Chapter 223: A Romantic Past

Brooke’s nerves were on an all time high, Thane was being targeted back here? Was there nowhere that he could feel safe? She could not help but blame herself for what was happening to him.

’If I wasn’t so focused on other things, I might’ve noticed...’ she balled her fists and bit her lip, fighting the urge to break down in tears.

But she couldn’t, not until she had heard the full story from Gilbert.

"So? Who was it that tampered with his medicine?" Brooke asked once she stepped into his bedroom.

Gilbert replied, "It was a maid hired by Matthew, but I’ve already disposed and taken care of her, she won’t pose a threat to master Grayson anymore."

Despite her anger, Brooke could not push back the thought of how convenient it was that the only witness was no where to be seen.

"But, I’m sure that you’re more interested in the mastermind than a mere maid. And I assure you Mrs Grayson that I’m actively working on a way to corner Matthew. However, I’ll need you if we’re going to make him pay." Gilbert told her.

"Make him pay? What do you mean by that? And more importantly, what proof do you have that Matthew was behind this?" Brooke questioned, wondering what it was he had to discuss with her in private.

In response, Gilbert sat opposite from her, his hands hanging in-between his thighs, a serious look in his eye. "Matthew has already tried to kill master Grayson in the past but failed."

Brooke crinkled her brows, "What do you mean he tried to kill-"

Gilbert cut her off, "Master Grayson might not have told you, but when he was younger some people tried to kill him by tampering with his medicine." he informed her.

Brooke kept a straight face, she was aware of that, it was one of the things Thane had confessed to her when he revealed his real identity to her.

He went on to explain, "At the time, the family was entertaining guests, so no one was on the floor, save for the medical staff that had been paid off."

"The family was swift to take care of the matter, but what was overlooked was the fact that one Grayson wasn’t around when the attack happened. Someone was missing from the party, and saw the whole thing but didn’t say a word to alert anyone." His tone shifted from a flat one to a serious one that matched his expression.

Catching his drift, Brooke asked, "You mean it was Matthew?"

Gilbert nodded, "He was seen coming out of master Grayson’s bedroom that day, but the testimony was covered up, perhaps by his parents, so his grandfather would have not found out."

"What proof do you have? And even if it was real, he was a child, I doubt he’d do something like that now as an adult." Brooke defended, giving Matthew the benefit of the doubt, although a part of her was curious if Gilbert was telling the truth or not.

"Matthew himself knows this, you can ask him. And if you don’t think you can, then maybe ask Hannah, she knows it too. And I guarantee she knows much more than that as well." Gilbert responded.

Brooke frowned and folded her arms, Hannah had been thrown into the mix. It was almost as though Thane was right to suspect Gilbert and Hannah both.

Gilbert got up and took his tablet, he handed it over to Brooke. It had an article already displayed on the screen. Brooke hesitantly took it off his hands and focused her gaze on what was written.

Gilbert explained as she digested it’s contents. "Matthew was behind the share buying scam the Graysons had to face more than five years ago."

Brooke read on and couldn’t believe that even the seemingly untouchable Grayson family could have gone through something that pricked at their reputation.

Skeptical, she interrogated, "And how do you know all this?"

"I was charged by master Grayson to investigate this matter further and happened to link Matthew’s involvement." Gilbert told her.

"Mr Grayson asked you to? Why? Looking at this article, it’s been over five years since the incident, and furthermore, he has already disowned his grandfather. So why would he have you look into this?" Brooke asked, her watchful gaze pointed directly at him.

Depending on what his response was, she would either believe him or have to take matters into her own hands.

Gilbert calmly answered her saying, "Your aunt, Sarah was one of the victims to Matthew’s scheme. She lost over fifteen million dollars, and has a huge debt to pay to the Graysons from losing a court case. Master Grayson instructed me to conduct a deep dive into the matter, and that was when I found the missing link."

Still confounded by the fact that her aunt was somehow involved in all this, Brooke managed to follow the conversation somewhat, "Missing link?"

He nodded, "His accomplice, the hacker he solicited for this job, the only one around him with the skills needed to carry out the scam." Without needing to say anything, Brooke had a feeling who he was talking about.

Putting two and two together, she realized why he told her about the first bit. "You mean, Matthew and Hannah are working together?" Brooke found the courage to ask.

"I’m saying, there’s not a chance that the headmaid, someone as watchful as Hannah was unable to detect a mole planted by an outsider. And more so, his medicine is always checked first by her before it’s administered to master Grayson. Her position in this house is very convenient, I was always against it at the very begining, she did not seem trustworthy enough and it seems I was right." He sat back on the bed, letting their eyes meet once more.

But Brooke wasn’t convinced fully. "Why would Hannah do this? She’s faithful to Mr Grayson, she always has been-" But Gilbert cut her off with information she wasn’t aware of.

"Of course she would help him, after all, she and Matthew shared a romantic past."
