Chapter 971: Chapter 62: Unfathomable (Part 4)

But in any case, Morrison had no time to chat idly with Church. He had to deal with Church as quickly as possible.

Thinking about this, Morrison drew the Secret Sword from his waist.

Ether infused the blade, and the plain Blade emitted a ghostly blue light. Holding the Blade horizontally in front of him, Morrison assumed an offensive stance. In the next moment, more intense Ether enveloped his body, and he shattered the ground under his foot, dashing swiftly toward Church.

While Morrison was making various assessments of Church, Church was also pondering over Morrison. From Morrison’s exquisite control of Ether, Church suspected he might be from the Origin School.

This thought had just emerged in Church’s mind when Morrison shattered this conjecture.

Amid his high-speed movement, Morrison’s figure suddenly accelerated again, and at this moment, subtle transformations occurred in his body. The muscles on his back began to writhe, and then pallid bones broke through the flesh, growing outward.

Ether transformed into flesh, covering the white bones, and at a visible speed, reinforced the extended limbs, with pure Ether draping it. Finally, a pair of gigantic wings made of Ether feathers unfolded.

Not the Origin School — Morrison’s Secret Energy belonged to the Elevation School.

Church hesitated not a second, decisively flinging out a grappling hook, lifting his body into the air as Ether surged across his surface, plummeting straight into the swirling fog of death.

Due to the tier difference, Church could only rely on these external aids to help him fight. A burning sensation pierced through Ether’s protection, reaching Church’s skin.

Before Church could take any further action, Morrison had already gripped the Secret Sword, plunging into the fog. Enhanced by the Elevation School and protected by Ether, for now, the Decay Plague couldn’t harm Morrison — not to mention that within moments of spreading, the concentration of the Decay Plague had decreased.

Pure white wings fluttered, stirring up a howling gust, easily dispersing the Decay Plague. The hurricane, mixed with toxins, swept across the surface of the rocks, imparting a rapidly weathering and decaying feel, like the effect of ages of erosion and rain, as dust proliferated.

With his wings, Morrison’s mobility reached a terrifying degree. Like lightning, he surged forward, leaving Church no chance to catch his breath, and appeared directly in front of Church.

The Secret Sword was raised high and then slashed downward.

Church’s heart nearly froze. He rarely engaged in direct combat with enemies, let alone against a higher-ranked Negative Power User.

Perhaps this was the price of being a hero.

Church burst out of the toxic fog, slamming hard against a side wall. He slowly kneeled on the ground, droplets of blood tricking down, a new bloody wound on his chest.

The acute pain stimulated Church’s nerves. He gasped for air as if deprived of oxygen; it had been so long since Church had a brush with death.

Indeed, since the first time adapting spontaneously and after the massacre with Palmer, Church became more cautious, choosing to operate alone and avoid any contact with others.

Just like Church did in his daily life.

But no matter how hard he tried, people are inherently social animals, and it’s hard to stop oneself from making contact with others, just like Church acting impulsively this time.

"Why did I do that? I could have escaped..."

Church questioned himself. Sometimes he couldn’t fathom what he was thinking; he guessed this was also an effect of the Secret Energy.

This damn Secret Energy was making Church’s life a mess, ruining the entire fate of the Bolton family.

Yet Church did it anyway.

Inexplicably so...

Morrison raised his Blade, preparing for a thrust, his wings vibrating to unleash incredible power, and the Blade reached in an instant but struck nothingness.

Not inexplicably.

Church stood up; the lethal Blade was only centimeters away. His presence rapidly waned, and even he vaguely forgot who he was.

But Church still remembered what he had to do and why he had to do it.

Church turned around, running toward the passageway leading out of the Fog Abyss Fortress. With his remaining power, he could no longer destroy the Decay Plague; he needed to tell more people about what happened here.

Morrison stood rigidly in place, feeling like he had forgotten something. Morrison then realized he also forgot why he activated the Secret Energy, why he drew the Secret Sword.

Fortunately, the confusion didn’t last long. Morrison gazed at the Secret Sword in his hand. The ghostly blue light surged, and the Blade seemed to come to life, devouring the blood on its edge. Then, a blood-colored chain extended from the Blade, stretching to the end of the passageway.

The memories that were supposed to be forgotten, as the chain extended, became clear again from obscurity.
