Chapter 183: Terrorist attack part 2

In the background, the sounds of that calamity were still as loud as before. More shots could be heard as long as Casper advanced in the streets and got closer to the zone where his apartment was. More people running for their lives, and some getting killed, could be spotted or heard as well. That was a horror show.

The soldier was feeling completely insecure. His mind was in alert, and everything that seemed a human was being an object of suspicion for him, every movement that didn’t belong to Casper could be from the enemy.

Since the soldier didn’t have any weapons to protect himself, it would be troublesome to be spotted by one of the terrorists who were there. He couldn’t just act boldly and got shot by a rifle or something.

If well-aimed, a shot would kill him in the exact moment it landed, if a bad-aimed one struck him, he wouldn’t die, but he surely would afterward, probably for internal bleed. That was how frightening a gun could be, and bulletproof vests were the only means to be assured to not be stuck in the worst points.

Casper wasn’t equipped at all, and while he ran through the streets, preventing to have an encounter at all costs, he tried to find something worth for him to rely on. A bulletproof vest was a no-go, he hardly would find a fire gun lost in the ground and with ammunition, too.

"If I remember well, there is somewhere that I can find weapons here... But I don’t know how will be the state of that place. If these terrorists are really serious, and I have no doubt that they are, then they probably killed everyone there and turned the place just into wreckage and nothing more... But that’s the only thing I got here."

To be faster, Casper decided to take a short path by passing through the establishments and houses. This way, he could walk at a higher pace and maybe even try to run. He would also get himself out of the streets, and if someone spotted him, he would have an entire building as a cover to himself.

Although he barely found people while crossing those places, and his haste made it difficult for him to stay focused, Casper could cover all the way until the police station of his city.

He stopped by a market, that was just a street away from the police station. He took advantage of his position to give a better look there and see if everything was clear.

Unfortunately, it was just as he thought it would be. The street where the police station was localized was one of the worsts he saw until that point. Every single building there was resumed in ashes and wreckage, the bullet casings could be seen all over the ground, and Casper even thought to have noticed some corpses here and there.

The police station, obviously, was the worst one, and the police officers that probably didn’t have the time to react, were now unable to do anything, their bodies were piled up on top of the ruins of the police station.

Casper waited some more minutes, and nothing happened. As that local was completely destroyed, the terrorists probably would not bother to come back there again.

The soldier approached the police station, climbing some wreckage in the way, and searching through there until he saw the pile of corpses he spotted from far away. That was a dejecting and disgusting sight, and the soldier barely could be able to look at it, but his heart was already frozen, he could not act all emotive in a situation like that. He probably would see a lot of other piles just as that one, after all.

He started to search through the bodies of the dead police officers. It took some time until he could find what he was searching for, but he did it.

"A pistol is better than nothing. I can pull through this situation just with it. It’s easier to kill someone with one of these than with a pen." He looked at it to confirm if it was loaded, and it seemed to be full. "Unfortunately, there is not a second one here. Those terrorists probably let this one with a gun because they didn’t notice..."

Casper left that place after give a brief salute to those men. Even though they could not do something for the citizens, they died fulfilling their jobs.

"Ok, now that I am armed and ready, I think I can head to my apartment. The only problem is that the police station is very far away from where I lived... It wasn’t the best idea I had, in the end, but walk through the streets unarmed was giving me chills and I was losing concentration..."

Casper began to walk again. Suddenly, the distance he needed to go through to arrive at his apartment seemed to be bigger than it was, but it surely was his mind playing with him.

"I am still trying to assimilate how it all happened, and why I don’t remember anything that was going on in the day before, or a couple hours ago... I woke up at the streets already, after... after I hit my head, I guess...? If this thing is what really happened to me, if I hit my head, then it’s reasonable that I had memory loss, but why my head doesn’t hurt, why there isn’t any injury?"

The more he thought about that, the more his mind couldn’t accept that situation as being... as being truth. He knew that it was a normal conception of a human that was passing for a hard time, to think that it seemed unreal, but that situation was different...

Before he could keep reasoning, Casper heard a burst of shots coming from his left. He was crossing a street and passing beside a turning to the left. He didn’t pay enough attention there.

Once he heard the sound of the bullets bouncing on the buildings and floor, the soldier kicked the ground, running with strong and long strides and jumping inside the nearest house there, breaking its window and hitting his back when falling.

Some sharp fragments of glass entered in his flesh, but at that point, he didn’t mind it. He was just glad to not being shot.

"They will come for sure. These people aren’t professionals, tactical progression doesn’t fit them. Most likely they will bet that I am unarmed and hurt, and will advance like crazy to finish me."

Casper heard strange sounds behind him or rather voices. They were near, so it was coming from inside the house for sure.

He stood up, drawing his pistol as fast as he could and looking with serious and murderous eyes to the two people behind him. In the end, they were just two citizens, most likely a couple, and were hugging each other while hiding themselves in a corner of the room.

"A-Are you damn serious with me!? Now I need to protect them as well?" His response was just another rain of bullets aimed at the house, that destroyed its windows and pierced the walls.

Casper threw himself on the ground again, never avoiding the eyes of the couple who was screaming in despair because of the sudden attack.

The soldier felt the need to yell at them to shut the hell up, but he could not lose his cool there.

"Now, the priority is to take these people out of here. I need to find a way to leave this house... But it will not be worth trying, since out there is even dangerous than inside here..." The assault against the house ended, Casper couldn’t say for sure if the terrorists were reloading or if they stopped to shoot to approach even more.

Either way, the soldier wasn’t willing to stay laid on the ground and just wait to see what would happen. In a quick decision, he stood upright after the shoots ended, running with all his might towards the couple.

He took both the man and the woman by their collars, forcing them to get up. The woman was just crying hysterically, and she wouldn’t be back so easily, so Casper focused on the man. He slapped him on the face, making him come back to his senses, the sound of that blow echoed through the house.

He stopped to cry and moan for a while, a weak gleam returning inside his eyes. However, it was still clear how frightened he was.

"Take your woman and run now after me! I will get you two out of here, but you need to cooperate. Understood!?" The man didn’t respond, so Casper shouted at him again. "Understood!?"

After the man nodded, Casper was going to run to another place of the house more distant from the streets, nonetheless, he could notice with his peripheral vision that something was thrown inside there.

With just a glance, the soldier knew what it was.

"Molotov cocktail..."
