Chapter 23: Chapter

When we arrived back at the campsite, the fish had already been roasted. Mother had started sharing them, giving everyone one each. There were ten fish in total, and all of them had been successfully cooked.

After giving everyone theirs, including me, three extra fish remained.

"Long’er, these are the remaining fish. I’ll leave them for you to sort out," Mother said. With that, she went back to her spot and sat with her children, enjoying her fish.

I stared at the three fish and pouted. Then I turned to look at Fu Sheng, who was quietly eating his fish, his face completely blank.

I stood up and went to sit beside him. But as soon as I sat close, he moved slightly away, leaving a small gap between us.

I just smiled.

He doesn’t know how stubborn I can be.

I moved closer again. This time, I was so close that our bodies were almost touching.

"Hubby, why are you avoiding me? Don’t you know it makes me sad?" I said softly.

He finally looked at me and raised his eyebrows. He was clearly wondering how his cold and arrogant wife had suddenly become so clingy and talkative.

"What do you want?" he asked in his usual tone.

I sighed. "You really love using those words, huh?"

He didn’t answer. He simply turned his face away and continued eating.

I rolled my eyes and smiled slightly before looking back at my own food.

But just as I turned, I caught someone trying to take one of the three fish that had been placed aside.

It was Li Manman.

Everyone’s gaze slowly shifted and landed on Li Manman and me.

I raised the fish I was holding and pointed it at her.

"What do you think you’re doing?" I asked coldly.

Li Manman gave me an annoyed look before replying, "I just wanted to take one fish. I’m hungry."

A slow laugh left my lips.

"Hungry?" I repeated. "And who do you think you are, taking food just because you’re hungry?"

Li Manman clenched her fists. "I helped with the arrangements earlier. Giving me a little food wouldn’t hurt, right? Everyone in the family already has one."

Her words only made my anger rise.

I turned to Madame Fu.

"Mother, do you hear that?" I said. "This maid didn’t help you because she cared. She helped because she wanted something in return."

Madame Fu’s expression turned sad. She understood what I meant.

Li Manman quickly shook her head. "That’s not true! I didn’t—"

"Enough."

I suddenly stood up and threw one of the roasted fish at her.

Li Manman barely caught it, shocked.

"Now you have the fish," I said coldly.

I walked slowly toward her until we were only a few steps apart.

"Make sure you stay away from us," I warned her, my voice low and firm. "We don’t need your help. And we never will."

Li Manman turned quickly to Madame Fu and Master Fu, her eyes already turning red.

"Madam... Master... please say something for me," she said, her voice trembling. "I was just hungry..."

Madame Fu looked troubled. She sighed softly and spoke gently.

"Su Long... she was only hungry. It’s understandable why she wanted to eat too."

Before I could reply, Fu Sheng’s voice rang out from behind me.

"She was hungry," he said, looking at his mother, "but she didn’t ask. She just walked up and took the fish like she was entitled to it. That’s wrong."

I nodded, a small smile forming inside my heart.

My husband was actually supporting me.

Madame Fu opened her mouth, but no words came out this time. She only sighed again, clearly caught in the middle.

Li Manman became nervous. She lowered her head and started pinching her fingers over and over again.

That movement caught my attention once again.

I stared at her hands.

That habit...

But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t remember where I had seen it before. My mind felt blank.

Master Fu finally spoke.

"Li Manman, take the fish and go back to your place," he said seriously. "From now on, mind your own business. That would be best for you."

She nodded quickly, not daring to argue.

But before turning away, she shot me a hateful glare.

Only after that did she leave and return to her spot.

I frowned deeply.

I really felt like pulling her eyeballs out.

How dare she still look at me like that after taking my hard-earned fish?

....

After I finished eating, I picked up the two remaining fish.

They were still warm in my hands.

Without saying anything to anyone, I turned and walked toward the other side of the Fu family’s resting area.

Fu Sheng exchanged gazes with his family as Fu Tong asked, "Is sister in-law going to give Fu Fong and his family the remaining fishes?"

"It belongs to her, whatever she wants to do with it, she has all the right to." Madame Fu said slightly as she flashed a quick look at Fu Sheng, she was already wondering what was going on in her son’s mind at this moment.

Before she could say anything, Fu Sheng stood up and followed behind me.

As I walked closer, Fu Jia and Bai Ming were the first to notice me.

They pointed in my direction, their faces already lighting up with wide smiles.

"Mother, look," Fu Ji said excitedly. "Su Long has finally come back to her senses. She’s coming to give us some food."

Aunt Fu smiled, then nudged her husband with her elbow.

He sighed in relief and glanced at Fu Fong, who was already sitting straighter, his expression full of pride.

"I thought that woman had fallen for Fu Sheng," Aunt Fu said lightly. "Turns out she’s still very much in love with you."

Fu Fong smirked and dusted his shirt as if he had just heard the most natural thing in the world.

"Of course she is," he said confidently. "She’ll do anything to get my attention. She’s been acting strange lately. To make up for annoying me, I’ll have her massage my back later."

His father chuckled beside him.

Not far away, Fu Li saw me walking toward them. She frowned at first, but then her eyes brightened.

So brother told her to bring me some after all, she thought happily. Finally, I’m saved.

I continued walking toward them slowly, the two fish still in my hands.

Looking at faces full of so much hope and pride, i felt like laughing, "This is gonne be so much fun.. haha."
