District 42-Chapter 197: The last soldier part 1
The group began to jog through that corridor. Those who had ammunition and guns remaining gave some of theirs for the ones who had not anymore. They treated very quickly their wounds, just to the point where they could run and shot without feeling too much pain. All of this while moving towards their objective, a really hastily preparation.
They jogged towards the other extreme of the corridor, which seemed to be almost infinite. It served just to remember the group that they were running after something they couldn’t reach anymore. Everyone interpreted roughly in the same way.
However, they stubbornly kept going forward, no matter how much their minds tried to fool them, or put them down.
It wasn’t a time where they could afford themselves to be the least insecure about their future.
With their hands tightly wielding the guns, their heads raised, and the final of the corridor finally appearing, the soldiers surpassed that point of no return and stepped into the place that would be their eternal grave.
Casper was the first to step there, and at the same time as his body appeared there, he drew a grenade and threw it randomly inside that room.
Just as soon as it touched the ground, it exploded. An explosion incredibly strong for such a small and quick grenade.
A part of someone’s body flew beside Casper’s head, and he knew that he made a lot of damage to those people. At least four of them were caught by the explosion.
As he had predicted, they designated some soldiers to defend the entrance of the complex.
As the others from the group entered as well, the exchange of fire started.
Casper’s group was quick on their decisions, harmonic on their teamwork, and deadly on their aim. The enemies didn’t stand a chance, and the infiltration was quick.
Once the first room was taken, they split into two groups of five, going to different paths.
They used all their resources to keep going without too much harm. The goal was to keep going nonstop through the complex until they could find the Operation center.
Split into groups at that point was more efficient, although it was dangerous.
However, the more time they stayed at the Black Widow, the more probable was for reinforcements to arrive and ruin their plans. Their operation in that military camp was supposed to last less than 15 minutes.
With the deadline in mind, and their objective more than clear, they kept rushing inside that place and doing a real mess.
There wasn’t a single person inside that Operation base that wasn’t military, so they all had guns and knew very well how to use them. Everyone there was an enemy capable to kill, so they needed to be relentless in their judgment, and pull the trigger without hesitation to anyone who wasn’t from their group.
The first one to die from those 10 troops was a soldier ranked as general, 25 years old. A bullet got stuck in his head while he tried to save one of his comrades to be targetted.
Ana was leading the half of the group in which he belonged, and her heart nearly broke when she needed to force herself to just brush it off and keep shooting and advancing.
The second and the third were from the half that Casper was leading.
His group had arrived in front of a room that couldn’t be surpassed, there were a lot of well-positioned soldiers inside there, it was a dead zone, but there wasn’t another way around.
Without no one asking for this, these two nodded with their heads to each other, bursting into the room, causing a slaughtering to happen inside there... But they couldn’t get out alive from there as well.
The passage of Casper’s group was possible thanks to that, and they continued to do what they could to go further and further.
As long as they kept pressing forward, infiltrating even more the complex, things got more dangerous.
Turrets set inside the place started to appear; drones were flying through the place, sometimes serving as kamikazes, others shooting at the group.
They weren’t just fighting against men, but machines as well now.
Both groups started to get harmed more easily, and then the casualties returned.
One more died in Ana’s group when they were rushing inside one of the rooms, passing by there like lightning bolts. This soldier got shot in the leg and fell to the ground.
The turret that targeted him was quick to shoot again and finish him off.
Casper’s group was going through rooms until that point, and not always engaging in combat.
The result of that was a bunch of soldiers giving chase at them. And their situation got worse when they got into a corridor after so long.
If they needed to run through a straight corridor, they would be caught for sure. However, nothing was helping it. Whether they retrieved or not, they would be killed the same way, so it was more worth keep running.
While they were escaping in the corridor, the soldiers giving chase at them began to shoot nonstop. For various times, one of them got shot but kept running regardless the pain.
Nonetheless, it didn’t take long for one of them to be targeted in the wrong spot and fall to the ground.
Casper thought for a moment to stop, turn back and fight against his hunters to save his comrade, but once he turned around, their eyes met.
His friend was already taking off the pin of two grenades on his waist, with his eyes watering, and a single word coming out of his mouth.
"Go!"
Without thinking about it anymore, Casper and his only friend alive continued to run.
The explosion and the ceiling of the corridor collapsing sounded behind them, but they didn’t turn to look. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
Meanwhile, Ana was in a pinch as well. Her group had just three people, counting her, and they needed to stop at some point, take a cover, and exchange shots with a bunch of soldiers who were closing the way.
"Damn! We are running out of ammo again!" She cursed, wanting to throw her gun away with anger.
She looked at her friends who were hiding behind a cover near her. They seemed to be running out of bullets as well, and one of them got shot in the shoulder.
"What do I do...? What do we do?"
She was running out of options, and while she was thinking, a bullet pierced the metallic table she was covering behind and scratched her arm.
"They won’t miss every shot like this! Let alone the ammo, we are running out of luck as well!" She got into position, drawing the machete on her waist and breathing heavily.
The other two soldiers also drew their own blades, looking at her.
"They are out of ammo as well... We will be doing it, then... Damn... I need to admit, it’s hard to think that we will die here... I don’t want to die... Please..."
She closed her eyes for a moment, counting out loud, for her comrades to hear her voice.
"One... Two..." She breathed in, holding it, and apologizing mentally to Casper. "Three!"
The trio got out from their covers and ran towards the soldiers shooting at them.
...
Casper was still doing his best with the last soldier that could survive in his group. They didn’t know for how many times they were running and shooting there, but it seemed to be hours.
The colonel noticed that his comrade was doing his best to hide a wound he had in his leg. The man seemed to be struggling at his max to not show it, he was sweating a lot, and Casper could bet that it was cold sweat.
It was noticeable how his hands trembled as well, and he was running out of breath quicker than usual.
"Whatever that got him on the leg targeted an artery. He will bleed until he cannot run anymore, and then will die..." The soldier bit his lips in frustration.
He couldn’t save that one as well. He was just pushing himself because he needed to be with Casper until they could finish there.
They were passing for the final rooms until they could get into the operation center.
The enemies were still chasing after them. They could find another path to be able to catch up with Casper and the soldier.
In one of those rooms, someone appeared all of a sudden, and if he did not run out of ammo, the colonel would have surely shot at her.
"Ana!" Casper ran towards her, nearly hugging his beloved, but being prevented to do so by the same.
"Now it’s not time for this, colonel. We must keep going on our way." She seemed to be paler than usual, and her voice was weak.
Casper worried about her, but kept quiet and just returned to his rush to the Operation center. He decided to not ask about what happened with her other four comrades as well... Her face said everything he wanted to know.
