Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Love Him

"Tristan, I knew it... I knew you wouldn’t want me... I knew this day would come sooner or later..." Maggie had barely finished speaking when her terrified voice cried out again. "AHH—Don’t touch me! Tristan, come save me! Save me!"

Tristan Grayson’s mind reeled, and he felt himself on the verge of a breakdown. "Maggie, what’s wrong? Don’t scare me!"

"Tristan... if you don’t come right now... you might never see me again..."

"Don’t, Maggie. Don’t do anything stupid. I’m coming to find you right now. You’ll see me very soon." After speaking, he sprinted toward the elevators.

「By the time Tristan Grayson arrived at Maggie’s side, it was already the following evening.」

Inside the hospital room, Maggie lay on the bed, her face a deathly, unsettling white. She clutched her phone tightly in one hand, her eyes vacant and lifeless.

Seeing Maggie like this, Tristan felt his heart clench painfully. ’Maggie can’t survive without me. But that other woman... she can live on just fine, maybe even better.’

’That woman has a good brother. She doesn’t need me at all.’

’But Maggie’s different. She has no one but me...’ 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

A faint smile touched the woman’s pale face. "Tristan, you came..." As she spoke, tears streamed uncontrollably down her cheeks.

"Maggie... I’m sorry..." ’I’m sorry,’ he thought. ’I couldn’t resist temptation. I always believed my love for Maggie was unshakable, that nothing could ever sway it. But I was wrong. She was only gone for a few days, and I already have a child with another woman.’

"Tristan, as long as you still want me... everything is worth it..." The woman struggled to sit up in bed.

"Don’t move..." Alarmed, Tristan rushed over to steady her.

Maggie turned and threw her arms tightly around his waist. "I missed you so much... I really, really missed you... Tristan, please, I’m begging you, don’t abandon me again..."

"I won’t. Not ever again. I swear, this is the last time."

Maggie finally revealed a satisfied smile. "Tristan..."

"Mm..." Tristan Grayson’s brow was tightly furrowed as he looked down at the woman in his arms.

"I love you... I love you so much... I really, truly love you..." Maggie murmured, gazing at him with deep affection.

"..." Her words sent a violent tremor through Tristan Grayson’s entire body, and his heart leaped with shock. In all these years, it was the first time Maggie had ever confessed her feelings to him.

But beyond his surprise, what he felt more than anything was bitterness... and fear.

’If this had happened just a few days ago, he might have been overjoyed. But now, there was no joy at all, only a faint, creeping sense of fear...’

’Why am I feeling this way?’

’I’m afraid of Maggie loving me...’

Maggie had expected Tristan to say it back. She waited for a long, long time, but no response came. Just as she was about to ask him why, he suddenly pushed her away.

Tristan Grayson avoided Maggie’s gaze. He cleared his throat, coughed a couple of times, and said in a low, heavy voice, "It’s getting late. You should get some rest." He helped Maggie lie back down, intending to step outside for some fresh air.

Seeing Tristan about to leave, Maggie shot her hand out and grabbed his. "Tristan... don’t leave me..."

"Okay... I won’t leave..." Tristan Grayson couldn’t bear to abandon her. He forced a weak smile and nodded.

"Don’t ever leave me..."

"Mm, I’ll never leave."

Maggie smiled, satisfied, then said in her usual tone, "Tristan, remember to wake me up at eight tomorrow morning!"

For years, this was what Maggie had said to Tristan every night before she went to sleep. He had once asked her why she didn’t sleep in, why she always had to be up at eight. Maggie told him it was because she was scared... scared that if she fell asleep, she might never wake up again.
