Chapter 28 - Devil’s Gift

After several more activities, which included a thorough explanation of the archive, documenting each of their classes as well as handing them brand new identity cards, they were allowed to return to their room shortly before dinner.

Ark sat on his bed, and then laid down on his back, facing the ceiling.

"I really did it..."

It was one thing to fantasize about your future and another thing to accomplish your goals.

Still, he was far from where he wanted to be. This was just merely the beginning!

He sat up straight and then tried to summon the archive. The day's formalities had been so hectic that he had not even gotten the chance to explore the console.

Ark still had no idea what his curse was plus there were still a lot of things he didn't know about it.

Like for example why was it called the god-console instead of Archive like everyone else?

Why was it gold instead of blue?

And what did it mean by error?! He could still remember that particular ominous line.

"Archive."

Nothing happened.

"Oh yeah, console."

A golden screen appeared in front of him.

The more Ark read, the wider his eyes became, up till the point where his eyes could no longer gain any diameter.

'What is this?'

If what he was reading was right...

"I can use all classes?!"

Ark immediately hushed himself when he remembered that anyone could be just outside his door.

Throughout the last six years, a curse bearer able to use even just two classes was unheard of, talkless on one able to use all!

'This makes no sense...'

Actually, nothing had been making sense from the moment the trial started. First of all, he shared a trial with another person, after which he experienced something he couldn't quite remember.

His archive seemed to have a god-complex considering that it called itself then god-Console and won't answer to anything but god-Console or the abbreviated version.

And now this...

Access to all classes.

Even his curse was strange, what did they mean by forms? Did it mean it had multiple stages? The entire thing was confusing.

And then finally the last and most confusing part of the entire thing was the last part.

[Blight: Soul Taint]

"I have no idea what that means!"

Ark continued to stare at it for some time and then he tried something.

He tapped the words on the screen. Immediately he did, another tab popped open.

[Description:

Power hidden in earthly glass, strength placed upon a sinful mass.

Unable to contain the power of your curse, your souls will constantly erode over time.

Type: Passive]

"What the hell?"

***

Ark entered the cafeteria with a lot on his mind. Over the last couple of minutes up until dinner time he had been thinking of one particular thing...

His blight.

There was an old saying Ark always heard back in the slums.

The devil gives with one hand, and takes with the other...

He had finally become a curse bearer only to discover that he was going to die at some point. Soul erosion, a blight that ate into the host's soul up until there was nothing but a hollow husk left.

'Why?'

Why was he cursed with bad luck? His entire life was a mess as it is, this was finally his chance to live life.

Ark didn't want much, good food plus shelter and he would be okay. Why then couldn't he even have just that?

He got an impossible power only for it to be wrapped up in a nice little death package.

"Damn it."

"Excuse me?" The serving woman cocked a brow as she watched Ark.

"Oh sorry, I was talking to myself."

The woman watched him for a little longer.

"Are you alright? You look down."

"I'm fine," Ark said with a little annoyance as he grabbed the tray from the counter and walked away.

Seated on her usual seat, Kiera watched as Ark stormed past her, not even sparing her a glance as he walked towards the more secluded parts of the hall.

On his way, one of Ethan's hoodlums stuck out his leg causing him to trip, his bowl of porridge staining the floor as well as his clothes.

Kiera's gaze hardened, as canopy of laughter spread through the hall.

The boy was laughing, watching Ark on the floor but the laughter caught in his throat as soon as Ark rose to his feet.

It was the first time Kiera was seeing him this way, Ark was angry. His face was a terrifying mix of anger and— grief.

'What happened?'

Before the boy could say anything a scream tore through his throat as Ark stomped right on his leg, the force of the blow twisting the ankle in an awkward angle.

Kiera was already on her feet ready to intervene when Ark had retaliated.

The entire cafe that was once fraught with laughter was now eerily silent, Ark's golden eyes gleaming with malice.

And then he gave them one more glance, his hands twitching as though he was about to summon his artifact, but in the last moments, he decided against it and stormed out of the cafeteria.

Only then did Kiera finally breathe.

*

Ark left the cafeteria angry as well as on an empty stomach. He did not look back, even as he heard the screams of the boy he had dismantled he did not stop.

There was a limit to how much shit one could take, and right now his shit meter was full.

Ark kept waking his eyes forward and his hands twitching at his side, all he could think about was the blight. That, coupled with the constant shade being thrown at him he was furious.

And with that burning anger, he walked right out of the wielder's center and into the storm, leaving the center as well as his hope for the future behind.
