Endless Debt-Chapter 772 - 239: Rapids Road_2
Cinderella picked up the Event Card she revealed, it was the familiar Calm Time, which made her sigh in relief. If she had carelessly drawn a Malicious Event, causing a disaster, she’d inevitably feel a sense of guilt.
She then looked at Ewen, and Cinderella noticed something was off with Ewen’s expression.
"Ew...Ewen?"
Ewen’s face was somewhat pale, his fingers trembling as he flipped over the card, simultaneously, Bai Ou’s taunting, sharp voice rang out.
"Disaster Card · The Flood is Coming!"
Before the voice had even faded, the train began to shake violently, and dust obscured their vision, but this did not stop Bologue from assessing their current situation through the miniatures on the board.
A fork appeared on the tracks ahead, the original route was altered, and the Dawn rushed towards the wrong path. Continuing along the wrong path, Bologue saw the tracks stretch all the way to the coastline, eventually submerging into the raging seawater.
Bologue and Palmer exchanged a glance, both of them could read the irreconcilable shock in each other’s eyes. Before they could cry out, even more violent shaking impacted the Dawn, followed by the crashing sound of incoming water.
At this moment, the Dawn plunged into the seawater. Its sturdy armor could withstand demons and gales but couldn’t stop the seepage of water. Jets of water spurted from the gaps, and before more seawater poured in, Canary managed to shut the door with difficulty, but it was only a temporary measure.
Aimou shouted, "How could there be such a scenario!"
"How am I supposed to know!"
Palmer hurriedly pulled shut the door to the next carriage, which was already overflowing with seawater about to flood into the board game carriage.
There was no respite, water steadily pried open the narrow gaps, more robust streams pouring in, backflowing into the board game carriage, quickly submerging several people’s calves.
Bologue commanded, "Hart!"
Wading through, Palmer reached Hart, whose face had already sunk below the surface, strenuously lifting him and setting him on the board table. It was as if they were on a ship about to sink, and worse yet, they had no way to abandon ship and escape.
Once they left the Dawn, with its speed, they’d be left far behind in mere minutes. According to Bai Ou’s rules, they would be declared dead.
"Think of something, Bologue!"
Palmer once again pinned his hopes on Bologue, as for this predicament, his mind couldn’t come up with any solutions.
The water had already reached Bologue’s waist; being tall gave him some advantage, whereas for Aimou and Cinderella, the water was close to reaching their chests.
Aimou clumsily clambered onto the board table, like a seal chased by a hunter, while Cinderella was pulled up by Ewen so that most of her body floated above the water.
"Roll the dice!"
Bologue grabbed the die and threw it onto the board.
In the center of the board, Bai Ou’s fresh blood was accumulating in the groove below him. In each round, after triggering an event, resolving the current event would move them to the next round. Besides that, when the event remained unresolved, but enough time has passed in this round, it too progresses to the next round.
The accumulating blood in the groove served as an unconventional hourglass, marking this bloody countdown. Bologue didn’t understand why the game was designed this way earlier, but now he somewhat grasped the logic.
If players couldn’t resolve the events encountered in this round, they could find ways to prolong the situation, seeking a chance to counterattack in future Event Cards, rather than meeting an instant doom.
The dice rolled, and Palmer immediately lunged onto the board, picking them up to continue the cycle. When it came back to Ewen, he noticed the bulging train door.
"Careful!"
Ewen warned, but it was too late. The door shattered from the pressure of the water, rushing in like a flood, immediately knocking Bologue, who was near the door, into the board table, followed by Palmer, the chair, scattering chaotically, striking him black and blue.
The water level rose again, this time fully covering the board, the flood swept across the miniatures, also washing away the die that was about to reach Ewen’s hand.
"The die!"
Cinderella exclaimed. Without the die, they couldn’t continue the game and would be gradually drowned.
Ewen reached out, trying to catch the die before it completely vanished in the torrent. Just as it was within reach, the carriage shook violently again, tossing people around like sardines in a can. Fortunately, Ewen managed to grasp the die finally.
The water had reached chest height. Ewen struggled to throw the die, it arced beautifully before falling into the water, slowing down and finally coming to rest on the board.
The constantly laughing Bai Ou moved at that moment, grabbing the stack of cards with his blood-red arm, arranging them before him, as if unaffected, waiting for the others to draw cards.
Bologue propped up his longsword, slowly maneuvering forward to take his card.
"Damn it!"
Bologue cursed. Another Malicious Event showed up, only this time the demon couldn’t hinder them much. Under the Disaster Card’s influence, the Dawn completely entered the underwater tracks, entirely blocking the demonic assault.
It was Palmer’s turn to draw, and he revealed a weird new card.
"A flush toilet? Seriously!"
Amid Palmer’s skeptical gaze, the surrounding water began to reverse flow, rapidly rushing to the back of the carriage. Palmer couldn’t even steady himself before the water slammed him against the wall.
Aimou was swept by the current, crashing into the next carriage. Luckily, Bologue reached out in time, pulling her in. But to hold onto Aimou, Bologue anchored his other arm with the longsword. Because of this, when Hart’s body rolled off the board and, alongside the water, crashed into the door, no one could rescue him in time.
With a thud, Hart’s tall body got lodged sideways in the doorway, prompting Palmer to almost cheer.
"Haha!"
A delightful, enchanting laugh that belonged to no one rang out. Bologue knew who was laughing. As the game proceeded, the Joyous Desire Witch enjoyed herself immensely and couldn’t bother concealing her presence anymore.
Bologue shouted, "Whose turn is it!"
Thanks to the strange card Palmer drew, though perilously thrilling, it helped clear out some of the water, otherwise it would have submerged their heads by now.
Others advanced, taking turns drawing cards in front of Bai Ou, but despite several draws, none of the cards could resolve the immediate disaster.
Bai Ou screamed, "The disaster continues!"
The frigid seawater continued to flood the carriage, water level descending momentarily, only to rise again past their thighs. Bologue grasped the soaked die, casting it without pause.
Now Bologue felt like a true gambler, disregarding whatever was to come next... yet whatever came couldn’t be worse than present conditions.
When the die reached Cinderella’s hand, the door behind her suddenly jostled violently. This door led to the train’s front section, having never shown any anomaly before, to the extent that others forgot its existence.
Water seeped from the door’s gaps before utterly bursting open, splashing into a foamy white mist. Cinderella made no attempt to evade nor cover, taking the flood’s brunt, her slender figure instantly upended.
Bologue tried to shield Cinderella, but the rushing water moved too swiftly, toppling him. In the aftermath, Cinderella collided with Hart. She tightly gripped the die with one hand, clutching Hart’s fur at the neck with the other.
"I’m sorry!" 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
Cinderella apologized, clutching Hart’s fur even tighter, her body nearly parallel to the floor under the water’s force.
"Hold on!"
Ewen shouted, wading towards her.
