Chapter 15: The Spell’s Trickery

Alex’s eyes panicked, and he tried remaining calm, but he couldn’t.

’He should be dead by now after speaking with Cassie. Why are the effects not working properly?!’

That thought continued to reside within him as Cassie shook Miro’s hand properly. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Alex stood there, with an uneasy feeling he had never felt in a long time.

The three of them started walking away, "Anyways, see you guys soon, at the academy, of course."

Miro left, whispering his last words.

Then, the guards yelled out again, "Come on! We don’t have time!"

"Coming," Rachel proclaimed, "Guys, let’s go, forget about those jerks."

While Alex walked in from behind the two of them, his heart throbbed, slightly frightened.

’But why,’ Alex thought, ’Why does this feeling excite me?’

They now stood just below the stairs that led upwards toward the altar’s floor. Rachel took the lead, bowing down. Cassie followed thoroughly, and Alex understood the plan, so he followed along.

"Close your eyes," she whispered, "Do it right."

Cassie and Alex listened quietly, the acolytes continued to hum, as the priest stepped up.

’I’ll have to figure it out later, but for now, it isn’t the time.’

The priest stepped forward; his presence didn’t feel holy, but quite the opposite. It felt dark, demanding, and a slight bit Demonic.

Neither Rachel nor Cassie bore that feeling, but Alex, for some reason, did.

The priest looked down before him, gazing straight at the three individuals ready to command a trial. No chatter before, no request, a simple, straight-up procedure. It was almost like the cathedral was made for this moment.

The priest placed a hand out, his face covered by that small white plastic blanket, then uttered the following words.

"I heed the," The priest pulled out his other arm, both of the priest’s palms aimed directly to the ones bowed down before his very own feet, "Oh great deities, from every land you forsake, from every piece you partake, I only ask of you this one wish."

The Alcolytes then stopped humming, while the priest put both his hands together, "That wish is to provide protection on these unfettered tamers, preparing for their upcoming trials."

Then, a slight glow hinted around them, but each of them kept their eyes shut.

----------------------------------

[Activated Encantation Spell!]

└ Positional Lock!

[Description]

└ Anyone who has been given permission, followed by the user of this spell, can sense your position at any given moment.

[Beast Required To Create Such Spell]

└ ??????

----------------------------------

Alex opened his eyes for a slight second, then noticed something was off.

’This wasn’t a sign-up,’ he thought, ’It’s for them to restrain us.’

----------------------------------

[Enchantment Cancelled!]

[Reason]

└ Long-lasting incantations that are deemed harmful to the user are automatically restricted based on their severity and potential damage.

----------------------------------

Alex smiled, but for some reason, that same glow still radiated off of Alex, but he didn’t pay it much heed.

He realized now this spell would be active for both Rachel and Cassie, so he would have to move slightly differently from here on out, or else he could get caught by anyone watching over him, studying him, or perceiving his every move.

The only individuals who can use direct incantations or spells sustained and initiated through the use of mana are those studying and chosen by the church. The highest order of the church’s hierarchy is stated to be able to take on the highest rank of a beast-tamer.

But that was something Alex would have to find out for himself.

...

Then, the priest moved back, the acolytes resumed, their hums spread across the room once more.

"Now, my children, the spell is active for each of you, so you may now move as you please, but remember..." The pause felt longer than expected. "The great deities are always watching over you, so do not fathom to make any misdeeds that would affect the church if you would."

They stayed kneeling, and each of them accepted, nodding their heads, including Alex.

’Yep, I was definitely right, they’re going to be watching over our every move.’ Then, one thought dawned over him, ’What if I try fighting one?’

But, at his current state, he wouldn’t dare to do so. The church’s hierarchy only ever hires top-class Beast-Tamers for the jobs they assign, so for Alex, it would be dangerous.

Plus, for the time being, it was only an assumption. His perspective on the church can be a complete lie, and will soon be forgotten.

The priest then stepped back again, "Oh, beautiful young ones, if you very much would, please just wait three minutes for us to finalize the spell, and then you can be off."

They nodded again, waiting patiently, waiting and waiting...

To Alex, it felt like hours. To him, it felt irritating, knowing he’s standing kneeled to a person working for the very thing he finds suspicious, just annoyed him.

Ever since Alex was a kid, as an aristocrat, he was never allowed to really flee past the main royal section, deeper within Beast-Fall capital. But he always heard how vast and grand the world was, and wanted to search it out himself.

But he was always confined to his room or the training facilities meant for his physical growth, and he had never once seen a place like this.

...

Those three minutes finally passed, and the priest left them off with one sentence.

"Be gone, children of deities, for I am one chosen by their grace, and only am I to judge."

They stood up, then the knights stepped forward, "Leave, we have others waiting."

All three turned around. Alex looked at the priest one more time, trying to figure out the way they looked, the same as those Acolytes, but couldn’t.

"Next up!"

Three other individuals walked past Alex and his group from behind. "See you guys at the trials."

One kind but random short male boy childishly stated.

Cassie thanked him kindly, but Rachel and Alex walked off as if nothing had ever happened.
