Destined Entwining: Capturing My Devoted Beau-Chapter 586 - 314: Ups and Downs (Second Update)
The plate was large, but the portion of food inside was just a small pile, artfully arranged, with an orchid placed at the edge.
Ryan Sheldon said to Betty, "This is escargot in garlic butter."
Betty twitched her mouth, thinking this was difficult.
Even though she knew it was a famous foreign dish, she really didn’t want to eat snails, no matter how well they were cooked.
So she just smiled and nodded, taking a sip of the pre-dinner wine.
Autumn Stetford paid attention to Betty but didn’t notice her outfit; instead, she observed her fair and delicate skin, stunning beauty, and distinctive charm, feeling quite satisfied with her.
She chatted with Betty, subtly inquiring about her family background.
"Where is Miss Xi from? Where do you work?"
"I’m from Y City. I went to college in the Capital City and found a job here after graduating," Betty thought that talking was better than eating snails, so she elaborated, "I graduated last year with a degree in Public Relations from Yan University, and my job is related to my field, so it’s quite suitable."
"You graduated from Yan University?" Autumn Stetford was both surprised and delighted, "That’s one of the top universities in the country! Any girl who gets into Yan University is amazing."
As she spoke, she raised her glass towards Betty.
Betty hurriedly raised her glass as well, smiling, "You’re flattering me; there are many Yan University students. I’m just an unnoticed one among them."
"I’ve heard all the girls from Yan University are impressive. This is the first time I’ve met one," Ruby Sheldon was very warm to Betty, "Come visit my house more often, okay? I don’t have many friends, and it’s hard to find a kindred spirit."
Ryan Sheldon was happy and proud to see his family liking Betty, and he said with a smile, "Betty, your memory is really bad. Abi isn’t the first Yan University girl you’ve met. There’s also your often-mentioned Sister Lawrence!"
Ruby Sheldon’s eyes widened, "Sister Lawrence also graduated from Yan University?! When did that happen?"
"Last year as well. She and Abi were even roommates," Ryan glanced at the untouched snails on Betty’s plate, guessing she didn’t like them, and immediately pressed the bell to call a waiter, saying, "Bring this lady a steak, well-done but tender."
He had seen Betty eat steak before and knew she liked it.
Betty gave him a grateful look, thinking that although he seemed carefree, he was quite considerate.
A person who is carefree even with himself but is so thoughtful towards another person really puts in the effort.
Ruby Sheldon, however, was shocked, "Abi was roommates with Sister Lawrence?! This world is too small! — Abi, you don’t like eating snails? You should have told me earlier, I could have them change a dish for you. Do you want to try some dumplings? Although this is a foreign cuisine restaurant, they do have dumplings, but they’re stuffed with cheese..."
As she spoke, she giggled.
Betty twitched her mouth and said, "Cheese-stuffed dumplings... I’ll stick with steak."
Ruby Sheldon was surprised that Betty could refuse her offer, and her smile froze, no longer speaking as she quietly picked up her knife and fork to eat snails carefully.
Autumn Stetford knew Ruby was unhappy, and her impression of Betty also plummeted.
She casually said, "We only have three kids in our family. Betty is the youngest, and both her brothers pamper her. Abi, do you have any siblings?"
Betty suddenly remembered Lawrence Winters’ warning to her.
She quickly glanced at Ruby Sheldon, realizing Lawrence wasn’t exaggerating.
This sister-in-law was indeed quite challenging.
You couldn’t say she intentionally said these things because, given her upbringing, she really didn’t need to gauge others’ thoughts, so she spoke however she pleased.
Whether others were happy or not, she didn’t think about it.
Betty cautiously said, "I don’t have any siblings; I’m an only child."
"An only child? What business is your family in?"
"My family is just an ordinary working-class family, not in business." Betty’s father actually had his own business, but she didn’t want to reveal too much.
Her impression of the Sheldon family wasn’t very good, and coupled with Lawrence’s warning, she instinctively downplayed her family’s presence.
"Ordinary working-class?" Autumn Stetford gave her a look, "What company are they with?"
Betty: "..."
Ryan Sheldon also sensed the tension in the air.
He glanced at Ruby and Autumn Stetford, dissatisfied, and said, "Mom, are you conducting a household registration check? Abi didn’t say anything, and there’s no need to make things difficult for her just because of Betty, right?"
Ruby Sheldon finally raised her head and said aggrievedly, "Second brother, how can you say that? What did Mom do to Abi that was difficult? Besides, I didn’t do anything wrong; I was just quietly eating."
Betty herself was a master of the green tea persona, and seeing Ruby’s act, she thought to herself, wow, this white lotus is truly unparalleled, the key being everything was so natural and seamless, really without flaw.
Autumn Stetford was also a bit upset, looking at Ryan Sheldon, "In the past, when we asked you to return home you refused, staying abroad for years and mingling with foreign women. Now you’re back and still opposing us. You won’t be satisfied until you drive me to my grave, will you?"
"I wasn’t mingling with foreign women!" Ryan jumped up, looking increasingly anxious as he explained to Betty, "I just had a few girlfriends! You see, I’m pushing thirty, and if I had no girlfriend at all, that would be a big problem too! Don’t you think?"
Though Betty was a fan of CEO romances, she wasn’t strict enough to expect a nearly-thirty-year-old man to still be a virgin in real life.
She smiled, attempting to comfort Ryan, "Who hasn’t dated a few people? I understand, you don’t need to explain."
"Oh, so Miss Xi has had a few boyfriends too?" Autumn Stetford turned to Betty again, continuing the "household registration check."
Aiden Sheldon finally spoke up, "Alright, no talking during meals or before sleeping, let’s eat first."
