"If you don't mind me asking, what is the purpose of your visit to Elnoria?" Valen asked as they sat around the fire, the full moon shining overhead. "I'm quite familiar with the walled cities of Elnoria. I'm sure I can repay your generosity by being an adequate guide."

"Repay?" Ren waved away his words. "No need for that. Your brilliant company is enough."

"Brilliant company?" Thorn snorted from where he sat beside Valen. "No offense to you but this is the first time you've spoken since noon." Thorn grinned at the man. "I quite like the quiet warrior look if I'm being honest. I might try it out myself."

"I'd pay good money to see that." Elias chuckled as he turned the rabbits roasting on the spit over the fire. That would be their dinner.

"How much are we talking about here?" Thorn smirked. "Ten gold coins?"

"In your dreams."

Ren chuckled, turning back to Valen. "You grew up in Elnoria, right?"

"Yes, I did." The man nodded solemnly.

"That's good. I guess we might need some guidance when we get there." Ren didn't really need Valen's help for directions, but anything to keep the man around. There was no way he was passing up a chance to duel one of the game champions.

"Any place in particular you want to see?" Valen asked.

"Not really." Ren chuckled. "We're just travelling to take in the sights of Elnoria."

"Speaking of taking in the sights of Elnoria, is it true?" Thorn asked. "No one is allowed to wear white cloaks in Elnoria?"

"Really?" Lilith chimed in, eyebrows raised. "But I have this beautiful fur lined white cloak I've been wanting to try. I brought it just for this trip."

"Well, don't worry." Ren put his arms around Lilith who sat beside him, and she laid her head on his shoulder. "There'll be plenty of opportunities to try the cloak outside Elnoria."

"What if the cloak no longer fits?"

"It would." Ren chuckled. "Trust me."

"So it really is true." Thorn nodded to himself.

"Not necessarily." Valen spoke up. "It is true that the common people are not allowed to wear white cloaks in Elnoria, because white cloaks are the symbol of the Chosen."

"The Chosen? I think I've heard of them."

Elias turned to Thorn incredulously. "How haven't you heard of the Chosen? The group of people strong enough to keep Albion at bay? Where have you been living? Under a rock?"

"Nah." Thorn grinned. "Just at the end of the kingdom. And I can't believe you forgot I'm an upstart peasant with delusions of grandeur. I'll have to work more to remind you at every occasion."

Elias groaned. "Please don't." He turned to Valen. "Ignore this idiot. Continue, please."

Valen stared between Elias and Thorn for a second before continuing, a slight frown on his face. "The Chosen are the divine warriors of the church. Their name comes from the fact that they have been chosen to wield the power of the Shivering Tree."

"That's the tree they worship, isn't it?" Thorn asked, a look that said he found it all weird pasted on his face.

"No. That's incorrect." Valen said, as if he was reading from a textbook. "The kingdom of Elnoria worships the Creator. And the Shivering Tree is the only way through which the Creator speaks to humans. And so, the Synod are responsible for reading and interpreting the tremors of the Shivering Tree."

"Woah." Thorn blinked as he muttered to himself. "Sounds crazy if you ask me."

"Just how strong are the Chosen?" Elias asked.

"They're weak." Ren spoke up, drawing every eye to himself. "At least, if you take them by surprise. The average Chosen isn't strong because of their Resonance magic. They're strong if they're given time to wield that magic."

Elias cut the rabbit into pieces, placing them on edible leaves and passed them around. Ren made a mental note to get some form of plates when next they entered civilization. Maybe traveling super light wasn't such a good idea.

"So, how does it work?" Thorn asked. "Resonance magic."

"It's pretty simple." Ren pulled his arm off Lilith's shoulder to eat his food. "When the pair of Chosen takes the Oath of White—"

"Oath of White?" Lilith asked, her mouth full of meat.

"Their vow of loyalty when they don the white cloak." Ren answered before continuing. "When the pair of Chosen—"

"Pair of Chosen?" Thorn interrupted.

"If anybody interrupts me again, I'll punch them in the mouth." Ren raised a fist threateningly, expression serious. Then, his face softened as he turned to smile at Lilith. "Except you, of course."

"Of course." Lilith smiled back sweetly.

"And for you," He turned to Thorn, the threatening expression coming on his face. "The Chosen are paired, a male and female, and their Resonant magic resonate on each other, making them more powerful in each other's presence."

"Imagine two tuning forks vibrating in sync, amplifying each other. That's basically what Resonance magic is like."

"What's—"

"You know what a tuning fork is, damn you!" Ren snarled at Thorn who burst into laughter.

"I see." Thorn said, trying to stiffle his chuckles.

"As I was saying, when the pair of Chosen takes the Oath of White, they also bond with something, it could be metal, or even gravity, and resonate with it. The more they resonate with it, the stronger the resonance gets, creating a loop that will eventually be strong enough to defeat anything, if the loop isn't broken."

"That doesn't sound so powerful." Thorn chuckled. "Why haven't we conquered them yet? If I remember correctly, the previous king wanted a crusade."

"Remember what I said about creating a loop?" Ren asked.

"Yes?"

"It is rumored that the Pope of the Creation church has been holding a loop for thirty years. There are also rumors of the church having high ranking Chosens or a few members of the Synod, who have been building their loop for at least ten years."

"Fuck." Thorn whispered, eyes wide. "That can't be easy, right?"

"Of course not. It requires intense concentration but to those special few, it's as easy as breathing. They can fight, defeat their opponents and still not break their loops."

"Now I see why Albion can't just barge into Elnoria." Elias nodded to himself.

"I have to say, Lord Ren," Valen stared at Ren, expression carefully blank, but Ren could see the wariness and suspicion in his eyes. "How do you know so much about the inner workings of the Creation church?"
