Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Sister-in-law

Tristan Grayson’s words were a sharp sword, stabbing viciously and relentlessly into Mika Summers’s heart.

She hadn’t forgotten that she had once been Tristan Grayson’s wife, in name only.

But now, what were they? Aside from a paper agreement, they had no relationship at all.

Tears streamed down her face, no longer under her control. "I haven’t forgotten. We were, once. But now..."

"We still are!" Tristan Grayson knew what she was about to say and hastily cut her off.

’Whether it was the past, the present, or the future, she would always be his wife—Tristan Grayson’s wife—even if only in name.’

’That’s why he would never allow her to get close to another man, much less give her the chance to do something that would wrong him.’

Cassian Jennings stared at the two of them in utter shock.

Especially when Tristan said that... even Cassian, who had grown up with him, was taken aback. This was the first time he’d ever seen Tristan this furious.

’He was shocked by the woman’s identity, but he was more concerned for her safety. Arguing with Tristan Grayson? Wasn’t that a death wish?’

So, ignoring the thunderous look on Tristan’s face, he quickly stepped forward and grabbed his arm. "Tristan, the guys haven’t seen you in ages. Come on, let’s go grab a drink."

Tristan Grayson naturally understood Cassian’s intentions. So, this time, instead of disrespectfully storming off like he usually would, he let Cassian step in and defuse the tension.

Cassian Jennings dragged Tristan Grayson a few steps before stopping. He looked back at Mika Summers, gave her a roguish grin, and said, "Hey, don’t want to leave the missus out! Come on, join us!"

"It’s ’sister-in-law’!" Tristan’s face darkened at the term, and he didn’t hesitate to kick Cassian.

Cassian, despite being kicked, didn’t get angry. Instead, he rubbed his head awkwardly and said with a placating smile, "Oh, right, right, right! Sister-in-law, my bad. Tristan, you’re really embarrassing me. How can you treat me like this in front of our sister-in-law?"

"You were asking for it!"

"Right, I was asking for it. Let’s go! Come on, sister-in-law!" With that, Cassian reached out to take Mika’s arm and bring her along.

’Tristan was actually giving him an out for once; he had to make sure he smoothed things over with this woman.’

However, before his hand could even touch Mika, Tristan snatched her away. Cassian rubbed his nose in embarrassment and followed after them.

Tristan Grayson dragged Mika toward the VIP suite they always used.

Mika’s tears stopped at that moment. She bit her lip, her gaze on Tristan complex.

’Suddenly, she felt like she couldn’t figure Tristan out at all.’

’Hadn’t he always acted like he wanted to hide her away in his pocket, keeping her from everyone’s sight and knowledge?’

’But now he was insisting that man call her sister-in-law, and he was taking her to meet his friends?’

In that moment, Mika completely forgot that just seconds before, she had been in a furious argument with Tristan, hating his guts.

As he pushed the door open, Tristan suddenly pulled her into his arms, his hand settling naturally around her waist.

Thrown suddenly into his embrace, her first panicked instinct was to push him away, but the arm around her waist held her fast, not allowing her to move an inch.

A deep blush spread across her cheeks, and her heart began to pound erratically.

Tristan glanced down and saw her flushed face, and the corners of his mouth lifted in a small smile. But the smile only lasted a moment. He then noticed the tearstains on her cheeks, and the good mood he’d just found vanished, sinking once more.
