Chapter 185: King Rezeph

After the nightmare that Esme had yesterday, she felt like she was missing a huge piece of her life. Something was amiss but she could not put a finger on it and it felt so wrong.

Everywhere she went, anything she did, she was hit with a sense of deja vu. Be it the canvas in her room or be it this dining room in front of her. It reminded her of the things that she did not remember.

Could it be related to her past? A past she wanted to remember so badly that her heart ached.

’’I am fine. It’s just... I did not get a wink of sleep since yesterday and it makes me feel light,’’ Esme slowly moved her hand out of his grip.

Guilt buckled up in her heart because of her discreet action. He was the man she was going to marry but she had never been able to let him touch her.

Why is that? She wondered but her thoughts did not linger there anymore as the door to the dining room was pushed open by the guards.

Jeremiah nodded at her, ’’You can rest later. If you still don’t feel well then we will get a physician.’’

Esme quietly nodded and stepped inside the dining room.

The grand dining room was made of glass entirely just like the rest of the castle. The wall which had the main door was opaque and so was the wall opposite to it.

The walls on either side were transparent and Esme could see the lush greenery out on the land through it. Flowers were in their full bloom and her eyes caught sight of the butterflies hovering above them.

This place was beautiful as always.

’’When did the King come back?" she questioned the man who pulled out a chair for her right next to the head chair, the chair which was on the left side of the King’s chair.

’’He came back two days ago,’’ Jeremiah moved to take a seat on the right side of the head chair.

Esme placed Leo on the golden chair on her left.

’’And he wanted to have lunch with us as soon as he came back.’’

The door to the dining room opened again and the sight of brocade robes fluttering greeted their sight as a man stepped inside. Dark grey eyes wise beyond their age and dark shoulder-length hair, the man’s slanted brows gave off a domineering aura around him as he made their way towards them with his tilted chin.

’’Your Majesty,’’ both Esme and Jeremiah stood up and bowed to the man whose footsteps came to a halt at the sight of them.

He nodded at Jeremiah and those who knew the man were well aware of how rare it was for him to acknowledge anyone’s presence.

There was a visible sparkle in Jeremiah’s eyes at the King’s action.

The King then turned to look at Esme and a hint of a smile graced his handsome face, ’’How have you been?"

’’I have been rather well, Your Majesty,’’ Esme answered, her tone polite.

The man’s brows tugged together slightly, ’’That’s not how I asked you to address me, little girl.’’

Esme kept a polite expression on her face, refusing to speak anything about it as she glanced at the man standing in front of her.

She has seen handsome men before. Most of the mermen she has encountered in the sea are good-looking, the man she was set to marry, Jeremiah... he was breathtaking.

But nobody compared to the man standing in front of her. In his mid-40s, he looked like he was in his late 20s. Like a man who stepped out of a dreamy painting. That’s what King Rezeph was.

People from all Kingdoms speculated his name, his age, and his appearance but their pieces of information varied from each other, as they have encountered the King of the West before but only this kingdom knew how glorious their King was.

From mystifying powers to the looks that could cause the downfall of Kingdoms, there was nothing that King Rezeph lacked.

The man sighed helplessly at her lack of reaction and he turned his attention towards the white little thing on the chair next to Esme.

Leo jumped on the man.

’’Hahaha, Little Leo,’’ Rezeph laughed as he played with the little beast.

Jeremiah was stunned.

Esme was already familiar with these scenes. Since the first day Leo met King Rezeph, he has liked the man, unlike the way he stayed away from Jeremiah.

As they started the lunch, Jeremiah glanced at the King, ’’How was your journey, Your Majesty?"

’’It was surprising,’’ The King said, looking down at his crystal bowl.

That caught Esme’s attention, ’’Surprising?" The whereabouts of the King were a mystery to everyone.

It is said that the King disappears from this Crystal Castle once in a while for his amusement and sometimes for the kingdom’s affairs.

In the past year, Esme has seen many such instances when the King left the castle under various disguises of a human.

Outside the sea, they lived in their human forms in the Crystal Castle. But the disguises the King chose for himself were deeply considered first. Sometimes a merchant, sometimes a child, sometimes...

’’I disguised myself as a beggar this time,’’ Rezeph said, placing Leo on the table and the beast strode back to his seat beside Esme.

Both Jeremiah and Esme were not surprised by King Rezeph’s words.

’’And the world has changed a bit in the past year. A great kingdom has met its downfall. The King and the Prince died, and the Duke and the Duchess vanished without a trace. All that’s left is the empty shell of a royal castle,’’ King Rezeph nonchalantly said.

’’That’s sad,’’ Esme whispered, looking down at her plate. She suddenly lost her appetite. How tragic it must be for a whole royal family to meet their doom in such a way, ’’Is there no one else to take over the throne?"
