Chapter 780: 779 is not goodbye

Li Wei quietly gazed at that pale face and finally rediscovered inner peace, able to face everything before him calmly.

“…but Annie, you are wrong,” he said.

“You are a wonderful being, who should not and will not be easily forgotten.”

“It’s been an honor to know you, and I hope you don’t mind if I call myself a friend. In the future, I look forward to bragging about it: ‘Hey, do you know Annie Galas? She’s an amazing girl.'”

“Please, allow me this moment of pride.”

“However, I won’t stand still; I won’t stay wrapped in sadness and refuse to move forward. Life must go on, and dreams are still waiting to be fulfilled, right?”

“Hey, don’t forget, we’re still giving it our all to defend our title.”

He would continue to strive, continue to fight, and continue to step onto the field to face setbacks and challenges, launching attack after attack with all his might—

Refusing to surrender, refusing to give up.

And, refusing to stop.

This time, however, things were slightly different; he would fight not only for himself but also carry Annie’s dreams, battling alongside her.

Taking a deep breath, Li Wei stood up and took one more glance at Annie, preparing to leave.

Suddenly, a voice called out from outside the window—

“Li Wei.”

“Li Wei!”

Li Wei hurried to the windowsill, violently pushed open the window, and a piercing cold wind hit him in the face, almost blinding him as chill bumps wildly appeared all over his body.

Taking a deep breath and barely managing to open his eyes, Li Wei could see in the small garden behind, Annie dressed in a number 23 red jersey, holding a football, and waving her arms at him with a bright, radiant smile.

“Li Wei, come down quick, I’m still waiting to see you run for a touchdown,” she said.

Li Wei paused.

His voice stuck in his throat, his mind dazed, not knowing how to respond.

“Haha.”

Annie’s joyous, clear laughter echoed through the air, and she waved her hand to show she didn’t mind.

“I’ll take the field first, you hurry up.”

Without stopping, she turned and ran with full energy.

She sprinted, then sprinted again, running vigorously, faster and faster.

In a blink, she had disappeared from sight.

Li Wei’s gaze only managed to catch a glimpse of her, and subconsciously, his upper body leaned out of the window.

“Annie!”

Unexpectedly, a gust of wind surged, striking him squarely and forcibly pushing him back as his thoughts and soul were stuffed back into his body, leaving him breathless.

Looking out the window again, there was no one there, only a vague night sky, the boundless night appearing vacant and lonely.

However, his heart was still pounding, a roaring sound filled his ears.

His knees trembled slightly, feeling somewhat weak.

Li Wei turned around, leaned against the windowsill, and looked at the still silent Annie, feeling his heart slowly return to his chest, his mixed emotions spreading on his tongue.

Finally, he realized it was over, truly.

Then,

Li Wei returned to Annie’s bedside, carefully examining her features, trying to engrave her face into his memory with his eyes.

Beneath those pale cheeks, the blue veins seemed to be slowly draining life from deep within her soul, scattering little by little into the air; but between her brows, a stubborn resilience lingered as if she were loudly laughing, mocking death standing before her.

“Don’t worry, no one can stop me.”

“Remember? ‘You’ll never walk alone.’ Someone has always fought alongside me, and you will witness this journey with me, right? So, I won’t stop, not ever.”

Then.

Bending over, Li Wei gently kissed Annie’s forehead.

“Good night, Annie Galas.”

Not goodbye.

Because Li Wei knew that Annie would continue to fight alongside them.

Lifting his head, Li Wei could see Mahomes and Kelsey standing at the door.

Mahomes turned his head awkwardly, staring at the wall to the side, daring only to glance at the room through the corner of his eye.

Kelsey stood at the door with a complex expression, her body visibly stiff, lacking the courage to cross the threshold, still lacking a bit of bravery.

Noticing Li Wei approaching, Kelsey lifted her gaze, took a deep breath, stepped forward past Mahomes, and walked briskly into the room toward Annie.

Mahomes quickly glanced at Kelsey, then averted his gaze again.

Li Wei walked up to him, gently patted Mahomes on the shoulder, and said in a low voice, “It’s Annie. Just like before.”

Mahomes hesitated as he looked at Li Wei.

Li Wei gave Mahomes an encouraging look, then took a step forward.

At the door, Jeff still faced the wall, caught in an agony he could not escape.

Though still hesitant, though his words still lacked strength, Li Wei had now found his strength and calmly looked at Jeff.

“Jeff, this is not your fault.”

Jeff trembled slightly, his whole body stiffening, his muscles from neck to arms completely taut. His face was unseen, yet it seemed as if his expression was visible.

Li Wei gazed deeply for a moment at Jenna, who appeared soulless and stunned, ultimately choosing not to say more, but simply murmured.

“Thank you.”

Thank you to Jenna for still being willing to notify him amidst her grief, and thank you for letting him, an outsider, say goodbye to Annie, because he knew how difficult and agonizing this moment was for Mr. and Mrs. Galas.

Then, Li Wei took a step, no longer able to stay here any longer, where there was no air, suffocating.

Jenna, baffled, raised her head and watched as Li Wei walked away confidently, holding her breath:

She seemed to see Annie, wearing a number twenty-three red football jersey, her hair neatly tied in a high ponytail, running wildly down the hospital corridor, her bell-like laughter reverberating continuously as she turned and shouted at Li Wei, “He’s here, he’s there, he’s everywhere, he’s the Edgerunner, Li Wei, Li Wei, Li Wei.”

Again and again.

Life’s vibrancy surged in the song, no longer restrained, free from sickness, Annie could finally run freely and joyously in the sunlight.

Jenna froze, staring blankly down the corridor, murmuring softly, “Annie…”

Her vision blurred, Jenna watched the figure of Li Wei, as time seemed to pause, quietly, just quietly watching the figure grow further and further away.

Jeff noticed the sounds and turned around, “Jenna?”

Jenna instinctively looked at Jeff, “Annie, Annie is there.”

Jeff followed Jenna’s gaze, but saw nothing, his heart wrenching. He took a deep breath, sat down beside Jenna, and pulled her tightly into his arms, squeezing hard, as if exerting all his strength and energy.

Li Wei continued walking without stopping, hurrying along, almost fleeing from the hospital room toward the parking lot, preparing to wait in the car for Kelsey and Mahomes.

The night deepened.

The whole city seemed peaceful and serene, with cars passing, people still talking, the dim street lights holding up the night sky, displaying the cityscape.

Though someone’s life had pressed the pause button, forever set in tonight, forever fixed at age eleven, not even having a chance to feel the tumultuous waves of adolescence, yet ending prematurely; but countless other lives continued, bustling for family, for dreams, striving to live.

“…Who, who is that?”
