Chapter 139: A Feeling Of Lacking And Incompetence

Brooke’s mind was in a million of places all at once, she had just found a father, and now discovered of an uncle she never even heard of.

She wouldn’t have believed Thane, had he not shown her the birth certificate of her uncle!

Looking through the details sent, Brooke felt disgusted at the crimes he had been convicted of.

"I don’t understand anything, why did my mother have Scott pretend to be my father?" She asked, raising her gaze at the breakfast Thane was busy setting on the table.

Thane sat across from her, "Brooke, you need to eat first. All this thinking will drain you out." He said in a gentle manner.

Brooke frowned, "I can’t calm down, everything around me is a lie, and I can’t seem to know whose voice I should listen to, when everyone is a liar ." She said, her gaze narrowed at the drugs Thane had set next to his plate.

A sigh escaped her lips, "I’m sorry." Her eyes softened, "It’s just-" she couldn’t bring herself to say anything and buried her forehead in her palm, demoralized.

Thane dropped his cutlery and relaxed into his seat. "If you don’t trust anyone’s voice, then trust your own. Just the way I trust your voice, it helps me to stay on the path I think is right."

"How can I trust what I don’t even know? What next? Do I find out my mother isn’t even my real mother? Or that the people who made me suffer were all strangers all along? I don’t think I’ll be able to take that." She said, weakly.

"I’m not sure if I know what I want anymore." She confessed, on the brink of tears.

Thane got up and walked over to her, he took the seat next to her, and just sat there for a while in silence.

Brooke raised her head and looked at him, "You should eat, your health is important."

"I didn’t marry you for revenge." Thane announced all of a sudden.

"What?" Her heart skipped a beat.

Thane’s eyes softened, he placed his hand on the side of her cheek and gently caressed it, staring into her gaze, searching for courage to tell her everything.

*Ring*

Brooke pulled away first, "Your phone is ringing, you should answer it." She answered sharply, pushing her hair back.

He noticed the sweat on her neck and forced a smile, "Of course." he said, then reached across the table for it.

Staring at the caller ID, he immediately picked up.

"Maverick, no matter how many times you ask, I won’t stay at the hospital-" Thane was saying, until Maverick cut him off.

"Your brother is in a dire situation." He told him.

Thane narrowed his eyes, "What happened?"

Brooke felt reluctant to let Thane leave by himself, especially after seeing him look so bothered. But Thane wouldn’t have it, he insisted she stay back, reminding her of filming which would start very soon.

In his absence, he had Hannah stay back and keep her company, and left with Gilbert. With the two women alone, and under such circumstances, they were forced to interact with each other.

"Mrs Grayson, you don’t need to look so uncomfortable, I was wrong for lying to you about the young master’s health." Hannah said, breaking the ice.

Brooke, who was busy with scrolling through social media, keeping herself busy with the recent happenings, raised her head and relaxed her shoulders.

"There’s no use in blaming yourself. You were just doing as you were instructed." Brooke told her.

"But still-"

"If anything, it’s my fault for coming here on a whim." She confessed, wheeling over to where Hannah stood.

"If I may ask, why did you do that? Did you want to meet Master Grayson’s family that badly?" Hannah asked.

Brooke nodded, "I wanted to see the sort of people that raised someone that kind and well, I was hoping that..." she took a pause, too embarrassed to complete her sentence.

Hannah crocuhed down to her eye level and held her by the hand, "That what?"

Slowly, Brooke confessed, "I was hoping that maybe they would be nice to me too, and treat me like I was family."

"Oh, Mrs Grayson." Hannah hugged her tightly, "I’m so sorry you had to go through any of this."

"No, I’m fine, really, really." She said through the tears that slid through her facade.

Hannah pulled away and helped wipe her tears. "If it helps, I want you to know that I and everyone else considers you family."

Brooke sniffled, "Everyone else?"

"Me, Gilbert and Sadie, we all think of you as family. Even the staff back home, all of Mr Grayson’s team, they all care about you." She told her, hoping to reassure Brooke.

"And most especially Master Grayson. He cares about you the most." Hannah said.

Brooke sighed, "I know that. I can sense it from the way he looks at me, from how he treats me. I know how he feels about me."

Hannah’s eyes lit up, "Then you two-"

Brooke inserted in a loud whisper, "But I’m scared, Hannah. That I’ll never be someone who can measure up to him. Every day I keep finding out ugly sides of myself."

"But you must know he doesn’t care about any of that. He just loves you." Hannah pointed out.

Brooke shook her head, "Sometimes, love isn’t enough in a relationship." She sighed and retracted her hand. "There has to be some sort of respect and self preservation."

"I hate the person I am when I’m with him. It’s as though, I can see just how clearly, how lacking and embarrassing I am. There’s nothing I can do on my own, nothing I can do to help him, and nothing I can do about my family." She revealed her thoughts, her mind flashing back to what Thane said about her uncle.

And all the crimes that he had committed.

"I’m not fit to be his partner, and no matter how much he loves me or I him, it will never be able substitute for that."
