Chapter 972: Busted

Jon hunter finally returned to the British museum after gathering all the ancient coins he could get from both the Mapple corporation and his own collection. It was a rather large sum, though it fitted in just two chests he carried using a square wheelcart. He rushed past the guards and Saint Germain and went straight back to the auction house. Once inside, the only thing he could see was Uriel sitting by himself in front of a crystal ball.

"You okay, lad?" Asked Jon when he noticed a strange glint on his eyes, something that quite reminded him of the past Uriel that would act aggressive towards anything even his friends.

"Sure," Uriel replied with an uncanny smile as he placed bids on artifacts. "now that everybody is gone and I have this place to myself, I can finally get ahead." While the shapeshifter only used her spare time browsing through the items at the auction house, now that she was wearing Uriel’s skin she benefited from his knowledge.

Now she knew what items were around the fair price, which were overpriced and she could also identify those that were grossly cheap allowing her to get a few priceless artifacts at the price of trinkets.

Jon sat by who he thought was Uriel and started an honest conversation that would have likely helped Uriel get to know his father better, but his words would never reach him as even the shapeshifter would forget them the moment she ran out of Uriel’s skin to keep up her mimicry.

In the megacity of New Texas, Nika now found herself surrounded by enemies while the zeppelins engaged on an airfight that took a bite out of the city as a consequence. Explosions raged all around her and she knew it was only a matter of time until they reached her and at that moment her identity would be exposed.

The only silver lining of Uriel’s plan so far had been that her enemies assumed she was now immortal in the true meaning of the word which was the only reason why they refrained from attacking her, but the downside to it was that her allies also thought the same thing and they left her behind without caring for her safety.

Nevertheless, she bravely stood in front of the many glares that would have killed her if they could. Her skill ’shadow clone’ was still active which meant that instead of the skinny sunkissed woman she actually was, even the gods saw the bulky body of a tattooed Uriel bearing a defiant expression on his face.

"You forced us to go this far, now there’s nothing we can do to save this city," Aphrodite let out regretfully, yet Nika did not understand what she was talking about and remained silent. The goddess of beauty took it as ’Uriel’ not caring and went on with her rant. "we truly came here to help, but what can we do when the people we’re trying to save turn against us? Now that he came, it’s over, it’s all over. You may as well blow up this city, none will survive Zeus’ wrath anyway."

With that said any further words were deemed unnecessary by the goddess of beauty and she rushed in to give Uriel a taste of her power despite knowing she was no match for him. Truth be told, it wasn’t a sense of duty or even any ill intentions towards Uriel, she only acted out of fear that Zeus would be angry if she had no battle wounds to show for. Aphrodite measured her force so she would only receive a small amount of damage from Uriel’s retribution skill, but the result was far different from what she expected.

"My cover is up, I guess." Nika said with a crooked smile as she struggled to clasp her hands against Aphrodite’s lame fist. She might not be a violent goddess, but her power was far beyond most divine beings and Nika felt it on her bones. If not for her shadow armor, her skin would have peeled off like a ripe fruit after receiving the brunt of a divine strike.

"You’re here? But then..." Aphrodite pondered, but Ares being not much of a thinker and more of a doer proceeded to hurl a spear to Nika’s face. It moved fast as a railgun, more than whistling it boomed in the air and it was only thanks to Nika’s reflexes that she was able to avoid it right before the projectile made contact.

"So long, suckers!" She mocked as she disappeared in the shadows, then proceeded to move across the battlefield towards the zeppelins, taking a brief second thanks to the safety of the shadows to confirm that Uriel had yet to reply to her messages. She wondered what could Uriel possibly be doing instead of replying at such crucial moment, though she would have fainted if she knew where he was at that moment.

The entrance to the Olimpieion was already more imposing that that of most dungeons and Uriel would have loved to have a chance to study the ancient structure that now looked brand new. He was led to the grand hall where deities from all cultures had taken refuge from the noisy outside world.

Some of them showed signs of anxiety due to the dire circumstances while others just relaxed showing that they either didn’t know or didn’t care which was not surprising considering how the ancient deities had seen civilizations rise and fall enough times to lose count. Humanity as a whole meant nothing for creatures that came from already extinct species.

However, when the prisoner was brought in the grand hall of the Olimpieion broke into many different reactions. Even the previously uncaring deities were now enraged that a human had been allowed into the sacred hall of the gods and to make things worse, he wasn’t even restrained.

"You lowly critters are soiling this place with your presence, but to dare bring a human!" Accused an eldritch being whose original species could no longer be recognized, although Uriel took a wild guess that it had something to do with an octopus.

"Your excellency the lord of the ancient wisdom of the water," The lorelei whose charm even affected gods took charge of the situation. "this prisoner cannot be restrained by any of the means we possess. It is also of the utmost urgency that we present him to Lord Zeus, but we deem the prisoner too dangerous to be let loose in this sacred place."

"Really? Is it that dangerous? It doesn’t look that bad... it’s kind of cute. Can I keep it as a pet?" Asked Leto as she leaned forward.

"If it’s so dangerous, then why didn’t you just kill him?" The octopus like creature Uriel found funny but other people would describe as the stuff nightmares are made of spoke with a gurgling voice.

"Don’t rush your judgement. Perhaps it is too sturdy for lowly creatures like them to kill and that is why they brought them. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it." Said Shamash, ancient god of justice as he waved his hand to destroy the prisoner.

That menial gesture barely motioned the air around its arm, yet some unseen force caused Uriel to explode inside out into tiny chunks of meat. Shamash was already turning around, when he noticed in the corner of his eye that the prisoner he just killed was still standing in the same place forcing the ancient deity to make a second take.

"What is this sorcery?" Shamash leaned in forward making a curious expression the same as Leto who had been left pouting when Shamash destroyed Uriel, but had regained her composure after Uriel regenerated.

"Are you talking to me?" Uriel looked disinterested and felt no need to answer unless they addressed him properly.

"I’ll give it another try," Shamash waved his hand and this time didn’t lose focus on Uriel until he regenerated again from scratch, the process almost too fast for them to perceive. "this is most interesting. It can be killed with one hit, but it doesn’t die... is Dana perhaps dead? That would explain this phenomenon."

"Lady death is safe and sound, she’s just resting in her dwelling." Tyche who was the one who took Uriel prisoner in the first place, reassured Shamash and at the same time unwittingly revealed something interesting to Uriel. freewebnoveℓ.com

"So it was you who betrayed Dana." He accused.

"Nonsense!" Tyche rebutted at the same time she flicked her fingers to destroy Uriel, her attempt failing just like the others.

"Then how could you possibly know she was sealed in her domain? I knew it was weird when I saw her scythe in your auction." Uriel huffed showing no signs of anger, just clarity.

Needless to say, Tyche didn’t particularly like being outed by Uriel. While betraying other gods was nothing unusual in the scale of thousands of years, if found out a war between gods would break out and of all the modern gods that derived from humans Dana was among the most dangerous.

"Don’t listen to him, get rid of that pest!" Tyche said as she doubled her efforts under the gaze of the other divinities.
