Chapter 210: The Predators and the 5 Beasts

When the last member finished introducing themselves, Kaiser swept his gaze across the room. The dim lighting of the underground chamber contrasted with the palpable tension that already reigned.

"Since we are all introduced, let’s begin," he said in a deep voice that echoed against the walls.

He paused, letting his words hang in the air before continuing.

"This meeting has a specific purpose: to discuss the demonic mana that has recently spread across several regions."

Everyone here had witnessed this wave of corrupting energy.

"What you call ’demonic mana’ is in reality nothing more than a rift rupture," Kaiser explained.

"That’s where the monsters we’ve fought all these years came from," Ragnar interjected.

"Exactly," Kaiser confirmed. "And the rift broke open because of one single thing."

He locked eyes with each person present, one by one.

"The Key of Solomon. The unique grimoire that allows the summoning of demons on Earth."

The silence that followed was deafening. Then came the explosion.

"What? But that’s impossible!" Kara exclaimed, abruptly standing up.

"How can such a terrifying object even exist?" Ayil frowned.

"The Spectrum used it without us knowing? Is that why they attacked us?" Leandra added.

"Calm down!" Kaiser ordered, raising his hand. He waited for the agitation to subside before continuing. "Each explanation in its own time."

"As you all know, since you often hear me mention it, many people wonder who this Nostradamus is."

The Beasts froze, attentive.

Most of them did not know Kaiser intimately, except for Kara or Ragnar who knew him a little and therefore owed him unwavering loyalty, a sort of cult, toward the leader who had created this organization that had saved them... Each from different messes, even if for Ragnar, this loyalty was more toward Eleanor than toward Kaiser himself.

"In reality, I consider myself nothing more than the blade of Nostradamus... If I was able to free you from your cells, if I was able to offer you a new life within Black Neon, it is solely thanks to him."

Kaiser lowered his head for a moment then removed his mask, revealing his face.

"You... You’re young..." Sakura the Neko murmured; after all, many thought it would be a seasoned warrior.

The Predator smiled:

"As you just did, I suppose it’s my turn to introduce myself now..."

The room remained silent, but aside from the Beasts, certain high-ranking members of the Jackals or the Spiders, and therefore Eleanor and Gunar, were also present even though they stayed in the shadows.

"I was born into a family without talent, without any particular aptitude; at 15 years old, as a noble, I obtained a mediocre magical talent..."

Leandra, who was following attentively, cut in: "Excuse me, The Predator... I... For a human of the nobility, isn’t it fatal to have no mana skill?"

Kaiser nodded: "Yet no one in this room..." As he spoke, the dominating aura of the Sundering Eclipse surged through the room... Coupled with the Aura farming... Its density could shock more than one.

"Kuh-!"

In an instant, the air became automatically heavier...

Those who were seated felt their muscles lock... Sweat beaded on several foreheads in the space of a second.

Even those far away, mere D- and C-rank warriors, lost consciousness; after all, an aura approaching S-Rank was no joke.

Gunar remained in a corner; he could withstand it but it made him relatively uncomfortable.

"What dense Aura... Even among half-beasts, I’ve never seen anything like it... It’s as if it’s limitless..."

"I could never have reached such a level of power on my own. But Nostradamus showed me the way. He opened my eyes to the reality of the world."

"What reality?" Ragnar asked softly.

"That of the hypocrisy of the angels," Kaiser replied with bitterness. "They are not so different from the demons they fight. Both manipulate us, use us as pawns on their chessboard."

Shocked exclamations ran through the room.

"But the angels protect us, even if they are linked to humans. During the Thousand Years’ War, they..." Sakura stammered.

"That’s what they want you to believe," Kaiser retorted. "After all... They too are merely pawns of the Constellations."

New wave of confusion among the assembly.

And even there, Eleanor who had been so serene, frowned; they had heard of the Constellations from the mouth of her former master... But she would never have believed she would hear it here.

’This Kaiser is not as simple as he appears...’ she thought.

"The Constellations? What the hell is that?" Leandra wondered aloud.

"Who are they?" Ragnar corrected, his gaze piercing.

Kaiser shook his head, an expression of regret on his face.

"I’m afraid I cannot tell you more. Neither about them nor about the Twelve Thrones."

"Why?" Ayil protested. "If we have to fight, we need to know what we’re fighting against!"

"Because if I speak of it," Kaiser explained in a voice that grew lower, "they will know that we are aware of their existence. They will sense our gaze upon them. And if that happens, death will be the only thing awaiting us."

The tension in the room became almost unbearable. Eyes met, seeking comfort in others’ worry. Some sweated, others clenched their fists so hard their knuckles whitened. No one would doubt his words; after all, what interest would he have in lying?

"But then, aren’t you in danger? And what can we do?" Sakura asked in a slightly trembling voice.

Kaiser chuckled: "I am just a person on borrowed time; I will not be present all the time... At least only to teach you how to fight them when the time comes."

"This," Kaiser added, pulling out a sort of grimoire...

From his coat, he drew a book bound in chains. The materials used to construct it were expensive and gave off an ancient aura...

"Nostradamus possesses a gift of prophecy different from that of Her Holiness of the Holy Cathedral. Her Holiness’s foresight is limited; after all, she is merely a vulgar half-angel... Nostradamus’s approaches omniscience. It allows him to see everything that happens, everywhere, simultaneously. The past and the future hold no difference for him..."

He let the information sink in before continuing.

"Even if I... I don’t know... But I strongly suspect that he is a Constellation... He wants to free mortals from the clutches of the other Constellations and the Twelve Thrones. But I cannot say more without putting you in danger."

"How did you meet him?" Ragnar asked, seeking to understand.

Kaiser closed his eyes, plunged into his memories.

"It was when I was a child. I fell into a rift, a deep crevasse where daylight did not reach. I thought I would die, lost in the darkness. It was there that he found me. Nostradamus saved me, extended his hand in the darkness. Then he gave me this book."

"The Grimoire of Nostradamus. Thirty-three prophecies that will inevitably come to pass."

He placed the book on the table, its cover seeming to absorb the light.

"Unfortunately, these prophecies have leaked," he continued. "Many powerful people now know them."

"That’s why you were so far ahead," Eleanor murmured, suddenly understanding Kaiser’s bizarre plans.

’Obtaining that forest with precious deposits without ever setting foot there...’

"Exactly," Kaiser confirmed. "I could foresee certain events thanks to this book. All of this is Nostradamus’s work, not mine. I am merely his messenger."

"The reason I am revealing all this to you today is simple: you are my Beasts, the closest to me. You must be ready for what is coming."

"What is coming?" Sakura asked, her voice choked with anxiety.

He held her gaze without blinking.

"I am obligated to disclose all the prophecies. The most powerful in this world already know them. We can no longer keep them secret."

He opened the grimoire to a marked page.

"Their goal in revealing them was to give mortals a chance. A chance to understand that they have been pawns of demons and angels for millennia. That our free will is nothing but a carefully maintained illusion."

Among them, Ragnar was the most suspicious. "Pawns, huh?" he murmured.

"That’s exactly what I’m saying," Kaiser replied.

"But why reveal this to us now?" Kara insisted. "Why reveal this truth to us. Can we do anything about it?"

"Because we can do something about it," he replied firmly. "By knowing the chessboard, we can refuse to be pawns." Then he continued. "I therefore order that the directive be given in all Black Neon barracks. In every branch. You will tell our men what I have just told you."

He pushed the grimoire toward the center of the table.

"Here is my first and undoubtedly my last mission that I order you to carry out... Protect the destitute by showing them the truth..."
