District 42-Chapter 256: Bad omen
The Cloned Aesir finally finished his previous preparations. Now that Brenna wasn’t bothering him anymore, he could do things more smoothly. Her constant calls were making him go crazy and delaying his work.
’She was the most serious about our lack of time here, but still, she keeps calling me and making me waste my precious time of preparation. If the enemies had appeared some minutes ago, I would be taken by surprise. Damn...’
Stopping to think for a while and looking at her perspective, though, it was reasonable that she was worried about Casper. The man was the perfectionist, after all. There was no way that he wouldn’t do the call, except for a really good reason.
However, Freygar was aware of how cunning and strong Casper was. He wasn’t sure if the guy could pull through big waves of enemies or a single high-ranked threat, but he was not an ordinary guy at all.
’If something happened, we need to have faith in him. After all, the essence of our plan relies on him. At least, the second part can’t be done without the White warrior.’
Brenna was an insightful person, so it was obvious that she would think in such stuff, particularly because she was having terrible predictions in the last times.
’I wonder which one of her predictions will be right this time. It’s always tricky to deal with someone who doesn’t know how to differ her normal dreams from her farsightedness. Frankly, I would prefer that this power was given to someone else other than her. After all, the only thing that limits her so much is this mental disease she has.’
As the Aesir thought it, he walked across the room of the abandoned building he was in. It was abandoned because the Royal Family sold it and their buyers were still trying to move things there. Since Freygar was trying to be furtive in his preparations, he preferred to choose a place like that to get ready. He was aware that the enemy could have eyes everywhere.
’I am feeling uneasy all of a sudden...’ He stopped his walk at the nearest window and looked down towards the beautiful streets of that floor. Just a few people were walking there, mostly servants of the Royal Family.
’Some while ago, I felt more confident, but now... I honestly don’t know how the future of the Castle will be.’
The impenetrable Castle he grew inside, with the most powerful warriors of District 42, the strongest army, the noblest resources, was under threat. It was inconceivable for him. His mind couldn’t imagine those walls shattering and collapsing in front of his eyes. He couldn’t imagine that someone was capable to enter that place like this.
In the end, he decided to go out of that building. He was safe inside there, but feeling that the Castle wasn’t.
’I need to protect this place. I need to maintain the resilience of the symbol of my faith!’
...
Brenna was looking to the ceiling of the Castle. She was missing to have a blue sky above her head. It has been a while since she didn’t go out from there, after all. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
The Royal Family was serious when talking about devoting the Aesir’s soul and life to them and everything else, so they got to obey whatever they wanted them to do. Even if they didn’t want to do so, the masks would oblige them since king Leif had the power to control it just like the Forger.
’Because of this stupidy thing of vowing my life and soul to the Royal Family, now I need to live under their rules and orders. They always say to me that I can’t go out of the Castle, so now I need to be stuck here. That’s a hassle.’
Brenna’s mind worked just like a children’s would do. Because of it, her conception of the world was similar, which made her curious about a lot of things surrounding her. In the Castle there were quite a few interesting things to explore, but, since she got captured when just a child and was raised inside there, she knew almost everything that it had.
She had memories from her days when she was still 3 years old. Those memories were so real and palpable that it was just like she was living those moments again. Inside her head, she could see a very poor place, with people and machines wandering together, a big wall surrounding everything, and a horizon that seemed infinite; one could just imagine what had farther away, in a place where the eyes couldn’t reach from that distance.
’I think I want freedom, but I am not a Frelsi... Anyway, they said that I can’t be a Frelsi, so I won’t be even if I wanted it. However, if I am not them, and don’t like to be an Aesir, what am I?’ Those were complex thoughts that sometimes she had. Ramblings that were fitter to an adult than a kid.
That question came quickly and vanished just as quickly. She wasn’t too good at maintaining her focus at all. Soon, she was thinking again about the possibility to call Freygar or Ari and talk about something. When she was afraid or anxious, she liked to have someone to help her to be at ease.
’Soon, we will need to fight. I am pretty sure of it. I saw a city in flames and it won’t be lasting too long to happen. There was another one with a green smoke as well and... Hmm, hey! That man is selling something interesting.’ She brushed off whatever the thing she was reasoning before and switched her attention to other things.
Brenna would last some time to remember that what she was thinking before was important for the other Aesirs, and so they would be still blind probably until it was too late to say anything.
...
Casper opened his eyelids slowly, blinking sometimes to get his vision less blurry and analyze the place he was into. The soldier wasn’t dizzy or feeling pain in any part of his body.
’Hmm, it seems that the plan is going well until now. They didn’t notice anything, as it seems.’
Looking around, he couldn’t notice anything important. It was a standard jail that he was inside. There wasn’t any cellmate there. The place didn’t have too many things on it as well, just a chair, a bed, and a sink.
’There is no toilet or bucket here, which leaves me thinking that they don’t want to keep me here for a long time. I hope so, at least. If they will keep me stuck here, then it will be troublesome to make the other parts of the plan.’
The soldier already had to deal with another prison before and it was a hellish situation. He was rooting that he wouldn’t need to pass through the same mess as before.
’I think that the shield couldn’t absorb the impact of the collision against the building completely. I feel that my shoulder is in pain and not moving as it should, though nothing concerning. My head seems to be okay, but this headache doesn’t leave me alone. Another thing is that my leg doesn’t seem at 100% as well.’
The White warrior was wondering if he didn’t overestimate the power of that shield. Although that one was one of the best he could get, maybe its endurance wasn’t as high as he thought it would be.
’Well, anyway, the important thing is that I am alive, not broken, and the plan will continue. After all, these guys captured me instead of killing me, so they need me for something. This way, I can infiltrate their base and discover some things. I just need to play the game right.’
In the end, that collision against the building was just an act! Casper reformulated part of the plan, so he could use that siege as an advantage against the Frelsi to make them capture him.
Casper stood from the ground, taking the dust out of his clothes.
’If they think that I will do something so idiot like hitting a building in the middle of a situation like that, they shall be underestimating me a lot. Anyway, that’s a good thing. They don’t have any idea what kind of virus they put inside their place. Right, Yanke?’
’Yes, Master. I am prepared to start this infiltration and see what we can get out of it.’ The little robot answered, inside Casper’s head.
’Stay away for now and just wait for my signal. The right moment will surely come!’
Soon, someone appeared in front of Casper’s cell. He was a pretty old man with a huge white beard long enough to come out from his mask. His eyes, though, weren’t the ones of someone as old as him, but a determined youth.
The soldier already guessed who was that guy.
’It seems that I found the boss right off the bat, huh?’
