Extra's Revenge: Reincarnated As A Slave-Chapter 56: Seeing Through The Culprit (Part 2)
"So... what will you do now?"
As the silhouette’s distorted words echoed within the darkness, Rey kept his eyes closed.
He felt a strange sensation.
A hint of excitement, but also disappointment.
Not at the mastermind.
But at himself.
’Why didn’t I see it earlier? Was I so focused on my own plans and the bigger picture that I failed to take the necessary precautions?’ He asked himself these questions, but also knew he was being a little too unfair.
He couldn’t have known.
Not without being exposed to this conversation that confirmed everything.
’This person refers to Lord Dreyfus as Family Head, which makes the chances high that he serves in the Desgarron Family. Even then, he speaks with such irreverence when addressing the family, showing a lack of regard for it.’
It made Rey ponder.
’Even High Nobles have a certain respect for the Noble Households. Alistair still respected the Desgarron Family, even though he looked down on Augustus. This has to do with the etiquette taught in the Academy and a Pride of Nobility. This is something that the culprit lacks or doesn’t care about. They are likely not a Noble, nor are they affiliated with other Nobles...’ These were other things that went on in Rey’s mind.
He coupled a few other clues, like his assurance that Rey knew of ’stacking’. He must have been aware that Rey learned it from his match against Bad Boy, thus connecting him to the Coliseum.
’For him to even use stacking, he must have a proper understanding of the Technique he wishes to stack with. That means he knows details of the Slave Contract itself...’
At this point, Rey was already certain that this person had access to Augustus’ records and his actions, which naturally included the slave contract.
However, this came as no surprise.
After all, Rey already figured out that the culprit had to have some influence and authority in the Desgarron Manor.
How else would he know so much information?
He would know exactly what place Rey was locked in and how to get there. He would be aware that Lord Dreyfus’ spoke about Rey’s gap in memories. He would even understand the Family Head’s personality to the point that he knew the man wouldn’t act spontaneously and kill Rey on the spot—with or without the gap in memories.
Wasn’t that why he had the window of opportunity to visit Rey and offer this deal?
Thus, the culprit had to have existed in the Desgarron Manor for an extended period, gaining the trust and freedom to get away with all of these things and also understand the people within it.
So many other clues existed, but the most important one had to be the poisoning itself.
How did it happen?
Rey was tempted to ask the culprit, but he felt there was really no need to.
It didn’t matter, and he had a good guess.
’It is as Lord Dreyfus said. The poisoning could have happened at any time, and it was only just activated. This coincides with the identity of this person who has definitely been here for the time necessary to pull this off.’
Rey was astute.
He had lived an eventful life in the past and had insights that normal people wouldn’t have.
Thus, he was able to gather all of these separate clues, and after piecing them all together... he found his answer.
"I accept."
Rey finally let out a sigh and responded.
"Good. Let us begin." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
The culprit wasted no time and brought out a slave contract from seemingly thin air.
"You don’t need blood. Just saliva."
Rey nodded, obeying immediately. He spat on the parchment in front of him, and the object began to react.
Rey could tell this slave contract was even higher in quality compared to what Augustus used on him.
It showed this person’s level of precaution.
But it was all useless.
’It’s too late...’ Rey felt a sense of satisfaction in his heart despite being bound yet again.
That was because he didn’t feel powerless this time around. In fact, he felt like it was the opposite.
Because of their arrangement, and all the thought that went into this plot, Rey became certain that the culprit needed him.
Thus, it was they who were bound to him.
’I don’t have anything to lose now.’
This was the obvious choice.
********
Days later, Rey was released.
Everything went according to what the culprit had said, and he was cleared of all suspicions.
The scapegoat used in his stead had committed suicide after being apprehended, and after searching his room and corpse, rhey found irrefutable evidence that directly tied him into poisoning Amara and also mind controlling Rey.
Amara was still unconscious, and she had even been taken out of the Manor by the time Rey was released.
Rey desired to see her or ask for her wellbeing, but due to his slave status, he knew it would be pushing his luck, so he decided not to even make the attempt.
It was also because he was a mere slave that no apology was given to him.
He was simply returned to his quarters.
Even Augustus didn’t come to see him, as he was likely ashamed to face his slave after failing to stand up for him yet again.
’What a pathetic master...’ Rey smiled.
There was one person who came to visit, likely as a representative of the noe reclusive Augustus.
But Rey was also expecting this individual for another reason.
"How are you feeling?"
The man entered Rey’s room after knocking.
He had a polite disposition, which was why, despite having access to his room, he still chose to knock.
He had an aged face, with purple eyes and a mustache which he liked to twirl occasionally.
"S-Sir Logan? Why are you here? I am fine..." Rey pretended to be surprised, his performance very convincing.
"The Young Master placed you in my care, so isn’t this natural. Although you and I serve the same Master and you may consider me as no more than a teacher, I do in fact worry for you at times."
Rey felt very impressed.
He thought his acting was good, but this person’s performance was on another level.
Absolutely masterful.
’I have to learn a few things from him...’
"Thank you for your kindness, Sir Logan. I... actually feel a little shaken. I was so close to death this time. For real."
"It’s natural to feel rattled after what you went through. I’ve served in this place even before the Young Master was born, and I have not gotten used to the Family Head’s pressure. It’s different from what you usually face in the Coliseum, right?"
Rey nodded.
"Like night and day."
Logan sat right next to Rey in the room and placed his hand on his shoulder.
"You can tell me all about it..." A warm smile was on his face; the kind that would fool a sixteen year old slave.
But how could that have an effect on Rey?
In fact, it was the opposite.
The longer they spoke, the more all his suspicions regarding this moustached man became too obvious to ignore.
This interaction was the final confirmation he needed to fully embrace his realization.
’Logan... It’s you.’
[A/N: I am certain most of you already figured it out much earlier, but I found it interesting showing how Rey deduced the answer. This isn’t really a plot twist, but I still like the reveal.]
