Chapter 244: The Dark Tetrad (2)

While Kaiser was still fighting the larger beast, two other dogs took advantage of a brief moment to attack him from behind.

’Look at these bastards...’ he thought, glancing at them from the corner of his eye as they circled without rushing like the first time.

It seemed these animals, or whatever they were, weren’t completely devoid of intelligence.

They slipped into his blind spot despite their size. More silhouettes kept pouring in behind them. The desert seemed to vomit endless creatures.

After a few more seconds of observation, taking advantage of the moment Kaiser was under attack, the two beasts leaped at the same time, ready to end this fight that had lasted too long.

*Fiuuuush*

But while they were still in the air, an arrow sliced through the air at a speed impossible to follow with the naked eye.

It pierced the temple of the first with a dry sound. The tip exited the other side of the skull and continued its path to lodge itself in the eye of the second.

Black, foul blood spurted out, staining the desert sand as both bodies crashed heavily to the ground.

Kaiser, who had followed the action, raised an eyebrow. If the two hadn’t been lucky enough to know how they died, he knew perfectly well.

He turned slightly to see Jasper farther away lowering his bow, already calmly nocking a new arrow.

"What? You didn’t like that I stepped in?" he simply said in his monotone voice while dodging an attack before releasing an arrow that penetrated a dog’s skull.

"Remember our mission..." he added, pulling the arrow from the dead animal’s head only to plant it into the wide-open maw of another idiot that dared to attack him.

At the same time, Kaiser seized the opening. He dodged a bite, then with a clean motion, severed the head of the larger creature. The body took two more steps before collapsing.

"I know, and by the way you should be worrying more about yourself..." Kaiser said casually while flicking his blades to shake off the blood streaming down them, observing the remains for a moment.

"Well... in the end you were just a bit uglier than the others."

Farther away, the creatures kept approaching; the commotion seemed to attract the entire pack. But on his side too, Kaiser’s allies were preparing to join the fray.

"So what if we go have some fun now too?" Nox murmured while cracking his knuckles.

Almost instantly his fingers twisted slightly, and dark claws slowly emerged as a wide smile spread across his face. The guy was simply demonic, and Julian, who was next to him, witnessed it, shaking his head with a sigh while drawing his own blade.

If they hadn’t moved until now, it was simply because the number of enemies had been ridiculous, but now that the numbers were increasing, there was room for everyone.

Jasper, for his part, had already moved away, gliding fluidly between the carcasses of the many mutts he had already eliminated. Every arrow left without hesitation and hit a vital point.

"I think..." Julian stopped mid-sentence as he was lost watching the others fight, to the point that he hadn’t even noticed Nox was no longer beside him.

After a quick scan of the desert with his eyes, he didn’t take long to spot him farther away. He had deliberately thrown himself into the thick of it. "Why would that surprise me anyway? It’s not like it’s surprising coming from that lunatic!" Julian muttered to himself.

*Raaarrrg*

While he was deep in conversation with himself, an enraged beast kept growling menacingly, drool dripping from the corner of its maw.

"Shut the fuck up, son of a bitch!" Julian shouted, annoyed. "Can’t you see I’m busy?"

He suddenly vanished from his position, reappearing directly beside the startled animal.

Slash!

With a swift motion aimed at its flank, his blade met no resistance as it sank into the beast’s flesh, which howled in pain. A thin layer of ice formed at the point of impact, preventing the blood from flowing.

"So what, you’re not opening your fucking mouth anymore, huh?" Julian roared, venting on the animal by plunging his blade several times into its battered body. "Die, bastard!"

With a fluid gesture he decapitated it; its head fell to the ground shortly after its body also collapsed onto the sand. The poor creature still had its eyes open at the moment its head was severed.

Barely finished dealing with one, three others were already there howling, which only irritated Julian more as he tightened his grip on his weapon’s hilt. "Come on then! I’ll kill you all!"

While Julian gave free rein to his emotions, Nox, on the other hand, was in full euphoria. He ran straight toward the densest group. The dogs growled as they saw him approach. One of them immediately leaped, aiming for his head.

Unlike a sane human, Nox raised his hand, his smile widening to the point of threatening to tear his face apart. "That’s it, come all of you!"

He caught the creature’s jaw mid-air. His fingers sank into the flesh with a disgusting sound.

With pure physical strength, despite his frail appearance, he forced the jaws open. The bones cracked as he pulled harder and harder.

The body tore in two with a wet noise. Organs spilled onto the ground. Black blood splashed his face, his chest, the sand around him.

He let the two halves drop without even looking at them. His smile widened. ’This feels so good...’ he thought, closing his eyes for a moment, refusing to dodge the claw swipe aimed at his torso.

A wide gash opened across his chest as his blood poured out. Nox grimaced for an instant, then ran his finger along the wound, savoring the tingling sensation he felt.

He then brought his hand to his mouth, tasting his own blood as his face twisted in obscene excitement.

Two others attacked immediately, trying to overwhelm him. The first tried to bite his leg. Nox raised his knee, blocked the jaw with his shin, then drove his claws into the beast’s skull.

He pushed his fingers deep. Then pulled downward. The animal’s face tore open. An eye dangled out of its socket before being ripped away.

The second took advantage of the moment to jump on him from the side.

Nox took the impact, both rolling across the ground. The creature tried to close its fangs around his throat.

Nox placed his forearm between its jaws. The teeth sank into his skin, but against all expectations it only brought him insane pleasure.

"To thank you, I want you to taste this exquisite pain too," he shouted, laughing heartily as he raised his other hand and drove his claws under the beast’s ribcage, searching for its heart.

With a sharp pull, he ripped it out, still feeling the faint beats as warm blood streamed down his forearm. The beast’s body convulsed before collapsing on top of him.

Nox pushed the lifeless carcass away with an annoyed gesture. Then he prepared to face the others, who now seemed much more hesitant. Faced with such brutality, despite their numerical advantage, their instinct told them to be careful.

After a few minutes of hesitation, one finally attacked, leaping to aim for Nox’s neck. He stepped back, then slid to the side and sliced the tendons of its hind legs with a quick motion.

The creature fell howling. Nox looked at it with a delighted smile but didn’t kill it instantly; instead he drove his claws into the eyes of another coming from behind before crushing its head into disgusting pulp.

Another fool succumbed to a punch, and before it could get up, Nox pounced and plunged both hands into its abdomen.

He tore the beast’s belly open by force.

The entrails slid onto the sand.

Faced with such horror, even the dogs became frightened, realizing that here they were not the predators but the prey... so the rest began to retreat quickly.

Nox raised his head, eyes gleaming.

"You’re leaving already?"

He grabbed a piece of bone torn from the ground and threw it; the improvised projectile pierced the neck of an unlucky one that collapsed a few meters away.
