Chapter 226: Kris version Dark Sas*ke

In an area quite far from the Stavenger faction, but still at the heart of the same desert domain, the wind swept across the cliffs of a narrow canyon. Sand slipped into the cracks of the rocks, and the fading daylight gave the walls a darker shade.

Sheltered behind a natural promontory, two figures observed a map spread out on a table, a makeshift HQ.

Prince Adrian stood upright, hands placed on either side of the parchment. His expression was calm and detached. Beside him, Kris sat on a stone block, forearms resting on his knees.

Kris had changed quite a bit in recent months.

His complexion was darker, marked by relentless training. His build was much more muscular and bandages wrapped his forearms and hands, hiding repeated injuries he had inflicted on himself through constant practice. His hair was still red, but the roots had turned white.

This was not trivial. It was proof that he had fully awakened the Pendragon lineage.

Kris raised his head.

"The death of my sister will have to remain unpunished?"

The silence lasted a few seconds, then Adrian spoke without lifting his eyes from the map.

"Of course not. No one can take me for a joke, not even the legendary Pendragon family."

"I made the right choice by becoming your ally, Your Majesty."

Adrian sketched a faint smile.

"I expected nothing less from you."

He straightened the map and pointed to an area to the west.

"After we avenge your sister, we’ll deal with Kaiser."

Kris slowly nodded.

"And what will you do if Prince Julius interferes?"

Adrian finally lifted his gaze. His expression remained serene.

"Well, we have no other choice, Kris. Julius is certainly an honest man. But you saw it just as clearly as I did... Evil must be eradicated at the root by force and not by empty words."

Kris crossed his arms, thinking.

"Indeed, the prince is still quite naive on this point. I wonder if the empire will manage to keep its supremacy when the time comes for him to take over from the emperor?"

Adrian briefly turned his eyes toward the horizon.

"Well, we all hope so, Kris, we all hope so..."

His tone remained neutral. Yet deep inside, he was jubilating.

Kris was completely on his side. If he managed to eliminate Godwin, and Kris then rose to the head of the Pendragon family, the balance of power in the Empire would change dramatically.

Adrian calmly folded the map.

"For now, our scout has reported that the Pendragon faction was 2 km to the west in a canyon. They have undoubtedly found a site where elemental mana has concentrated in liquid form."

Kris raised his head.

"Liquefied mana? That’s a resource that dark elf alchemists would kill for, after all it’s the base ingredient for creating potions, even if the lake might be corrupted by the surrounding demonic mana."

Adrian nodded.

"Exactly. Even corrupted, it remains a precious source of energy and resources."

He stared straight into Kris’s eyes.

"Your mission will therefore be to seize this resource."

Kris showed no hesitation.

"Fine, and the Pendragon faction students present? Their deaths would surely trigger an investigation."

The wind blew harder between the rocks.

Adrian placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Collateral damage is necessary to send a strong message to Godwin, without him being able to find clear proof of our involvement... We’re going to beat him at his own game."

Kris held his gaze for a few seconds, then nodded.

"Then we will leave no witness capable of tracing back to us."

Adrian removed his hand and adjusted his gloves.

"Exactly."

He looked toward the canyon to the west.

"Godwin must understand that opposing us comes at a price."

...

Adrian had sent no one else but Kris.

He saw no point in it, since the latter had now become a walking power plant all by himself.

Alone, he represented a striking force capable of taking down fifty C-rank warriors. Since the complete awakening of the Pendragon lineage, his Arcane mana constantly circulated in his veins, reinforcing his physical power.

Being the protagonist of a novel was not something to be taken lightly. It meant that the world seemed to adapt around his decisions. Even if Kaiser had caused quite a few butterfly effects, he had simply become more powerful more quickly.

Kris adjusted his hood to conceal his hair with white roots. He then fixed a dark mask on his face, plain, without ornament. His spear rested on his back, held by a reinforced leather strap.

He simply nodded toward Prince Adrian and Kris version Dark Sasuke set off.

...

It was exactly noon when Kris reached the outskirts of the canyon reported by the scout. The sun shone without any cloud obstruction, crushing the desert landscape with white light. The heat was stifling, and combined with the ambient demonic mana, an ordinary human (commoner) could not survive thirty minutes here.

Down below, a small group of students was guarding the edges of a natural basin nestled between two rock walls. At the center, a strange body of water shimmered faintly. It was not ordinary water. Aquatic elemental mana had concentrated there until it liquefied.

Two scouts stood guard at a distance, posted on a small dune. While the others collected this precious resource.

One of them narrowed his eyes.

"Did you see that?"

"See what?"

"Over there... behind the dunes."

He took out binoculars and adjusted them in front of his eyes.

"What is that, monsters?"

His comrade frowned.

"What are you talking about, we just cleared the area."

He snatched the binoculars from his hands and looked for himself.

The sand rippled under the heat.

There was nothing.

"Huh? It disappeared? Was it a mirage?"

The other hesitated.

"Should we tell..."

"It will be useless."

A cold voice rang out behind them. Even though it suddenly felt hotter.

The two scouts froze.

Despite the intense desert heat, they immediately felt another heat, far more oppressive. An unpleasant sensation... Their blood was beginning to boil in their veins.

They turned sharply.

A hooded figure stood just a few meters away.

"Wh-who are you!?"

"I’m the one asking questions!"

They instinctively drew their weapons. Both were D- rank warriors. And therefore in numerical superiority.

But against Kris version dark, that meant nothing.
