It was as if the world slowed to a crawl.

The rain fell in slow motion, moving away as it was being blown by the gust of wind.

"Noooooo!" Lilith’s scream pierced through the air, sending everyone in the vicinity in a panic.

Her eyes were wide in horror as she stared at the blade sticking out of Ren’s chest. In that moment, she felt like her life was being ripped out of her. As if it wasn’t Ren’s heart that had been stabbed but hers.

The knife was yanked out and as Ren slumped to the floor, she shot forward and caught him in her hands.

Her eyes snapped to his soul, a spherical blob of ethereal energy as it tried to leave his body and her hand snapped out, snatching it before it could dissipate.

The world around her faded into nothingness. All that was left was her, Ren and his soul.

"No. No. No. No. No." She repeated under her breath, choking as sobs wracked her body. Tears fell, mingling with the rain.

Lilith had never felt so desperate in her life before. Her hands shook as she stretched out Ren’s soul, trying to push it back into his body. The soul slipped off like water trying to stick to an oiled surface.

"No. Ren! Don’t leave me." She cried, grabbing the soul with both hands. She knelt before Ren’s body, uncaring of the wet ground, water flowing around them.

"No!" She sobbed as his soul tried to fragment. All her life, she’d always hated her Gift. But the one time she really needed it, it was failing her.

Gritting her teeth, she spread out his soul from a blob, fashioning it in his shape. She overlaid it over his body, a blob for a head and four stretched out parts for each limb.

If the soul wasn’t going to enter back into his body, she’d have to stitch it on.

She fashioned a thin translucent blue thread with her Soul Dominion, guiding it as it weaved through Ren’s soul. She worked as fast as she could, her hands holding his soul in place as she stitched it to the frayed places where the body and soul intersected.

She worked, uncaring for what was going on around her. She worked until the last stitch was in place, and Ren’s soul settled over his body like a blanket. She stared down at him, praying, hoping that it would be enough.

Then, a voice shattered her focus, bringing her back to reality.

"Heh." The deep voice chuckled. "It was fun watching you fret, kid. But your man is gone. Now, it’s your turn to be butchered."

Lilith’s eyes snapped to him and she was immediately consumed in a fiery rage.

The shadowy man didn’t have time to react before Lilith was in front of him, seized him by the head and slammed him into the ground.

The crowd that had gathered to watch what was happening screamed, and some began to run away.

That didn’t matter to Lilith. She grabbed the man’s arm and tore it off his shoulder.

The man’s scream filled the air but was quickly silenced as Lilith stretched her hand upwards, materialized a giant ball of soul energy in her hand and slammed it down.

Whoomph!

There was a whoosh of air and the world around them rumbled. The ground cracked, houses fell in destruction and the street was levelled into rubble.

"Aaaaarrrggghhhh!!!!" Lilith didn’t stop there. She began raining blows on the man, whaling on him without stopping.

She didn’t care if the man was long dead. She didn’t care if she was beating the ground into a crater. All she cared about was inflicting damage on the body below her.

She screamed into the rain, tears falling down her face.

It was unfair! No matter how much she hit him, it would never make up for the pain he had caused. For the fact that Ren was dead!

She didn’t know how long she spent punching what was now a paste of meat into the ground but she was pulled out of her pain-filled trance by a shout of her name.

"Lilith!" Elias called out. "That’s enough! Ren is fine!"

She froze. Ren… is fine?!

Her eyes widened and her head snapped up. Elias was standing four feet above her, at the edge of the crater. On his face was an expression of worry, the rain plastering his hair on his forehead.

"He’s fine, Lilith. Everything’s going to be okay." He said in a soothing voice but Lilith was barely listening.

She hopped out of the crater and an instant later, was in front of Ren, who was in Thorn’s hands. She took the body from Thorn, feeling for a heartbeat.

There was none.

Her heart tore for a second time. The wound in his heart was still there but his body was cold to the touch. Is he…

"You saved him." Thorn whispered. "Thank you, Lilith. Whatever you did, you saved him."

Lilith stared at him in confusion. What was he talking about? She wanted to believe him. She needed to believe him… but her eyes were telling a different story.

"His Bloodbinding." Thorn said, recognizing the confusion in Lilith’s eyes. "His imbued objects are still active." He whispered, a big watery smile on his face. "He’s still alive!"

Lilith’s eyes widened and she looked down at his shoes. At the bracers in his hands. At the coin he’d given her that was always on her person.

She could see traces of his soul in them, bright and active like every other Knight. If he was truly dead, the energy would be gone and the objects would’ve become normal.

She sobbed in relief, cradling his head in her hands. "Thank you! Thank you!" She whispered as she leaned over him with her eyes closed, her tears falling onto his face.

That was how they spent the next minute. Lilith crying over Ren, Thorn grinning while wiping the tears on his own face and Elias watching over them all. The rain fell, not stopping in its duty.

The relative silence was broken by the sounds of boots marching towards them. They looked up as palace soldiers stormed into the clearing, weapons raised as they surrounded the four of them.

Lilith looked up as the leader of the troops stepped out with authority. "You’re under arrest, Lilith Underwood, for the crime of murder."

"What?!" Lilith snarled, rising into a crouch. She stretched her arm out, bleu, translucent soul energy covering it in the shape of claws.

"Lilith!" Elias hissed and her eyes snapped to him. "Look around."

She blinked and finally looked around, taking in what was happening around her.

Apart from the crater where the remains of the assassin was, the whole street around them had been destroyed. The houses around her had crumbled and human bodies laid around her, all of them dead.

She gasped, taking in the damage. Did I… do this?

"Do not try to resist, Lady Underwood. You have taken noble lives and must face a trial for your actions."

Lilith’s eyes snapped back to the leader of the troops and she snarled. "No! I won’t leave Ren. Never!"

"Lilith." Elias stepped forward, speaking softly like Lilith was a spooked animal. "Go with them."

"What?! No!" She snapped, staring at him like he’d grown two heads.

"Do you trust Ren?" Elias asked. They both knew the answer to that question. "Then, follow them."

Lilith gritted her teeth, glancing at Ren, who was now in Thorn’s arms.

"You’ve saved him but by doing that, you’ve put yourself in trouble. By refusing the arrest made by the authority of the palace, you’d be putting Ren in danger too." Elias explained calmly, walking closer and taking Lilith by the shoulder.

"I know you don’t want to leave him but staying will put the both of you in even more danger." He said softly. "Trust Ren. When he wakes up, and he will, he’ll find a way to get you out of the palace."

He paused. "Trust Ren."

Lilith’s gaze moved from Ren’s body to Elias’ pleading eyes and back again. Trust Ren? But I can’t… I can’t lose him again!

What if they attack him too? What if the whole kingdom comes after us? She paused. Will Ren be safer if I leave or if I stay?

She already knew the answer to her question. It was better for her to die and have Ren live than for her to live and have Ren die.

She exhaled, turning back to Elias. "Okay. I’ll go."
