Don: The Blood Chains-Chapter 39: Debt.
Chapter 39: Debt.
"It’s all done." One of the guards spoke as they put the gold bars and money into their backpack.
"It’s sad... who knows how much money is there." Pablo spoke as he looked at the trees, but they needed to get out fast, because the shots were too loud, and second, Linda escaped, and the possibility that somebody would come, let it be police or agents, was too high.
"Don’t worry, I have a man in my mind who has a great debt toward me." Joseph spoke. "So we are going to pay a visit to him."
"Great debt?"
"Yeah, one of my father’s accountants... he was stealing a lot of money, but my father did nothing about it because he held too much power, too many secrets and connections." He looked at him. "But now I am ready to collect back the money."
Something again was different about him... which just confused Pablo even more because he remembered what he said when they went to save him... he wanted to die or at least that’s what he said and was implying, but now he just seemed ready to take back whatever remained of the Cassian family... or more like he was ready to punish those who sent him to prison, all of them who had their hands in it and were still enjoying the benefits of the Cassian family.
The countless money they stole, the connections they made through the family, through his father... he was ready to grab everything from them... and it just excited Pablo even more.
On the other hand, Joseph already accepted the fact that it is what it is... he needed to be a Don, he needed to be exactly who people thought he was. There was no escape from this life and even life... wanted him to be this man... a man who shoots at somebody without any remorse, morality, or feeling in him... and even when he misses all the shots it excites him even more... the thoughts of what is going to happen next? What will be the consequence of this?
Maybe I am... crazy, but this feeling is great... not giving a fuck about anything, how good is it. He thought as he genuinely smiled as he looked up at the sky once again, and with that, they were on the go to find their way out of the forest.
It was something that wasn’t really hard because they went toward the direction that Joseph said and remembered basically, and because the forest itself wasn’t dense, just trees in straight lines, it was easy to find the road that connected to the entrance of the park, but to their surprise, there was nothing.
No sirens, no helicopters, no roadblocks, everything seemed calm and chill, there were even hikers, families, going up on the road not even knowing what happened and it was thanks to Linda and the sheer adrenaline and understanding of the situation in her.
She just ran and ran, not even knowing where exactly she was going, but ended up on one of the trails and from there... she just walked back calmly to her post into the car and drove away. She felt like it was a sign from her guardian angel, that not even one bullet hit her, that it was her time to escape and never look back, she had enough money now in her hands with the gold, and she did exactly that, leaving behind in that forest everything she believed in.
While on the other side... it was the beginning of what Joseph himself believed in and the men around them... that they are here for the change, for the second coming of the Cassian family.
"So where are we going now?" Pablo asked Joseph as they were already sitting in the cars, leaving behind the treasure hunt quest with some kind of disappointment that the hundreds of millions were only about thirty million.
"I don’t know."
"Don’t know?" Pablo asked as he looked at him.
"Well, it was ten years ago, more than ten years, but he is called Trevor Hibeer, maybe there is a—"
"Hibeer?" Pablo asked back in surprise, interrupting him, which Joseph nodded to. "He’s one of the biggest real estate moguls, I mean his name is all over the city and the suburbs." He said, shaking his head. "Like hotels, apartments, houses, he does a lot, but I had no idea nor any information that he was your father’s accountant."
Mogul, huh... he stole enough to start a new life and with the connections he cleared himself...
"Then let’s pay a visit to him, he probably has a headquarters or something."
"Yeah, he indeed has one in the city center... but there’s too many cameras and eyes."
Joseph just looked at Pablo with his tired eyes and calmly said. "We just walk in."
Well, the plan was simple, at least judging by what Joseph just said it was clear, they park down and then just straight walk into one of the richest real estate mogul’s headquarters and have a talk with him... or more than a talk, which in Pablo’s head just sounded like more danger.
Like, he was excited about it all but it’s not a forest, and judging by the fact that he shot at Linda, he didn’t even know what to expect or what Joseph would do with Trevor in the middle of the city, in a twenty storey big office with hundreds of people in it... close to the police station.
But well, it was sure they were not going to hide in the shadows but more like introduce themselves properly, or more like walk into a trap... though they did it anyway and almost an hour went by when they arrived at the exact location of the so-called headquarters.
And that was the first time Joseph saw how big Trevor really was, like that building was tall and kind of futuristic looking with his name on it, Hibeer Estates.
"So how do we do it?" Pablo asked as he already had in his hand a submachine gun.
"This is not a heist, we walk in, ask where he is, and go up to him." Joseph answered, chuckling a bit because Pablo’s approach was more like a suicide mission than what he wanted to do. "So, to not get too much attention, you, me, and one more guy, the others wait here if something happens." He said, and with it he stepped out of the car, followed by Pablo and one more guard.
And again, it was something else because they were still in hiking clothes, the guard still had the jacket and the submachine gun under it and of course one more small detail... Joseph’s face was all over the news... so the moment they walked through the revolving doors, they were already in the center of attention.
Like a half-blind, tall, slightly limping, middle-aged man walking in wearing hiking clothes, on his side a smaller guy who looked skinny and like a zombie, and on the other side a gorilla-sized man in a jacket with something obviously under it.
It was clear that something was going to happen, as the whole lobby just froze and the exact moment Joseph got closer to the counter, they recognized him immediately... that powerless, zombie-looking guy... Joseph Cassian.
"Hello, miss. Can I talk with Mister Hibeer?" He asked as he tried to put on a warm smile, but it was anything but warm, more like the same maniac one.
Meanwhile, his men turned around, eyeing the security guard of the building whose hands were already resting on their pistols, but none dared to move because, well... that gorilla looked ready to shoot at them, his hand hidden under his jacket.
"Uh... can I... can I ask what—"
"A business meeting." Joseph interrupted her because she was visibly stunned and couldn’t even get her words out properly.
"Mister Hibeer is currently holding a meeting." Another woman said from the side. She was more composed.
"Can I join him? I’ve been his business partner of his, long time now." He said, still with that smile on his face and that’s when the woman made a critical mistake.
It wasn’t a secret, not to them, not to almost anybody, what Trevor did. There was even a big trial for him too, but due to lack of evidence, he never served any time. It was clear he had a prominent role during the Cassian family trial after their deaths, the so-called accountant of the family.
And her mistake exactly came from her connecting all the dots... remembering who Trevor was, who he worked for... so it wasn’t the stupidest thought that maybe they did have something together.
"I’ll inform him." She said and picked up the phone.
Meanwhile, Joseph just stood there, already thinking about his next steps. If they said no, then he would just push harder and walk up on his own.
"He’s waiting for you." She said, putting the phone back down. "20th floor, the elevator is right there." She pointed toward it, and to his surprise, they actually agreed.
"Thanks, lady. Have a beautiful day." Joseph said and that was it.
They simply walked into the elevator where light jazz music was playing while they went up the floors.
"Do you have a silencer?" Joseph asked as he looked at the guard next to him.
"Suppressor?" the guard asked back, to which Joseph nodded. "Yes, I have." He replied, pulling out a submachine gun that was fully kitted... laser, flashlight, suppressor, red dot sight, and a drum mag.
"Good... when that door opens, shoot everybody except Trevor."
