Chapter 5 - Slum Rat

"No entry! Get the hell out of here."

"Slum rat."

Ark's hands balled up into a fist.

'Slum rat?'

Long before the apocalypse began there was already a sort of segregation in the city. It was not just the regular rich discriminating against the poor kind of situation, no, it was far worse.

The slums as people called it was the poorer part of town where those who earned far below minimum wage lived.

Ark was not so biased as to not be able to tell why people would hate him, the slums was a terrible place where all sorts of crime were perpetrated.

Murder, drugs, armed robbery... the worse types of crimes could be attributed to those who stayed in the slums.

Due to this, there had been a movement that just urged the government to nuke that part of town and be done with it.

They often forget that the children born in the slums had no choice in the matter, and those relegated to the slums after their parents crash couldn't vote against it.

He was a victim of circumstance.

Not everyone in the slums was a dirty criminal and yet they would be treated as one no matter where they went.

'This is my chance to change things.'

He wasn't going to let this opportunity slip by his hands.

Ark walked forward, a dark look in his eyes.

"Let me—"

His words were cut off when a heavy fist rocked his face, throwing him to the floor. The guards then snickered amongst themselves.

"You wanna die kid?" Said guard A.

"You think we would ever let a slum rat like you take the trial? Go shit somewhere else."

Ark got to his feet on shaky legs, as much he wouldn't like to admit it that punch... it was something.

Maybe it was due to his malnourished build, or maybe it was because he had not eaten for the past three days but his vision became blurry for just a second.

"Are you guys dumb?... You don't need to come to the Center to take the trial."

The trial was not something the government could control. Wherever you were, it would happen whether you liked it or not.

But the government had made it illegal to not register and undertake your awakening in the Wielder's Center.

That was why children from high class families were here. Ark too was here for the same reason, as well as a tiny little ulterior motive... the food.

"Get out of my way, imbeciles."

Now they were angry...

"You little shit."

Guard A seemed the most offended. He lifted his baton high up into the air ready to strike down on Ark with a high degree of unnecessary force.

Meanwhile Ark tensed, rearing his fist backwards.

People always said he was strong... Maybe it was time he put that strength to good use.

Everything was about to spiral into madness when a cold voice froze them in place.

"Stop."

The voice came with a high degree of authority, it was as though the person was certain that they would heed her call.

Ark looked behind the guard, his fist still up to check who had spoken.

It was the girl from earlier.

The guards quickly rightened themselves.

"Miss... I em... I didn't know you were still—"

A single finger silenced them.

Then she pointed that finger at Ark and gestured forward.

Ark walked into the room unperturbed by the guards, all they could do was throw death stares at him.

He soon walked up to the girl and they both began walking deeper into the center.

'Why was she here though?'Ark wondered as he stole a glance at her.

The time it took for him to get to the guard was enough for her to have gone far from the entrance.

'Did she somehow know the guards would not let me in?'

Ark briefly remembered how she had stared at him with disdain, he felt she hated him at that moment and yet here she was helping him.

'Maybe I'm overthinking things.'

"Thank you."

The girl simply nodded and walked away from him, heading through the large double doors first.

Ark meanwhile stopped right in front of the large glass double doors. He observed his reflection in the mirror.

Rough black wavy hair that had refused to bend even after hours of combing, golden eyes that was by far the most redeemable quality he had and an emaciated figure.

'I'm definitely going to stick out.'

It was not like Ark hated attention, it was just that he didn't like the wrong type of attention and that was all he would be getting today.

He glanced at the little black mark underneath his left eye. Thankfully it was still very much intact.

A cold feeling then settled in the pit of his stomach. Surprisingly, he was a little worried about his dad...

But there was nothing he could do about it. Both he and the creature were gone.

He walked into the room and right into the gathering of eighteen year olds.

The hall was bustling with activity and noise but before heading deeper, he walked over to the reception desk and registered his name.

The hall was packed with hundreds of teenagers, each waiting for their briefing. He could no longer spot the girl from earlier so instead walked deeper into the crowd.

Their reaction was instantaneous.

The chattering groups suddenly stopped speaking, the area around him was quiet. That was when a single voice spoke out.

"What the hell is he doing here?"

Ark could not discern where the voice had come from but soon enough the blue haired boy from earlier walked up to him with a look that promised trouble.

He had a large figure and although Ark considered himself pretty tall he was still noticeably smaller than him.

'It's best I avoid trouble.'

Ark wanted everything to go smoothly. He needed to secure his future within the few days he had here, there was no time to get into fights.

But just as he was about to go the boy held onto his shoulder.

"Where are you off too? I was just about to introduce myself."

The students around him snickered.

"Don't touch him, you might just get slum all over your hands," a girl said before laughing hysterically.

Ark simply ignored her, he held the boy's hand and pried it off his shoulders with ease.

The boy looked rather surprised.

"You little—"
