Chapter 145: Chapter 145: She Tries to Pry Off His Arm

"Where’s Uncle?"

Isaac didn’t answer his grandfather directly, but asked about Jason Grant instead.

Old Mr. Grant’s gaze dimmed; he raised his hand and pointed upstairs.

Vanessa Grant gripped Isaac’s arm and whispered, "Baby, I’ll go up with you."

Isaac nodded.

As he passed by his grandfather, he turned and met his grandfather’s gaze, which was filled with hope and longing.

In front of the bedroom door.

Vanessa said, "For a while, your uncle was hardly ever home. Your grandpa heard he’d made some new friends, always hanging out with them."

"But those guys—they’re no good at all! Once they pick a target, they get close, pretend to be friends, and then, then they lure them into bad stuff."

As Vanessa spoke, her tears began to fall again.

"Your uncle fell right into their trap. They used that to control him, took a lot of money from him. By the time your grandpa realized, it was already too late."

"When they rushed over with people, your uncle nearly overdosed and..."

Vanessa couldn’t go on, shaking with grief.

Isaac, heart aching, lifted his hand and wrapped his arm around his mom’s shoulder, his expression cold and sharp. "I’ll handle this. I won’t let them get away with it."

Vanessa sniffed and nodded, then, before Isaac entered the room, she grabbed him. "Baby, what your grandfather said... What do you think?"

Isaac stayed silent.

"I know you’re doing well at Beckett Group now. Taking over the Grant Group—this mess—will do you no good at all. Baby, you don’t have to force yourself because of me. I don’t want that for you."

Isaac reached out and hugged his mom. "I’ll think about it carefully."

Inside the room.

Jason Grant was tightly bound to the bed, looking like nothing more than a lifeless corpse.

Isaac remembered not long ago, when he’d seen his uncle at the bar, Jason was still wild and arrogant.

But how long has it been?

Now he’d become something not quite human, not quite ghost.

Some things—people just shouldn’t touch.

That’s the gate to hell itself.

Take one wrong step, and you’ll be devoured, not even bones left behind!

"...Isaac?"

Jason looked over at the sound. "You’re here."

Isaac walked forward, stood by the bedside, looking down at him.

"Heh! You must be happy now, aren’t you?" Jason sneered. "Are you laughing at me? Laughing that I’ve become like this, this pathetic mess!"

"It’s all your fault!" Suddenly, Jason shouted in rage, "You did this to me! It hurts! I can’t sleep at night! My leg hurts, my whole body hurts! The only thing that helps is that stuff!"

As he spoke, Jason’s expression suddenly turned dreamy, savoring it. "Once you try it, you can’t forget it. As long as I have it, nothing hurts anymore, my body’s light, all the worries disappear."

He started snickering, looking at Isaac. "Isaac, you should try it too. It really feels good."

The disgust in Isaac’s eyes was impossible to hide.

Not wanting to stay in the same room with Jason, he turned and headed out.

Seeing this, Jason started writhing on the bed like an ugly bug. "Isaac, don’t go! Don’t go! Tell my dad, give it to me! Give me that stuff! I don’t want to hurt anymore! Please, give me it!"

Isaac opened the door, letting Jason’s screams spill out with him.

Vanessa rushed over in a panic, wanting to go in, but Isaac stopped her.

Isaac closed the door, shutting Jason’s frantic howls inside.

"Send him to the rehab center. Tonight."

Vanessa opened her mouth to say something, but she knew this was the only way.

——

In a daze, Natalie felt as if someone was holding her.

She woke up, and as soon as she moved, the arm around her waist tightened abruptly.

"Isaac!"

She grit her teeth, trying to pry his arm off. "Let go!"

Isaac buried his head in the crook of her neck, his voice lost and weary. "Natalie, my uncle got into bad stuff."

Natalie froze.
