Chapter 241: The Suspicious Interrogation

Whatever worry Brooke had over Gilbert vanished in a flash, as all she could think of was the fear embedded in her body from seeing Ethan.

Her fingers tightly gripped her face, enough to dig into the skin of her cheeks, in slow, shaky breaths she panicked, "Why is he here? How did he find me?" She pointed her gaze at the steel table underneath her elbows.

Sure she was safe from him in the interrogation room, but what would she do once they were done asking her questions. What if he arranged with the police to have her set free? What if he tried to take her away again?

"No!" She shook her head, her watery eyes widened in fear, "I can’t go back, I can’t ever go back!" She cried in a deafening voice.

Her scream was met sharply by the door pushed open, Brooke raised her head, her blurry vision fixed on the officer who would be interrogating her.

A young man, about two or three years older. He pulled a seat quietly, flung a leg over the other and reclined into his chair. He wasn’t dressed in uniform, so she assumed he was a police detective.

"Good day Miss Larson, I’m detective Axel Lane, and I’ll be handling your case." He informed her, but Brooke did not seem the least bit fazed, and returned her gaze to the table.

Axel noticed the way her shoulders jerked and raised a slight brow, "Miss Larson, we have reason to believe that you were the last one seen with the victim before he collapsed and suffered a heart attack. Would you care to explain your connection to the victim?"

Brooke gasped, "Heart attack?" Her stomach churned at the thought. Gilbert was fine the whole time they were talking, why would he suddenly have a heart attack?

"The hospital reports came back, and apparently he was drugged, we’re having the wine he had tested to see if it shares the same components with the drug laced in his system." He explained, catching her up to speed.

"I see."

Axel sized her up, ’There was no drug amongst her belongings or anything suspicious. The security footage was wiped clean beforehand, I doubt she’d have access to that. And for some reason, she’s undeniably shaken up, could it be a response to her crime? Is she a first time offender? Or could it be something else.’ he thought, wondering why this woman was dragged in to the station. freeweɓnovel~cѳm

"Um, excuse me?" Brooke called out, piercing through his thoughts.

He blinked twice, "Do you have something to say?"

"Could I make a phone call?" She asked, "Just one would be fine."

"And who would you call? A lawyer?" He implored.

"A family member." She replied.

Axel kept a straight face. "Brooke," he leaned in, causing her to pull back. "Let me be frank with you, you’re in a bad place right now. The victim is in ICU, all the evidence has been wiped clean and you still haven’t given a statement I can work with. As it stands, if you don’t say something, you will end up going to jail." He told her plainly.

Axel had been told by his the captain just before he stepped in for questioning something strange.

’This questioning is just a formality, she’s been deemed guilty, so no matter what she says, don’t have it documented.’ he recalled the words of his captain.

Taking one more look at the distressed look on her face, Axel felt his resolve breaking. He always trusted his intuition, and right now he felt as though this woman was being framed for something much more than they were being told.

"I-I swear I didn’t do anything to Gilbert! We agreed to meet, but...but then he fell and started coughing up blood. I was so scared so I called for an ambulance-"

Axel cut her off, "Firstly, this Gilbert you speak off, he’s not on the government data base. What’s worse, we can’t even clarify his identity, it’s almost as though he’s a ghost." He said.

Holding his fingers up he went on, "And secondly, your phone that we found is giving our entire IT department the hardest case of their lives. Apparently, whoever designed the security system on it used some very high quality and expensive software." He narrowed his eyes.

"Brooke Larson, from what we’ve gathered, you were fired from prime star agency, and you’re cast as a side character to a bankrupt production house. However, we found two black cards in your wallet and are currently having them traced. It seems..." Axel took a pause, observing her reaction.

"You’re no ordinary woman." He remarked, unsure of whether to link this to the attempted murder.

Brooke balled her fists, "Please, I’d like to make a phone call."

Axel frowned, "I ask again, who would you call?"

"A family member."

"The man registered on your birth certificate is Scott Larson, an ex convict-"

Brooke shook her head, "Not him."

Axel sighed, "Listen Brooke, I’m trying to help you here. If you could give me something, anything at this point, it would help your case. You’re in no position to make demands, so I suggest you-" he was saying, but got cut off by the door to the interrogation room wildly flung open!

In seconds, Ethan Halton came rushing into the room and charged straight for Brooke! "You thought you could escape me?!" He yelled, reaching for her neck.

But Axel swiftly rushed to her aid, grabbing Ethan by his wrist and pinning him against the table in one swift move.

Brooke stepped back, her chest pounding as she watched Ethan squirm under Axel’s force.

Police officers immediately flooded the room, they had tried to stop Ethan from coming in, but were met by a greater shock to see the city’s richest man pinned to the interrogation table like a damned criminal!

To anyone with eyes it would seem like Axel had apprehended Ethan on pure instincts. However, it was only Brooke who for a split second noticed the angry glare in Axel’s gaze as he pushed all of his weight onto Ethan!
