Drawing Cards in the Middle Ages to Rise in Ranks-Chapter 376 - 63: Corner
The sky was dark.
The water in the drainage canal flowed swiftly.
Various shops lined the street.
This was evidently the architectural style of the steam era.
Losa saw many people with black umbrellas and rain boots, rushing by.
Most of them were dressed appropriately, wearing hats. Their clothes might be old and patched, but they still maintained a clean and tidy appearance.
Suddenly thrown into a strange world, a foreign city, Losa was a bit at a loss for a moment—he knew the most important thing right now was to meet up with his followers.
But in a densely populated city, finding specific individuals was indeed challenging.
He looked up and carefully examined the few tall buildings rising in the rain. The tallest of them was clearly the landmark building in Saluzzo; if everyone shared a tacit understanding, it should be the best meeting point.
The rain was getting heavier, and the sidewalks were crowded with people seeking shelter from the rain. Someone casually lit a match, lighting a cigarette under a shop's awning, and exhaled clouds of smoke.
This novel scene, so different from the Middle Ages, was somewhat mesmerizing to Losa.
Even if he couldn't complete the trial this time, it was worth it as a vacation.
He thought to himself.
A horse-drawn carriage sped past him, forcing him to retreat to the roadside, yet his pants were still splashed with water. Luckily, he hadn't brought an umbrella, so he was already thoroughly soaked.
The man on the carriage, wearing a fisherman's hat, opened his mouth wide, mocking Losa's predicament with his yellow teeth.
How he wished to punch him!
Losa clenched his fists. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
But the carriage had already moved far away.
Losa walked along the street toward the tall building.
His steps were swift, the icy rain hitting him, yet he didn't feel much cold.
But as he walked, he suddenly felt a piercing gaze behind him.
Losa didn't turn around impulsively. Instead, he "accidentally" stepped into a puddle, complaining as he squatted at the roadside steps, taking off his boots to empty the water inside.
Using this action as cover, he noticed from the corner of his eye a man holding a black umbrella, quietly following behind him.
The black umbrella covered most of the man's face. He didn't seem to be a tracking expert, openly trailing behind Losa. When Losa stopped, he also stopped, without any attempt at concealment.
Losa put his boots back on and quickened his pace, turning into a nearby alley.
No footstep sounds came from behind.
Losa continued down the alley without haste.
The alley's road conditions were worse, with some red bricks loose, making a sloshing sound when stepped on.
"Are you a friend of Chelina?"
A man in a gray suit, with the brim of his hat pulled low and holding a large black umbrella, appeared at the end of the alley.
Losa's expression was slightly startled: "Was it that bartender who informed you? Didn't he say he belonged to the Sassari Family?"
Sassari is a place name, located on Sardinia, separated from Piedmont by Corsica, which is Emperor Napoleon's hometown.
"Family doesn't distinguish among themselves."
The man said with a smile.
"Are all the people from Saluzzo so humorous?"
Losa treated it as a joke.
The man knew it was a joke too. If the Wolf Lord didn't tightly control the authority of the Wolf Race Council, the entire Wolf Race would have fought to the death over territorial disputes.
Even as it stands, the wolves frequently engage in private conflicts in fields like finance, contraband, and arms smuggling, but it never manifests openly; that would invite intervention and arbitration by the Wolf Lord and the Yakxi Family.
"Are you still not going to reveal your identity?"
Losa said calmly: "I've already told you."
"A friend of Chelina?"
Behind Losa, there was the sound of rain boots stepping into a puddle, and when he turned around, he saw another wolf-person with a similar colored hat appearing at the alley entrance.
He took off his hat but revealed a face indistinguishable from a human.
Regretfully he said, "Then you're really unlucky. Chelina is quite a good girl; many young men in the family are fond of her. You coming to save her at such a critical moment shows you're quite a good man."
After his words, the first appearing man raised a small, exquisite crossbow, aimed at Losa, and pulled the trigger.
The sound of the string releasing was almost inaudible, and a crossbow arrow cut through the air, producing a mournful whistling sound.
Whoosh—
A crimson blade abruptly appeared in Losa's hand, deflecting the incoming crossbow arrow with a snap. The hot sword met the rainwater, creating a mist.
The sound of splashing water echoed, and when the mist cleared, the wolf-person who first appeared had already been decapitated by Losa, his blood blending with the rain and flowing along the brick seams into the sewer.
The hat spun and fell to the ground, drifting away like a small boat, revealing the fallen man's unique appearance with two wolf ears.
Behind Losa, another wolf-person's body expanded, deformed, and his flesh rapidly proliferated, pushing his height from under 1.7 meters to almost 2 meters. His skin was covered with pitch-black fur.
Compared to Hans's werewolf transformation, this werewolf retained more human features; at least the face still faintly resembled his human form.
"Pure-blooded Wolf Race..."
Losa whispered, revealing that like Hans, this was a pure-blooded wolf capable of freely switching between wolf and human appearances—pure-blooded wolf lineage is not necessarily nobler than half-wolf race; it just has fewer human elements.
"I come from the Saluzzo Family."
The man said concisely.
"Are you his corner?"
Losa pointed the sword tip at the headless wolf corpse.
"I am a corner, but not his."
The man's expression didn't change much, as if Losa's display of strength meant nothing to him.
"Where is Chelina?"
The man's face had the same indifference as Chelina, though it wasn't without emotion, just well concealed: "You're about to die. What does knowing that matter?"
"Consider it as satisfying my curiosity before death."
The man hesitated for a moment before speaking sternly: "You should know that the Wolf Lord dispatched an Expedition Army to deal with those rule-breaking scoundrels and traitors who fled to the New Continent. Saluzzo cannot stay out of it."
"So Chelina is being attacked by assassins sent by your Saluzzo Family?"
The man shook his head: "No, with Miss's help, she has broken out from the family. Now, she's under attack by several Centurions under the Wolf Lord."
"Where are they now?"
The man fell silent, his beastly amber eyes in the rain appearing like lit lanterns.
"I don't know, but I know that with your strength, it's impossible to save her. So whether you go or not, it doesn't matter to the situation. You might as well die by my hand, and it will count as one of the evidences of our family's 'break' with the Basilicata Family."
In the next moment.
The werewolf's form had already penetrated the rain curtain, faster than the crossbow arrow, attacking Losa.
Clang—
The sword collided with claws, emitting the sound of metal clashing.
Losa had earlier fully activated Bloodfall; all attributes had greatly enhanced, yet he still felt his palm go numb from the shock.
