Chapter 123: Daisy Town Attacked

"Arghhh!"

A man was impaled through the abdomen and lifted into the air, screaming in agonizing pain. The one responsible was a humanoid figure with bony protrusions jutting out from its body. It wielded a long, sharp bone, grown from its own arm, as a weapon. With a swift motion, it threw the now-limp man off the tip of its bone, sending the body crashing to the ground. Its face bore two deep sockets glowing with red eyes, and it stood at about two meters tall.

Boom!

A thunderclap roared in the sky as heavy rain poured down.

"Roger!"

"No, Cain! He’s already gone, we have to get out of here!" one of the men shouted, grabbing Cain by the armpit and pulling him away. Their faces were pale with terror after watching their friend die so gruesomely.

"Come on, you two! What are you waiting for?!" another man shouted, wielding a sword in one hand and a shield in the other.

Cain stood up shakily, rubbing his eyes before unsheathing his sword. He then dashed off with the rest of the fleeing men.

Rain soaked their shirts and sloshed into their boots as they splashed through muddy puddles.

"Damn it! Damn it! What is happening here?!" Cain shouted in frustration.

He was one of the guards assigned here as part of a temporary rotation. It had only been three days since he arrived. And now, out of nowhere, just this evening, three massive yellow magical arrays had appeared in the sky, and with them came a horde of monsters.

At first, the guards managed to hold off the monsters as they tried to evacuate the townspeople. But over time, the portals that had appeared continued releasing more monsters until they simply couldn’t hold the line anymore. The ones they encountered just now, the bony, humanoid monsters, were the worst of them.

Nearly indestructible, their bones would regenerate after being shattered. Their movements were swift and disturbingly human-like, making them incredibly difficult for the guards to deal with.

So far, they had only managed to evacuate the people in the port district, as fewer citizens lived there. The housing district, however, still had many residents trapped. Cain’s current group of ten guards had been assigned to that district for evacuation, but they were ambushed along the way.

As they ran through the narrow streets of the residential district, suddenly, something in the sky caught their attention.

"Wha-what is that?" one of the men asked, pointing upward.

There were multiple flying shapes above, barely visible against the night sky. The darkness obscured what they were, until one of the creatures suddenly dove down and snatched the very man who had pointed.

"Help me! Help!" he screamed as he was lifted into the air.

Cain and the others grabbed onto him, trying to pull him back down.

Boom!

A bolt of lightning briefly lit up the street, and it was enough for them to see the horror above them.

It was a giant dragonfly.

Its size was about 3 meters long, with wings that stretched even farther, nearly 4 meters from tip to tip.

They were all stunned to see such a creature.

Without hesitation, Cain slashed at one of the giant dragonfly’s legs that had grabbed the man, cutting it off. The dragonfly screeched in pain. The other guards quickly followed, slashing at its other limbs. Their combined efforts weakened the creature’s grip. As its hold loosened, the guards tried to pull the man down.

But the dragonfly didn’t give up.

It lunged with its jaws and clamped down on the man’s torso, then shot up into the sky. The man’s screams echoed upward, slowly fading into the night.

They watched, helplessly, as other dragonflies began swarming around the one carrying the man, fighting over the body like animals over prey.

Thud!

Something dropped from the sky. Cain and the others turned toward the noise.

Boom!

They saw it. The man’s head,half-eaten, rolled to a stop.

Screams broke out. The guards turned and ran, bolting back the way they had come.

"Hey! Where are you going?" Cain shouted.

He stopped one of them, grabbing his shoulder.

"Hey! What are you thinking, deserting your duty?" he yelled, his voice barely heard through the roar of rain and thunder.

"Are you blind?! This thing is beyond us! We’re just walking into death if we keep going!" the man shouted back, shaking Cain off and joining the others in retreat.

Only Cain remained, alone, while the others abandoned their duty to save their own lives.

He then looked forward, then the other road where all his men had fled. He was torn between two choice, saving his own life... or saving innocent people.

He had only lived in this town for three days, but he had already fallen in love with it. The landscape, the fresh food, and most of all, the kind, friendly people. This place had quickly become dear to him.

And so, he made his choice.

He dashed forward, determined to save whatever he could... even if it was just a little.

---

On top of one of the roofs at the center of the district region in Daisy Town, more than ten robed figures stood silently.

They watched as the town was overrun and destroyed by monsters.

One of them wore a white mask.

"...Now, who will come to save all of you?"

---

In the throne room... silence fell heavy.

The news just delivered to the king was the worst among all he had heard today.

Daisy Town was attacked.

The mayor of Daisy Town, a middle-aged man with white hair and a medium build, was kneeling before him. He wore a blue formal suit resembling that of a nobleman. His hands trembled as he continuously wiped his forehead with a handkerchief. His face was clearly filled with fear and worry.

"Three magical arrays appeared at the same time? That means... at least three Kaosliths. This might be the worst attack we’ve ever faced," Edward said gravely.

"Father! There’s no time to waste, we need to move now!" Prince Reymond exclaimed. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

"Yes, the longer we wait, the more lives will be lost," Kelar added, his voice full of concern as he covered his mouth with one hand, as though distraught.

But deep inside... he was thrilled.

It worked.

The three specimens he had ordered Azul to deploy in Daisy Town had succeeded, even though they were still incomplete
