pondering the matter.

Commodus turned into a black blur.

The princely wraith’s dual gladiuses moved as one, slashing diagonally at Daru from the right.

Daru’s eyes widened.

He quickly raised his sword to block, but the defense he mustered was a clumsy one.

An ear-piercing clang rang out as the black stone gladiuses bit into Onimaru Kunitsuna.

Due to the nature of the clash, the latter lost, and its wielder was sent skidding back a few meters.

Daru was confused on multiple levels.

The princely wraith was strong, sure, but even the depressed Rocante had been far stronger — at least in terms of sheer strength.

So...how could Commodus have sent the hulking horror crashing out of the castle walls?

This, however, is a mystery for later.

He had to defeat the princely wraith first.

Curiously, Commodus isn’t too relentless, watching him stabilize first. Daru hadn’t noticed, but a black sword mark had appeared above him.

At the same time it appeared, his comrade, Elara, unleashed her strike. She attacked from the side, turning into a white tornado that viciously pierced towards the malicious prince. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Or at least should’ve...

Commodus didn’t even make an effort to defend against her Sword Skill.

It simply didn’t work.

Elara’s eyes widened in utter disbelief, slightly bewildered that her flyssa’s tip did not even pierce the enemy’s skin.

In the next moment, the malicious prince ruthlessly brandished his twin gladiuses...passing Sigrun’s neck like a hot knife through butter.
