Exile with Storage Space: Family Fortunes in the Barren Lands-Chapter 680 - 0633: Li Yuzhu’s New Plan (2)
Li Yuzhu and Mu Yuanxiu plan to return home before the Mid-Autumn Festival on the fifteenth of August.
But it’s only the beginning of August now, and there’s still time before they leave. Lady Lou invites Li Yuzhu to enjoy a few days in Zhen An Prefecture before returning. She also mentions that there will be a chrysanthemum appreciation banquet at the mansion, saying that since it’s rare for Li Yuzhu to visit the Prefecture, she can admire the flowers before leaving.
It is indeed a rare gesture of hospitality. To save face for Li Yu En, Li Yuzhu agrees.
In the evening, she and Mu Yuanxiu stay at Li Xingsheng’s small residence.
During the day, Li Xingsheng takes Mu Yuanxiu to the Prefecture Government Office to handle official business, while she goes to the Lou Mansion to meet Li Yu En.
The chrysanthemum banquet is scheduled for the eighth of August, four days later.
With plenty of time before the banquet, Li Yu En takes Li Yuzhu to explore various places in the Prefecture daily.
Li Yuzhu does not forget her old profession; wherever she goes, she visits medical clinics to inquire about the consultation fees charged by doctors and medical issues.
After all, this is the Prefecture. The doctors here are much more skilled than those in Qingyang County.
Experienced doctors here even perform some simple surgical operations.
For instance, they can cut open the flesh on a leg, remove shattered bones, stitch it up, and set a splint to heal the injured leg.
What worries Li Yuzhu the most is gynecology.
Yesterday, while she was shopping with Li Yu En, they encountered two cases of dystocia, where both the mother and child were lost.
Today, passing by a household, they encountered another case of life lost due to childbirth complications.
Seeing the grieving family crying incessantly, Li Yuzhu felt heavy-hearted yet didn’t know how to console them.
Li Yu En tugged at her sleeve, "Third Sister, birth, aging, sickness, and death happen every day. Don’t dwell on it, let’s go."
"Give me my daughter back! You quack, you witch, give me my daughter back!" A middle-aged woman clutched an elderly woman, hitting her repeatedly, "My daughter was only nineteen, and her child was already formed. How could they not survive? Heavens, strike this witch with thunder!"
The elderly woman, accused of being a witch, had bloodstains on her apron and hands, which were stained with uncleaned blood as well.
She kept pleading, "Childbirth is a matter of fighting for life with King Yan. Which village doesn’t have cases of difficult births? I told you from the start, your daughter’s childbirth would be difficult. I did my best. Now that something has happened, why do you blame me?"
"Who else should I blame? You don’t even know how to deliver a baby, you fraud!" A young man, crying like a child, also hit the old woman.
From his crying words, it was clear that he was the husband of the woman who died in childbirth.
The nineteen-year-old mother seemed to have married not long ago, and it was her firstborn child.
He hadn’t even experienced the joy of being a husband or father before experiencing such a loss.
Li Yuzhu looked at Li Yu En, "I want to take a look at that family."
Li Yu En, worried she might get bullied, followed along, "Third Sister, wait for me, I’ll go with you."
The two sisters, along with the maid Liu Er Niu and two government officials accompanying them for protection, walked to the entrance of that family’s residence.
Li Yuzhu looked at the quarreling people, "Where are the mother and child? Let me take a look; I’m a doctor." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"They’re gone; what’s there to see?" The young man sobbed.
"Another one here to scam money? They’re gone; you have no chance to scam me, so get lost!" The middle-aged woman glanced at Li Yuzhu and cursed.
Liu Er Niu sneered, "We’re from the Prefect’s house. Who would care to scam money from you?"
The middle-aged woman ceased her crying, turned around, and took a closer look.
Spotting the two Government Officials squeezing through, she was immediately frightened and changed her expression.
"What do you... what do you want?" The middle-aged woman looked at Li Yuzhu and her companions with fear and shock.
She saw not only two Government Officials but also a young lady dressed in lavish clothing.
Also, the young lady and the little maid who spoke were dressed elegantly.
These must be people from the Prefect’s house. What do they want?
"I am a doctor. Let me see the mother and child. I want to understand what happened to them." Li Yuzhu said.
If it were anyone else, the family would have certainly ignored Li Yuzhu.
But knowing they were from the Prefect’s house, the family dared not block them and allowed Li Yuzhu and her companions to enter the courtyard.
The middle-aged woman, enduring her grief, led Li Yuzhu into the bedroom.
In the bedroom, two women were weeping bitterly by the bedside.
An elderly woman with greying hair and a middle-aged woman.
One was crying for a granddaughter-in-law and great-grandchild, while the other for a daughter-in-law and grandson.
These were the in-laws.
On the bed lay a young woman with a pale face, her cheeks plump, and eyes closed, unconscious.
The room was filled with the scent of blood.
Li Yuzhu quickly ran to the bedside to examine the young woman.
The two in-laws, surprised and angry at the sight of a strange young lady breaking in, cried out, "Where did you come from? Get out!"
"She’s a relative of the Prefect and a doctor," answered the young woman’s mother.
The young woman’s grandmother-in-law and mother-in-law looked at Li Yuzhu in surprise.
"Stop crying, she’s not dead! She’s just unconscious."
