District 42-Chapter 368: Preparing to invade
Casper looked towards the huge figure of the imposing Castle.
’Coming to think about it, it’s been a long time since I don’t look at it from afar. The last time when I really took a good look at it was on my first day here... After this, so many things happened, and I have been avoiding staring directly at this structure since we got basically kicked out from there. But now is different.’
He glanced at the white shield on his right arm. For some reason, the way it shone under the sunlight was something very soothing. He was not feeling anxious, nor apprehensive. Maybe that was an effect that the shield should have, or he just had that impression because it was a gift that Vick gave to him.
Either way, having that treasure with him made him feel safer and stronger.
In his left hand was... something that he could retrieve back after a long time.
Somehow, they managed to find his combat knife after the Midwest battle. It had a different design than any other weapon of District 42, and it was quite primitive. They took it to the laboratory and analyzed the knife to see if there was something different with it. Apparently, that wasn’t the case, so they just decided to modify it, always maintaining the previous design.
Amelia ended up finding this knife and, by its strange looks, she connected it with Casper, who was the most strange person that she ever knew before.
Sometimes, Casper himself thought that Amelia already knew that he was from another world, but he never entered into that subject.
The soldier took his old knife, which now had changed a bit its looks. At first sight, you would only see the usual grip of a Buck 119 Special. However, after pressing a button, a blade of the same design as a Buck appeared, but it shone in bright blue color.
’To think that they would change it to a laser blade... But they surely did a good job preserving the old design. This knife meant life for me. After all, I used it in my very first mission in the Yanke Forces, and it was this very mission that began my legacy of One mission, zero casualties.’
Anyways, the knife was in his hands again. It gave him a lot of nostalgia. It made him remember Sionnach.
’It’s been a while since I don’t think about her, and about a lot of things that happened back in my first days here in the District... What bad timing to get nostalgic... I don’t blame myself, whatsoever. Before, the Frelsis were the ones trying to enter the Castle, now we are the ones going to do it. It’s like another Midwest battle unfolding.’
The soldier looked back to the other troops. They were prepared.
MMA was beside him, also checking on those troops.
They were all mobilized in the Main Avenue of the Midwest region. But they wouldn’t march across that avenue just like the Frelsis did. They would be more assertive.
Canute and Ari approached. They were way better-looking than in their days of rehabilitation. Both had excitement in their eyes. They were confident on the outcoming of that battle, particularly with everything that they have been doing until then to prepare for the invasion.
"I have all the explosives activated in the right spots. I re-did all the calculations, and everything is matching the expectations even with the numerous troublesome variables that might appear," Ari said to MMA.
"Same here. I compared the coordinates of Ari’s explosives and adjusted the position of the teleportations. I am pretty sure that we can get everyone inside there while the first explosions happen, so we will have good timing to start attacking them."
Canute finally could pull through the difficulties that he found in the way and created a device capable of teleporting without the need for any other aid equipment, which was the case of the teleporting pads.
"Casper, what do you think? I have my own opinion about this situation, though," MMA asked.
The soldier looked back at him. He was kind of aloof, but he knew about the entire plan better than anyone else, so there was no need for him to pay attention to that conversation for now.
"It’s okay for me. The sooner, the better. We need to get going if we want to do it on time. I am pretty sure that those Frelsis already know that we are going to attack. I doubt that they would lose the opportunity to prepare something to crash us again..."
The soldier wanted to pay attention to any other thing around, maybe help to settle down the troops, but he was too agitated.
He couldn’t stop thinking about what Camilla and the Vanirs were doing...
...
"So... They are coming in? I didn’t think that Casper would have such a decision, even though he seem to be courageous himself. Anyway, I thought that we had crushed the morale of their troops, so it was meant to be impossible for them to react," Camilla said.
She was sitting in a chair, in front of the King and Queen of District 42. Both of them had tired looks but didn’t say anything. In their eyes, a glint of confidence, but nobody could ever know what they were thinking about.
The Frelsi who reported that news to them got a bit insecure about talking with Camilla, who not long ago was the Rat. Even though the mask fell during their invasion, they were still wary of her. Not only because she was the daughter of Javir, but she showed to be much more cunning and strong than anyone could ever imagine.
"Y-Yes, Ms. Camilla. They are coming again. Their troops are way more reduced than before, but there are more than we supposed. There is just one Aesir missing as well..."
"Brenna, right? That woman is more mature than she looks. She is holding one of the Vanirs until now. We don’t know when their battle will end, but they seem to be battling for eternity there," Camilla seemed kind of... disappointed. She wasn’t expecting that the consequences of their actions would be so troublesome.
