Chapter 167: Hiding Identity

The three garrison soldiers hung way back behind the Shield Guards.

"It’s weird, why did they send us to collar Demi?"

The tailing job was boring as dirt, so one of them started grilling his buddies.

"What do you mean?"

Another didn’t get it, so the last guy spelled it out:

"He means that among small-time fighters, Demi’s no pushover.

We three are pretty run-of-the-mill ourselves among the small-timers."

"?"

Seeing his buddy still looked lost, the guy kept explaining with a sigh: 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"Going by how we usually do things, nabbing such dangerous criminals would definitely mean sending a sure-fire team.

Normally, the squadron leader would head up chasing low-level psychics."

That guy looked thoughtful:

"...Now that you put it that way, it really is fishy!

It’s like..."

The three looked at each other:

"...They wanted Demi to get away!!!" × 3

But they were even more stumped.

If that was really the deal, why not clue them in ahead of time?

...

Rock Sand City Garrison - Military Camp Base

Tucked away in Rock Sand City’s East District, housing all sorts of garrison psychic teams.

On the outside, they handled blocking monster attacks; on the inside, they took care of wiping out human traitors.

It was Rock Sand City’s biggest, baddest violent outfit.

The ruckus from the crowd and the Shield Guards heading this way immediately grabbed the soldiers’ attention:

"Mon... monsters!!!"

"What’s got you all worked up? They’re just some weird-looking skeleton soldiers."

"Strange, why haven’t I seen them around before?"

"Are they here on business?"

"Stay sharp, keep your eyes peeled."

"..."

Though the skeleton monsters marching over from way out there looked pretty intimidating, the gate soldiers weren’t sweating it.

This was the garrison base—the most militarily powerful spot in all of Rock Sand City.

Nobody would be dumb enough to take a swing at this place.

Stomp! Stomp!! Stomp!!!

Heavy footsteps rang out in perfect sync.

Heavy weights kept pressing down on their chests.

Only when the Shield Guards got close did the soldiers really feel that bone-chilling killing aura, like mountains of corpses and rivers of blood marching toward them.

Their souls were screaming warnings at them.

They started kicking themselves for not alerting the captain sooner.

"I’ve come to pay the garrison a visit."

The voice drifted from far to near.

A shadow fell over them.

A hand several times bigger than normal stuck out a light golden alchemical ring.

The garrison squad instinctively followed this elegant hand up...

Purple Vortex flashed a grin.

Its fine features were sharply defined, its bloody heart thumping away.

"Hiss! Hiss!!"

"Mon... monster!!!"

Some soldiers got so spooked they drew their great swords, ice-cold fear shooting through their hearts!

"Roar!"

Purple Vortex pushed—why weren’t they taking it?

Top-shelf high-level expert vibes rolled off it naturally.

The soldiers were wound tight as springs, nervously on guard, yet none had the guts to step forward and take it.

"Looks like Purple Vortex’s looks aren’t going over too well."

Inside the bronze palanquin, Carlos’s brow creased slightly.

Just as he thought about having Red Spirit swap in for Purple Vortex to handle the talking:

"Boom!"

"Sand!"

On the ground, golden sand somehow surged up like ocean waves.

A woman slowly rode the sand waves, reaching the gate in just a few heartbeats.

The moment they spotted the woman, the soldiers quickly bowed with respect:

"Com... Commander!!!"

The commander had shown up!

They were saved!

The tense soldiers all let out sighs of relief.

The commander’s arrival pumped up their confidence—some even had the nerve to look straight at Purple Vortex’s freaky face.

"Commander?"

The woman standing before them had a cool expression, her eyes showing she’d seen it all.

Decked out in golden battle armor, her wheat-colored skin faintly glittered with gold dust.

Her presence was like a bottomless pit. The moment she appeared, Carlos felt crushing pressure bearing down on him.

"Isn’t this a little too convenient?

I just dropped by for a visit, and a Controller-level bigwig shows up!"

Going by normal protocol, someone should go inside to report, then squadron leader, then captain—only finally might garrison brass appear.

Carlos had a strong hunch this commander was specifically waiting for him.

Rock Sand City Garrison Commander Marin crossed her arms, looking in amazement at this formidable crew:

"These are skeleton soldiers summoned through the Death Herald pathway?"

Taking a closer look, she was blown away.

These skeleton soldiers’ auras were generally at mid-level.

The two particularly eye-catching ones had actually hit high-level—she even instinctively felt a hint of danger.

"When did the Death Herald pathway cook up such powerful evolution routes?"

...

"The commander actually showed up!!!"

Demi instinctively ducked, hiding behind a Shield Guard.

She couldn’t help but worry, then suddenly had a lightbulb moment:

"Hold on! I got framed!

What am I scared of?"

Maybe this was actually a break!

...

Carlos sure hadn’t expected a commander-level figure to pop up so fast.

Out of politeness, he couldn’t keep lounging in the bronze palanquin.

Two Shield Guards carefully set down the bronze palanquin. The curtain dropped, and Carlos, fully armored, stood up and stepped out.

"Ember City, Valois Family, Carlos Valois, pays his respects to the commander."

His voice was steady and strong, unhurried, with a calm confidence that he had everything under control.

"Carlos Valois?"

Hearing this name at first, Commander Marin’s brown eyes showed confusion.

’Valois?

Valois from Ember City?

This name sounds familiar.

Feels like I’ve heard it somewhere...’

The sea of sand shifted.

Commander Marin slowly moved in front of Carlos, her eyes narrowing a bit.

"Hiding your identity doesn’t match proper visiting manners."

Hearing this:

’Hiding identity?

Just now...’

Carlos realized she meant he was wearing a face guard and not showing his real face.

"That was my mistake."

Everyone’s attention zeroed in—they were all dying to see what this lord looked like.

Carlos slowly pulled off his face guard...

In a flash, the air went dead quiet!

Pointed pure white ears, deep, mesmerizing eyes, a perfect face like it was carved by the gods, giving off a naturally warm, intoxicating aura.

Distant yet noble, making people want to get closer while knowing this wasn’t someone ordinary folks could touch...

After just a few seconds, gasps burst from the watching crowd:

"Good Lord! What a dazzling sight!!!"

"More brilliant than the most perfect gems! More intoxicating than the most captivating treasures!"

"Oh! My heart’s going crazy—I can barely catch my breath!"

"..."
