Book 6: Chapter 94: A Bowl of Noodles

The young girl stared at the pale yellow tea for a very, very long time, as if she were examining a priceless treasure.

Yet the cup held nothing more than the cheapest bitter tea, stuff even commoners would turn their noses up at.

At last, after what felt like an eternity, she finally made up her mind. Lifting the chipped cup to her lips, she took a small sip.

Bitterness bloomed on her tongue, followed by a faint, lingering fragrance that clung between her teeth, refusing to fade for a long time.

“How wonderful.”

Tears silently streamed down her cheeks, dripping into the cup.

“I finally remember the taste of tea.”

Bitter and astringent… yet fragrant and sweet in the aftertaste. Simply irresistible.

She took another sip… then another… and another.

She then chewed gently on the soaked leaves between her teeth, savoring their taste.

*[ This… is the important matter you spoke of? ]*

The girl… no, the Dragon Eater heard Lilith’s bewildered voice echo inside her mind.

*[ All that… just for a cup of tea? And a bowl of beef noodles? ]*

“Mm.”

*[ Is it really worth it? ]*

“Of course. For a soul imprisoned for nine million years, who had forgotten even the taste of tea… aren’t these more than enough?”

After a brief silence, Lilith sighed, clearly pitying the Dragon Eater.

*[ Why didn’t you just say so earlier? I have the finest black tea and the best steak that’d blow this entire dump away in my storage ring… ]*

“No, Lilith.” 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Before she could continue, Dragon Eater interrupted her.

“I can’t enjoy those luxuries anymore.”

*[ Why not? Wouldn’t something better be even more worth savoring? ]* Lilith sounded genuinely confused.

“Because to me, those things are like the blazing sun.”

Not because they’d burn her, but because once someone had seen the brilliance of the sun, how could they bear to bask in the faint glow of a lantern?

*[ I still don’t get it. Are you saying that— ]*

Lilith was about to ask more when another cheery voice interrupted her.

“Noodles are ready!”

The owner emerged from the kitchen and served her signature dish proudly.

A steaming bowl of beef noodles!

Huge chunks of beef sat in a sea of red chili oil. The portion was so generous that the noodles were completely hidden underneath.

The strong smell of chili and spices hit the girl’s nose at once. One could easily tell that the beef was low-grade meat, but it still looked oddly appetizing.

“Well?” The owner grinned, placinng her hands on hips.

“Looks good, right? This one’s my best! The beef sauce recipe was passed down from my ancestors. It’s been perfected over generations and is sure to leave an impression!”

At that, she couldn’t help but glance at the menu still hanging on the wall.

Although beef noodles was her specialty, it wasn’t even listed on the menu.

Back when her father had just passed away, the dish just never sold. She’d assumed it was due to local preferences. Maybe people around here just didn’t fancy noodles. So, she quietly took it off the menu.

But now, as she stood there watching the girl, she remembered something.

When her father was here… the beef noodles actually sold pretty well.

Guess she’d have to add it back on the menu later.

When the bowl was served, the Dragon Eater stared at it speechlessly.

She looked at the pair of chopsticks resting neatly atop the bowl… then glanced at her hands. She flexed her fingers, then frowned.

How did one use these again?

“Oh! That’s right!” The owner, who had been watching her, suddenly slapped her own forehead.

She rushed back into the kitchen, rummaging through cabinets until she finally pulled out a set of old silver cutlery that belonged to her late father, tucked into the farthest drawer.

She scrubbed them clean, scalded them with boiling water, then hurried back and presented them to the girl.

“I almost forgot—a refined young lady like you should be using these.”

She proceeded to lay a napkin on the table before placing the fork and knife on it, just like those hotel waitresses Old Wang next door always raved about.

After doing all that, she bowed with a smile and took a step back.

The Dragon Eater fixed her gaze on the cutlery, then shifted it to the pair of chopsticks.

She shook her head. “I don’t want the fork and knife.”

“Teach me how to use these.” She pointed at the chopsticks.

“Huh?” The owner blinked at her. “But chopsticks aren’t exactly easy to learn…”

“It’s fine. Doesn’t that make it more interesting?” The Dragon Eater smiled.

The owner scratched her head, thoroughly baffled. These young ladies really were strange. But a request was a request.

She stepped forward and patiently demonstrated.

“Hold one like this… The other goes here… Yes, like that. Use your thumb and middle finger to apply pressure and grip…”

A few minutes later, she looked up in disbelief.

“You’re a fast learner!”

“Really? Thank you.” The Dragon Eater smiled. She clumsily picked up a piece of beef and lifted it from the bowl.

She held the beef in midair for nearly a full minute before smiling sweetly in satisfaction. It was the kind of smile a child wore when they were proudly showing off their achievement to others.

“Oh my, that’s amazing!” The owner clapped, as if she were watching her own daughter master the art of using chopsticks.

Then she slapped her own head again. “Ah! You have to eat quickly or the noodles will get clumpy.”

“It’s fine. I’m sure it’ll taste nice all the same,” the girl replied.

Slowly, she brought the glistening piece of beef up to her cherry lips.

The owner watched with bated breath.

The soul of beef noodles was its beef. This bite would determine victory or defeat.

The Dragon Eater bit into the meat and began to chew slowly.

The beef, stewed until tender, was soft, but she chewed for a very long time, as if savoring every note of flavor.

At last, she swallowed.

The owner clenched her fists nervously, waiting for the girl’s review.

But the girl didn’t say a word.

Instead, she set the chopsticks down… then suddenly buried her face in her hands and began sobbing.

This was the girl who had spoken of her past, hatred, and defeat. Yet now, before an ordinary bowl of beef noodles, the powerful girl wept like a child.

“W-what’s… wrong?” The owner panicked. “Is it not to your liking? I-I’ll make you a new one right away!”

She reached for the bowl, but the girl quickly caught her wrist.

“No… It’s delicious.”

Wiping her tears with the napkin, the girl choked out, “It’s because it’s so delicious that I… I couldn’t help myself. It’s just too delicious…”

The owner was stunned. She then began to tremble with excitement.

“Really?”

“Yes. It’s the most delicious thing I’ve had in a very long time…”
