Endless Debt-Chapter 768 - 237 Descent Interval_2
Turning the key, pressing the accelerator, the engine roared to life, Palmer drove the car forward in a frenzy on the highway.
Church asked, "Where are we going!"
Hart said, "I don’t know, what about you?"
"I’m not sure either," Palmer shook his head, "But driving all the way can’t be wrong."
Serey felt the atmosphere wasn’t festive enough, he turned on the radio, and familiar voices echoed in the cramped car.
"Hello, listeners!"
Before Dudel could finish speaking, Palmer directly took over his words and joyfully shouted, "I’m Dudel, your loyal radio host broadcasting twice a day, welcome to this program!"
After the classic opening, Palmer started making faces at the rear-view mirror, "Honestly, I’ve always wanted Dudel to host my wedding."
"I think that’s great, it’s your old man’s style," Serey continued, "Can I be the best man?"
"Do you think that’s reasonable?"
Palmer held the steering wheel, accelerating recklessly on the deserted highway, "The Night Race Lord attending the Clarks’ heir’s wedding, heavens, it might turn into a bloody wedding."
"It’s okay, I can disguise myself," Serey winked at Palmer, "When your old man got married, I disguised myself as the best man once, and no one noticed."
"Ha?"
This time Palmer was taken aback, seeing his shocked expression, Serey laughed heartily.
Serey rolled down the window, the damp, cool wind brushing his face brought a clear feeling, the sky was gray, and clouds piled up like unresolved worries, he liked such weather, for then even the light-fearing Night Race could sit boldly in the car without cloaks shielding them from light.
"Sunshine!"
A bright female voice began singing on the radio, Palmer and the others joined in singing, nodding their heads to the beat.
"Yesterday my life was filled with rainy days!"
Riding the road, racing on the highway, tender green grass swept back like dust, pattering rain hit the windshield, a downpour enveloped the car.
"Sunshine!"
Cold rain continued outside, yet inside the car, the atmosphere was fiery, Palmer and the others kept singing joyfully along with the radio.
"Thank you for the sunshine bouquet of love!"
Palmer’s face was filled with a smile, gradually, he lost track of time, the heavy rain obscured the distant scenery, he felt as if he was driving on an endless highway.
Suddenly, Palmer spoke, "Serey, I feel like I’ve forgotten something."
"Forgot something?" Serey patted his pocket, "No worries, we can buy new ones on the road."
"No... I mean, it feels like someone is missing."
Palmer glanced at Serey, then at the rear-view mirror, he didn’t know how long he had been driving, Hart was sleeping soundly leaning to the side, while Church was staring at the curtain of rain.
"Missing someone? Who’s missing? Vasilina?" Serey still couldn’t understand what Palmer meant, "Didn’t you say so yourself? A solo trip, no ladies allowed."
"But... but..."
Palmer frowned tightly, he tried hard to think, but no matter how much he racked his brains, he couldn’t figure it out, he was sure that something was off, but he couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
Thump ——
A clear knock sounded, Palmer anxiously stepped on the brakes, with a screeching halt, Hart knocked against the back of the seat, and Serey almost kissed the windshield.
Hart, rubbing his head, shouted, "What are you doing!"
Palmer said, "I think I hit something."
"A rabbit?" Church remained calm, "There are many wild rabbits on Wind Source Highlands."
"I don’t know."
Palmer shook his head, for some reason, a strong sense of unease rose in his heart, as if something horrible was about to happen.
The heavy rain obscured the view, the visible range continuously shrank, until Palmer could hardly see what was happening outside from inside the car, just as he hesitated whether to get out, a hand suddenly slapped on the window, then it yanked the door open, and the raging storm invaded the car.
A dark figure seemed to want to melt into the mist, like an Evil Spirit emerging from the downpour, the humid chill quickly sobered Palmer, then the figure grabbed Palmer by his collar and forcibly dragged him out of the car, slamming him onto the wet highway.
Filthy water filled his mouth, Palmer coughed painfully, he was about to throw a punch in retaliation when the figure pulled him up again, Palmer tried to make out the figure’s face, but no matter how hard he focused, all he saw was an impenetrable darkness.
Strange murmurs echoed in his ears, it seemed the shadow was saying something to him, seeing no reaction it grew enraged, the murmuring sound turning shrill and harsh.
"Palmer!"
The distorted syllables formed Palmer’s name, the shadow shoved Palmer against the car, and with his body colliding with metal, the intense pain made Palmer feel as if several bones had broken, meanwhile, he was astonished to realize the sound of wind and rain had disappeared.
Palmer lifted his head, the rain-drenched highway was no more, the car filled with friends was gone too, he was now leaning against a bookshelf, the heavy collision had left it slightly tilted, and many books fell to the floor.
Palmer was somewhat at a loss for what had happened, he had just been in the Wind Source Highlands starting his solo trip, how did he suddenly end up here...
No... the real question wasn’t how he came here suddenly, but why he was on a solo trip in the first place.
"Are you awake?"
A voice drew near, the invisible darkness took shape, Palmer spent seconds reorganizing his memory, calling out that familiar name.
"Bo... Bologue?"
Seeing this, Bologue sighed in relief, his tight grip on Palmer’s shoulders loosened, "Good, you’re awake."
Bologue turned anxiously, "There’s something wrong here."
"What problem?"
Palmer’s mind still a bit unclear, the recent dream was so real, so real he couldn’t distinguish it from reality.
"Remember what the servant said?" Bologue walked toward Aimou, trying to wake her, "We can leave anytime, or we can stay and hide forever."
"We can indeed hide here forever, but that also means we’ll forever be ensnared by it."
Bologue lifted Aimou, vigorously shaking her, "Sunk into a beautiful, false dream."
Palmer became fully awake, a chill crawling down his spine, afterwards he asked puzzledly, "Have you been awake the whole time?"
"You know me, I sleep little, plus, I’m not at ease enough to sleep in such a place like you guys."
Bologue paused before continuing, "Don’t you think time here seems to have frozen?"
The view outside remained the same, an orange-red glow rose at the horizon, dark clouds pressed against the Dome, with thunder and lightning, just as it was when they arrived, it remained.
"I went to our room and discovered one issue, everything inside the room was perfectly replicated, except for the clocks, they all stopped."
Bologue calmly described, "This bizarre place is blurring our sense of time, who knows we might have already been here for several days."
Palmer murmured, "It seems like a halftime break... a pause in the game."
Bologue pressed on, he gradually figured out the Joyous Desire Witch’s trick, "What did you dream about?"
"Something... quite beautiful I’d say."
"Then everyone else is likely the same," Unable to rouse Aimou, Bologue simply slung her over his shoulder, "We need to wake everyone up, or at least drag them out, we can’t stay here forever!"
"The game was never paused," Bologue said, "The game is ongoing."
