Exploring Technology in a Wizard World-Chapter 695 - 693: The Fugitive
The center of the city.
After the great war, few buildings in the city remained intact, but there happened to be one here.
Inside the building, a meeting was taking place, discussed what, very secretive — which in itself leaked some information.
Before long, the meeting ended, and people walked out one after another.
Outside the building, Justice Girl Naile and Cat Slave Girl Heidi stood, seeing familiar faces, they quickly approached, each grabbing an arm, and said, "Teacher, what was the meeting about?"
Witch Cesi, who naturally exuded an air of mystery, frowned deeply. Hearing her two students’ question, she sighed and replied, "Ah, it’s about some bad news. I thought it would be delayed until we had completely eradicated Deep Blue Castle’s people, but it’s starting now."
"But it doesn’t matter anymore." Cesi’s tone changed, "I have already prepared to take you two away. You should go and pack now... never mind, there’s no need, just follow me now, leave this place." Having said that, Cesi walked toward the city outskirts with Heidi and Naile.
Heidi looked at Cesi’s face and asked softly, "Teacher, why the rush to leave? Haven’t most of the enemies been eradicated? Are you still afraid they will make a comeback?"
"A comeback? I don’t rule out that possibility, but it’s highly unlikely," Cesi sighed and explained, "The main reason is that since Deep Blue Castle has been defeated, the whole East Coast will need to be redivided among the powers.
Initially, according to the discussions at the previous Revenge Exchange Conference, the division was almost done with no conflicts. But unforeseen was the horrendous loss caused by the final battle; if not for an unnamed powerful being stepping in, we might not have survived.
This development is different than expected. After all, when the enemy attacked, they didn’t distinguish between members of different Wizard Organizations, naturally leading to some organizations suffering heavy losses and a great decline in strength, while others incurred lighter losses and retained some power.
The latter will want more benefits, even trying to snatch them from the former. The former will definitely not agree, at best leading to friction, at worst to outright battles.
I thought this kind of dirty work would at least wait until Deep Blue Castle’s remaining forces were fully cleared out and all the fleeing enemies were eradicated. But now, some can’t wait any longer; the meeting just now was about this. Alas, my reason for joining Green Wind Gathering Place was to avoid such strife and live a quiet life. With this happening, it looks like I can only leave. Let’s go."
"Okay," Heidi and Naile nodded.
...
Cesi’s decision was the right one, and her timing to leave was timely.
She had only just left with the two girls when, that very night, friction occurred among multiple Wizard Organizations within the city. Had they not been promptly suppressed, it’s unknown how chaotic it would have become.
But even with suppression, many harbored various ulterior motives. After some discussion, the main goal remained to eradicate the remnants of Deep Blue Castle’s forces, killing all fleeing enemies to prevent retaliation.
However, people went about this task with increasing perfunctory effort, focusing more on quietly vying for benefits. This allowed the already vulnerable remnants of Deep Blue Castle’s forces, led by loyalists, through careful planning, to successfully cause trouble for the Revenge Alliance’s chasing wizards multiple times, resulting in significant casualties.
Of course, within the remnants of Deep Blue Castle’s forces, there were also many wizards whose loyalty to Deep Blue Castle wasn’t strong. After the death of Sieg Adolf, they didn’t realize they had less than a month to live, still desperately fleeing, trying to escape to a secluded place, to live in obscurity and just survive.
...
The night.
Deep Blue Castle’s Western Mountain Range, hundreds of miles away, there was an inconspicuous cave.
A bonfire burned inside the cave, and beside it, a tall and thin fugitive wizard from Deep Blue Castle sat cross-legged. The wizard looked extremely disheveled, his clothes torn and stained with dried blood. His pale face and the sour stench that enveloped him suggested he had gone days without food or a bath, looking barely better than a beggar.
Yet the gaze of this fugitive from Deep Blue Castle was sharp as he squinted at the fire, seemingly deep in thought.
"Tap, tap, tap..."
Suddenly, faint footsteps echoed from the direction of the cave entrance.
The tall and thin wizard’s gaze turned piercing, and with a swift lift of his hand, a green magic wand appeared, ready to cast a spell.
Then someone stepped into the cave, a slender witch, just as bedraggled as the male wizard, her face marked with scars and slightly out of breath as she said, "It’s me, don’t attack!"
"Whew—" The male wizard exhaled in relief, put away his short wand, and looked at the witch, asking, "Ellie, how is it? What’s the situation?"
"I’ve checked around, and it should still be relatively safe. Those dog-like wizards haven’t tracked us here," the witch replied.
"That’s good," the male wizard nodded.
"Gab, I think we should just make a turn here and head north," the witch stepped closer to the fire, taking a seat not far from the male wizard, and pondered aloud, "From what I’ve seen, they have the fewest people deployed to the north. We have every chance to get through, then take a ship from the port and head to the Main Continent."
The male wizard named Gab glanced at the witch named Ellie and said indifferently, "If you want to die, then go ahead and do it."
"What do you mean?" Witch Ellie frowned.
Male Wizard Gab explained, "Indeed, there are fewer of them to the north, but a bit further north lies Rotten Swamp, White Mist City, Black Evil Castle, Rose City—several strongholds of wizard organizations. It’s easy to enter but hard to exit. Going north would be certain death if our identities were exposed!
Moreover, even if we can safely pass through these wizard organizations’ strongholds, we cannot go to the Main Continent. You and I are only Level One wizards, lucky to be alive this time. But I’ve heard the Main Continent is far more dangerous than the East Coast. If we go there, we’ll be as helpless as Wizard Apprentices, with no ability to defend ourselves. Who knows what trouble we might encounter and be killed for."
"Then what do you suggest we do?"
"If you ask me, we head east."
"East? Back to Deep Blue Castle?"
"Of course not back to Deep Blue Castle. Instead, we find an opportunity to make a big detour, leaving the East Coast by sea. Then we find an island to hide out on, like Lisben Island or even farther away, Smans Island. Unless the other wizard organizations on the East Coast truly go mad, they won’t bother to find that place, ensuring our safety.
Once there, we won’t run into any powerful wizards either and will completely have the capability to control a small country. When the time comes, it will be whatever we want, much better than going to the Main Continent," the male wizard stated earnestly.
Witch Ellie’s eyes sparkled with longing as she listened, "Alright, let’s do as you say."
As her words fell, footsteps suddenly sounded again at the entrance of the cave.
