Empire Building With Infinite Warehouse-Chapter 116: Blind Jump
The moment Commander Lena issued that order to her personal death squad, the entire garage erupted into a storm of gunfire and chaotic noise.
The high-level soldiers did not hesitate for a single second to pull their triggers, sending a relentless wave of magical projectiles tearing across the polished floor directly toward the broken doorway where the group was standing.
Kyle immediately stepped right into the line of fire to protect everyone, planting his boots firmly on the ground and raising his black sword to act as a giant shield against the incoming barrage.
But these elite soldiers were definitely not using the standard military rifles they encountered in the maintenance tunnel earlier because their weapons were charged with a strange magical energy.
The bullets hit the blade of Kyle’s sword with terrifying power, pushing the giant mercenary backwards and causing him to grunt loudly under the intense pressure of the sustained attack.
Julien crouched low behind Kyle and watched in pure horror as glowing cracks actually started forming along the dark steel of the sword.
The barrage was literally chipping the weapon away piece by piece, sending sharp fragments flying through the air and proving that even a tank like Kyle could not hold a defensive line against an entire squad of elite system users forever.
’Well, my brilliant negotiation tactics failed, and now we are all going to get shot to pieces in a dirty military garage,’ Julien thought to himself, frantically scanning the sprawling room for any possible escape route while the deafening sound of gunfire rang in his ears.
He looked to his left and saw Maya throwing her daggers with precision, but the enemy soldiers simply raised their energy shields to block the blades without even breaking a sweat.
He looked to his right and saw Aiden trying to return fire with his stolen rifle, but the normal bullets were completely useless against the high-tier tactical gear the death squad was wearing to protect themselves.
They were completely outgunned and totally out of time, leaving Julien with only one truly terrible option to keep his friends alive.
He turned his head and stared at the swirling Green Gate positioned right in the centre of the spacious room, watching the bright magical energy spin in a mesmerising but deeply terrifying circle.
Commander Lena wanted to use Aiden as a disposable test subject because the spatial pressure inside the portal usually crushed a normal person into dust before they ever reached the other side to see what was there.
’Jumping into a magical meat grinder is slightly better than getting shot in the head by a paranoid warlord,’ Julien reasoned desperately, deciding that taking a blind chance with the anomaly was their only remaining play in this doomed scenario.
"Stop shooting and get over here right now!" Julien yelled at the top of his lungs, reaching out to grab Maya and Aiden by the collars of their shirts to physically pull them away from the ongoing firefight.
Maya stumbled backwards and gave him a completely bewildered look, while Aiden almost dropped his useless rifle in surprise as Julien dragged them both directly toward the swirling green light of the portal.
"Are you completely out of your mind right now?" Aiden shouted over the chaotic noise of the gunfight, digging his heels into the concrete floor to stop himself from getting pulled any closer to the terrifying anomaly that was supposed to kill him.
"That portal is totally unstable, and it will literally rip us apart the second we step inside the energy stream!"
"Lena is about to rip us apart right here anyway, so I am taking my chances with the doorway!" Julien argued right back, keeping a firm grip on their shirts and dragging them another few feet toward the swirling green energy while trying not to trip over his own feet.
"Just trust me for five seconds and get ready to jump on my signal!"
Kyle let out a pained roar from the front line as another heavy volley of magical bullets slammed into his sword.
The weapon was basically holding together by pure luck at this point, and Kyle’s leather armour was already scorched from the intense energy splashing off the cracked blade.
"Kyle, you need to fall back to the portal right this second!" Julien screamed frantically, waving his free arm to get the giant mercenary’s attention before his sword shattered completely and left him totally defenceless.
Kyle risked a very quick glance over his shoulder and saw his friends standing right on the edge of the Green Gate.
He did not ask any questions or hesitate for a single moment, simply nodding his head and slowly walking backwards while keeping his damaged sword raised to block the incoming fire from the elite squad.
Commander Lena immediately realised exactly what the desperate merchant was trying to do, and her confident expression twisted into a mask of pure fury.
She was absolutely not going to let her valuable test subject and the only guy who supposedly knew her stabilisation formula escape into another dimension right under her nose after all the work she put into capturing them.
"Do not let them reach the anomaly!" Lena ordered her squad with a harsh scream, pointing her finger directly at the glowing green portal to mark the target.
"Blow them up right now!"
One of the elite soldiers standing near the front of the formation quickly unclipped a strange grenade from his tactical belt.
He pulled the pin with his thumb and tossed the explosive device high into the air, sending it flying across the garage in a perfect arc aimed right at their feet to stop their escape.
Julien watched the glowing explosive tumbling through the air and realised they were officially out of time to debate the safety regulations of interdimensional travel.
"Jump right now!" Julien screamed at his friends, tightening his grip on Maya and Aiden so nobody got left behind in the chaotic explosion that was about to happen.
Kyle threw his black sword directly at the incoming soldiers to buy them a final fraction of a second, turning his broad body and lunging toward the swirling green energy with everything he had left.
Julien closed his eyes and threw himself backwards, dragging Maya and Aiden right into the light of the Green Gate exactly as the military grenade hit the concrete floor and detonated with a deafening roar.
