Ever since Nika met Uriel she had big expectations of him but, somehow, he had managed to always surpass them. At first he was nothing but a kid who didn’t have enough courage to look her in the eye, but he was way more respectful and considerate than any of her former employers.

Not just that, he also learned really fast and grew at an unparalleled speed to the point where she couldn’t recognize him as the same person anymore. Continue your saga on novelbuddy

While it was true that his attitude became a bit colder than it used to be, it could be seen as a sign of maturity and she was really excited to see how far he could get. By creating a company she ensured that, not matter what happens in the dungeon, their rights will be respected regardless of Uriel’s rank and by joining him, she would be able to accompany him all the way.

Both Nika and Uriel remained silent the rest of the short trip towards the west gate while pondering on the implications of being part of a company, but the driver remained silent for a whole different reason.

She listened to the full conversation Nika and Uriel had on the backseats and was now sweating buckets. The young student she thought was a piece of garbage who abandons other hunters in combat seemed to be a lot more powerful than she could ever imagine. Even someone as reputable as her new boss, Nika, was speaking respectfully to him and he was now the CEO of the company that hired her.

This meant that Uriel was her boss’ boss and that she was in deep trouble.

To say that her life now depended on the whims of anyone in the new company wouldn’t be an exaggeration and even though she didn’t know much about their current mission, she knew it was outside city walls. Something that, because of her previous position as a receptionist at the west branch of the Cryptid hunting agency, she knew was particularly dangerous now that cryptids were behaving strangely.

When they arrived at the gathering spot the place was filled with soldiers and hunters wearing the customary Mapple corporation longcoats and Uriel climbed down the vehicle and hurried to grab the package with the relic.

Nika was soon greeted by Ethan’s second in command, a lieutenant that wore leather gloves indicating that his trait was most likely related to his hands, and he informed them that they were ready to depart as soon as they delivered the relic, which Uriel did immediately and everyone went back to their vehicles.

As soon as the gates were opened, Uriel realized that most of the soldiers and hunters at the scene where there to keep the crowds from exiting the city and only a small caravan of vehicles was allowed to cross the tunnel. It also didn’t take long for him to notice how different things were compared to the last time he crossed the walls.

Although there were no cryptids on sight, there were several scorch marks that weren’t there before. The terrain also seemed much more uneven making following the road a difficult task. At some point, the vehicles seemingly took a turn to what Uriel deemed as a wrong way.

"Where are they heading?"

"To the rallying spot in one of the lost city’s outposts." Janett replied.

Uriel remembered being told something about outposts by both Miss Dragonfang and Professor Charlie, though he never visited one and didn’t know much about their purpose.

"Why do we need to go to an outpost anyway? Not that I’m complaining but it seems like a waste of time."

"You’ll see when we get there, boss." Nika replied.

The road was bumpier than usual, but they were riding a civil vehicle that put comfort over utility and the trip was actually enjoyable. That was, at least, until the sounds of heavy artillery being fired came out from the military ATVs ahead and a couple of beasts fell to the ground.

In these cases, hunters would usually slow down or even stop to pick up the orbs, but on this occasion they sped up. The reason for this was the unusually high number of beast rank cryptids loitering in the surroundings.

"Buckle up!" Janett shouted before trampling over the corps of a vanishing black dog, the most common type of cryptid in the barrenlands. In spite of the timely warning, Uriel bumped his head on the top of the vehicle, though it only hurt his pride.

Uriel turned to look over the window in the back to see what did they just ran over, only to find out the reason why no one had stopped before. All sorts of cryptids were running behind the vehicle in a frenzy.

Some were faster than others and it was clear that a single mistake on the driver’s end could spell their doom.

’If I get eaten, will I still be able to regenerate?" Uriel shivered at the memory of the changeling that attempted to do just that to him. The sheer amount of creatures following them was enough to scare even the veteran soldiers that kept firing the turret mounted on top of their ATV.

The poor woman was stiffly clinging to the wheel and her attention was solely focused on the road. At that moment she wished the vehicle didn’t have rear mirrors as, even though she was an ascended, she wasn’t accustomed to facing cryptids. After all, her trait wasn’t combat related which was the reason why she used to work as a receptionist at the agency.

At that moment, a particularly vicious quadruped beast with two pairs of extremely long horns was about to catch up to Uriel’s vehicle. The beast had muscles on top of its muscles and it moved impossibly fast for its size, much faster than the caravan. All the bullets fired at it bounced off its skin like it was nothing.

Uriel preemptively took the revolver from his trait, crossing his fingers not to be forced to open fire through the window but the beast was drawing near and soon its FOD would turn off their vehicle’s engine.

Just when all hope seemed to fade, the sight of a tall square watchtower was revealed at the distance and on top of it, a cowgirl in a leather bikini was firing what seemed to be an old looking rifle.

"Yehaaw!" Charlie shouted after taking down the beast with a single shot to the eye.
