Chapter 38: A Mission (3)

Many people understood and agreed with Azrael’s reasoning. Since they did not think much of the human princess, they naturally could not understand what a fragile human could probably do to help their great general. Most of them were prejudiced enough to think that she would join hands with her dead clansmen and bring harm to the second prince.

In any which way, they did not understand the lord’s decision as in their opinions, Lareina’s presence would only harm Azrael.

"She can need saving at every juncture but it is up to you whether you want to save her.’’

Azrael’s brows furrowed, "My Lord...’’

With a wave of his hand, the demon lord stood up and walked away. Two lithe maids accompanied him from the door as he left.

Following his departure, the third prince and the fourth prince also stood up to leave. The fourth prince was young and he was scared of Azrael so he just wanted to escape the place once his father left.

As for the third prince, he approached Azrael with his gentle disposition but then he left without a word.

While Azrael was standing there with a frown, he heard a soft snicker from behind.

Crown Prince Lucian strode towards him, a look of sympathy on his face, ’’You should have considered she would be a drag when you stepped up to marry her.’’

Both the men’s gazes met and an unspoken tension seemed to flicker in the air until the crown prince sneered and left.

...

’’My Lady, you are back!’’ Rosie draped a cloak over the woman as she supported her inside the bedchamber.

’’You can leave.’’

Seeing that Lareina’s expressions seemed disoriented, Rosie retreated quietly.

It took Lareina some time to get rid of all the layers of her clothes. After changing into a nightgown, she climbed into the bed. But before her head could touch the pillow, the door was kicked open with a resounding ’bang’.

She flinched instinctively at the sound. With the sheets draped on her legs, she glanced at the man who strode towards the bed, dragged a wooden chair with one hand and sat in front of her.

"Why?" his gaze was like that of a cold interrogator as he spoke, ’’Why must you go against me at every turn? You...’’ he trailed off, noticing her silent gaze.

Compared to how she had been worked up in the court earlier, she seemed rather detached.

’’Your Highness, I also asked you to refuse this mission...’’

’’You do not need to tell me what I should do.’’

Lareina nodded, ’’But I need to obey what you tell me? Because you are my husband?’’

He squinted.

’’Or because you have the authority over a weak woman like me? If I have to bend to authority eventually, I would oblige to the orders of one with the highest authority in this realm, the lord.’’

Whether it was a calm voice or subtly provocative words, it seemed to trigger him in the slightest as his fingers impatiently tapped the arm of the chair.

’’It was not a command nor was I exerting my authority on you. If you go to a place like that, you would perish, Lareina. Do you not understand that? You and I are different. It is far-fetched for you think my life would be in any kind of danger,’’ Azrael frowned,

"Earlier,’’ Lareina softened her tone, "The Lord declared that the crown prince is passionate and has the heart of a saviour but could not deal with treachery and then proceeded to appoint you for this mission, establishing three things in front of everyone Humans, dead or alive, were the most vile of all, even when compared to demons. Crown Prince Lucian is the most suited for the throne because of the qualities he possesses, he was someone who could rule and command for the demons. Third, you have the strength but you are just as treacherous as the vile humans and he should be the throne’s sword, never the one to sit on throne...’’

This statement from the demon lord seemed to be a resounding response to the never ending praise that the officials showered on Azrael. The demons valued strength the most and the demon lord swiftly asserted that as a capable crown prince, what Lucian lacked was not strength but rather a human heart.

By the end, the demon lord even questioned Azrael for his opinion. Had Azrael denied the mission, he would not only have incurred his father’s wrath but also he would have been disdained by the rest of the officials and constantly be compared with his ’saviour and passionate’ brother.

The reason Lareina had wanted Azrael to refuse to take this mission was because by this time, she had understood one thing.

The missions that the princes received were to contribute for the betterment of their realm. However, every mission that came to Azrael’s was a life and death trial.

It was almost as if the demon lord did not care for his survival in the very least. If he lived, he lived. If he perished, so be it.

"And...’’

Azrael covered her mouth with a palm, his eyes narrowed as he spat, ’’Are you not afraid of death? This is my duty towards my people and my King. I cannot refuse it or run away from it. But you do not have to put your life on stake just to get on my last nerve, which you can do without even trying.’’

She lowered her gaze.

Seeing her quiet countenance, he removed his palm from her mouth.

’’I am afraid of death,’’ Lareina gripped the sheets.

Azrael softened his tone, ’’If you refused, you would not be killed,’’ Whether nobody would want to kill her or he would protect her, he did not say but his words held conviction. She would not die.

’’As afraid as I am of death, I am more afraid that if I refused, I would have to face something more brutal than death itself.’’

A/N: Hello, sweeties~ I hope you’ve been enjoying this book so far, and I truly appreciate all the support you’ve shown. Please continue to support Lareina with your powerstones and golden tickets! I would deeply appreciate it if you could take a moment to write a review and share your thoughts with me <3

Also, I have an exciting announcement to make! I’m planning a mass release of 3-5 Chapters next week, and this time, I want you to decide the date! I’ll be doing the release after 25th January, so feel free to drop your preferred date in the comment section. If there are multiple suggestions, I’ll choose one. If no one suggests a date, I’ll assume you don’t need the mass release and cancel it(HAHA, just kidding)! I’ll pick a date myself (though it might end up delayed forever because, *sighs*, I’ve been a bit of a procrastinator lately).
