Deceiving Her Ears: Ignoring Your Call-Chapter 147: He May No Longer Be Able to Keep Her
Isaac’s expression finally changed.
Vanessa held his arm and asked, "Sweetheart, is it because of your uncle? Is Nat trying to draw a clear line between you two?"
"This whole thing has gotten so blown up. It’s understandable if she thinks that way." Ansel’s voice was low and cold, carrying a stern edge. "After all, there’s that saying: husband and wife are birds sharing the same forest, but when disaster strikes, they each fly their own way."
Isaac clenched his fists tightly, unable to stop himself from retorting, "Don’t use your despicable way of thinking to judge her! She’s not that kind of person!"
"What did you say! You ungrateful brat!" Ansel roared in fury.
"Sweetheart!" Vanessa was also shocked, "How could you talk to your father like that?"
Isaac pulled his arm out of Vanessa’s hand and strode upstairs. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
Vanessa chased after him for a couple steps, calling out, "Sweetheart!"
"Look at him! That ungrateful brat! Unfilial son!" Ansel’s face was livid with rage, "Does he even look like a person anymore!"
"Don’t, don’t say that about him." Vanessa bit her lip, feeling heartbroken. "Nat wants to divorce him, of course he’s upset."
"I never approved of their being together anyway. It’s just as well if they split."
"But..." Vanessa opened her mouth, glanced upstairs, "Isaac’s attitude clearly shows he doesn’t want the divorce. You know better than anyone how he feels about Nat."
Ansel said coldly, "Just because he doesn’t want to divorce, does that mean he doesn’t have to? You saw Natalie Kendall’s attitude too. The divorce papers were delivered right to us. What do you think that means?"
Vanessa pressed her lips together tightly.
"It means she’s made up her mind to leave him. If we let Isaac keep clinging on, the Vaughn family would be a laughingstock!"
Vanessa opened her mouth to say something, but she also knew her husband was right.
*
Isaac pushed open the door and entered his own room.
Even if he hadn’t been back, the maids would clean every day, so the air had a fresh, clean scent.
But what he wanted now was the scent of Natalie Kendall.
He missed the room filled with her fragrance.
There was a file sitting on the nightstand.
He didn’t even need to guess what it was.
Isaac sat on the bed, rubbing his face with both hands.
Someone knocked at the door.
He looked up and saw his mother come in.
"Sweetheart, are you alright?"
Vanessa approached, her eyes drifting to the divorce papers on the nightstand.
Isaac asked, "Did she bring them herself?"
"No. Her assistant delivered them."
"When?"
"This afternoon." Vanessa paused, then said, "When her assistant came, she brought a message from Nat for your father and me."
"What did she say?"
"Nat asked us to persuade you to sign." Vanessa sat down beside Isaac as she spoke. "Sweetheart, if Nat isn’t divorcing you because of your uncle, then what’s the reason? Did you two argue? Was it serious? Why?"
Because of how he’d used her.
His damn arrogance!
He thought he could control everything, keep everything within his grasp.
But in the end, it all went off track.
There had been chances, she’d given them to him.
But he still ruined everything.
In this moment, Isaac seemed to finally snap out of it for real, the reality hitting him at last.
He realized he might truly never get her back, never be able to keep her.
He was as pale as a sheet.
Vanessa, heart aching, reached out to touch his shoulder. "Sweetheart, you..."
Isaac was too tired.
He collapsed sideways into his mother’s arms, his tall frame curling in on itself.
Vanessa held him close, tears streaming down her face.
——
The next day, Isaac didn’t come out of his room.
Early that morning, when Vanessa went to call him for breakfast, she found the window was open and he was burning up with fever.
Vanessa was terrified. She hurriedly called Ansel and together they rushed Isaac to the hospital.
Beckett Group.
When Vanessa called, Natalie had just finished the morning meeting.
