Debut or Die-Chapter 262
When TeSTAR’s new music video first dropped, people were expecting a stage style like this:
“Some kind of dance‐style tickle vibe?”
“Fresh and sweet, you know, jeans and a white tee or school uniforms 😢”
“That light, soft picnic feel”
But the stage unfolding before them was exactly... the opposite.
On a black stage, fluorescent LED lights and white spotlights flashed against jet‐black outfits. In the intro, each member strode to center, then brutally flung their mascot heads to the side to reveal their faces.
Swish.
The glossy “eyes” on the masks gleamed under the moving spotlights.
[Good luck! Come on in
Step on today, run faster
Hurry up
The giant burns
Immortal night]
All seven, clad in perfectly tailored rider jackets and leather pants, slid across the dark stage in electrifying choreography. Each crash of limbs sent LED glow‐paint from the backdrop flying, as imposing walker boots chopped the beat. Some members even kicked the discarded heads as if part of the choreography—Big Sejin’s part. It exuded both power and nonchalant swagger.
Not only Park Mundae, but every time a member tore off their head, bursts of vivid color popped out from within—intense shades contrasting sharply with their black looks.
[Rising impulse
Pistons every joint
Engines roar and heat up]
The track itself was composed only of extreme lows, highs, and rap, but the hooks and structure stuck instantly on first listen.
[Run faster
Split the sky
Aerial feat beyond night]
And just before the pre‐chorus drop—after the driving rush—the tone shifts with a drawn‐out exclamation:
[Yeaaaaah—]
Following the subsiding music and voices, a short silence shatters with... a whistle.
[Whi-whi-whi whi-ik!]
Then the iconic chorus choreography, all moving as one. The riff melody clings to the ear, its rhythm addictive. The playful mime‐like moves, breaking down every whistle tone and tiny fill, fit perfectly.
[Jump off]
At center, lone with black hair, Cha Yoo-jin smirked. His natural jet‐black hair—unique among the dyed crew—actually stood out. He even wore vivid scarlet contacts.
[No parachute needed
Just run
Come in]
The scrape of their boots on the slick floor was audible through the mics. Though the whistle melody was quick and cheerful, the minor key lent it a mischievous, uneasy edge.
[Tonight, in the dead of night
Just stay awake
Come in]
A siren‐like scream rode the melody into the beat.
[Like a drill
Warning Warning Emergency]
As if riding a theme‐park ride, the members vaulted over one another’s arms and legs, struck dramatic poses, then fell—a fiercely intense sequence. It felt like a survival‐show performance, indisputably.
[That’s ma thrill, Ha!]
They barreled into the ending. Dancers reappeared with fresh mascot heads, draping one over center Seon Ah-hyun like a final flourish. Meanwhile, the members in heads struck the ending formation—heads tilted like wooden puppets in a move both fierce and comical.
Creeeeeeeak!
A bike‐brake screech echoed across the stage as the lights snapped off.
[Drill]
And the performance ended. But the audience reaction was just beginning.
Wow, me
hahahahahahahahaha
TeSTAR! TeSTAR1 TeSTAR! TeSTAR!
This is insane
From the live crowd to the internet’s real‐time comments, screams, gasps, and nervous laughter poured in. There was no lofty interpretation or hidden meaning—just a wild performance designed for maximum “wow”—and the crowd loved it, because that’s exactly why it was created.
I love this so much, damn, TeSTAR’s stages are the best hahahaha
They nailed the twist
What’s Park Mundae’s rap? Also, what are all their hair colors? So amazing lol
Getting chills when they took off the heads—kinda embarrassing but so epic lol
The performance had everything: intense, fun choreography; just enough niche flair to feel unique yet still widely appealing; the surprising twist fans crave. True fans dissected every moment, soaking in the comeback until dawn. The fandom, briefly cooled by the simultaneous Youngrin release, ignited again—there hadn’t been a twist this satisfying in ages!
Compiled hair colors:
00:26 Park Mundae pink / 00:38 Lee Sejin ash blonde / 00:51 Kim Rae-bin silver / 01:02 Seon Ah-hyun light lavender...
Bae Sejin’s blue hair is everything, human summer cool 100% match 😭
I thought Cheong-woo’s new color wouldn’t suit him, but wow, northern‐duke vibes, gray is so handsome—wolf mask needs framing, throw away the man, I’m Team Wolf
Compared pre-release and backing track—there are overlaps in parts, lyrics too, seems more connected than we thought?
Release the track already, company, why not strike while the iron’s hot
Before that joyful time even ended, TeSTAR dropped their new MV at midnight.
[TeSTAR “Drill (Night)” Official MV]
Whoa
What is this hahahaha
Already??
They even released the audio lol
Finally striking while the iron’s hot?
The buzz from the stage carried straight into the video release, sending buzz volumes skyrocketing again. The MV distilled stunning visuals and powerhouse group choreography to the purest essence. In a neon‐splashed, nighttime amusement park, costumed as over-the-top staff, the members continued gun‐grip tricks and aerial stunts. Wearing their mascot heads, they even rode a wild motorcycle through the fairy‐lit plaza as sirens blared.
Fantasy amusement park day/night concept
Exactly—idol MVs are all about that group performance
Thanks to the members’ charisma, it wasn’t awkward but just thrillingly powerful—eerie, playful, and a feast for the eyes. There were no overt story‐world elements, yet it didn’t feel out of place.
[MV is insane?]
Scenes from Drill and Wheel MVs line up perfectly by timestamp
(Link) Carousel, Ferris wheel, mirror shots all the same framing
Bet more will show up
So creepy
How did they connect this?
This is crazy—read this and tried it, play Drill’s bridge in reverse, and Wheel’s chorus melody plays (file)
└ Mind-blowing
└ No wonder the bridge was odd... wow... wow...
└ 😭😭😭 So fun, when does my album come, gotta see this soon 😭
Because they mirrored the two titles. The transformation from the daytime’s freshness and mystery into the nighttime’s aggression and glamour was a delightful twist. And TeSTAR didn’t plan to discard the pre-released title entirely—they performed “Wheel (Day)” on Day 2 of ToneA as well.
[Spin the wheel
So it flies far again]
On a giant set that perfectly evoked the amusement park, they delivered a beautiful, refreshing performance using maximal camera work. That stage might’ve stood on its own, but in contrast with “Drill (Night),” it truly grabbed attention—and lifted TeSTAR’s reputation a notch.
TeSTAR has such range, fandom fun for sure
Two title tracks that feel so different—love how extreme the contrast is lol
Real artists nail their craft...
Oh they lined up tracks on the charts too, sneak-drop at midnight, tough pull, congrats congrats
TeSTAR’s strategy of capturing every bit of buzz except the #1 streaming spot was a smash. Yet the chief architect of this plan clicked his tongue at the aftertaste.
“No mission clear.”
I frowned at the mission window’s countdown still running. In fact, we’d won one grand prize at this ToneA—the Artist of the Year award.
“That was only possible because they give three awards for grand prize.”
VTIC took Album of the Year, Youngrin took Song of the Year, and we snagged one. VTIC fans still grumbled that it was “stolen” due to company politics, so maybe it was only natural—like our rookie‐of‐the‐year win.
“The public has to acknowledge you as worthy of the grand prize.”
In other words, we needed to be the undisputed top, like current VTIC. So far, TeSTAR was still the challenger.
For now.
“This year, I’ll push until knockdown.”
Maybe this album could do it. Fans had been primed—the album’s sales were huge: over 700,000 reserved copies. Even more than “Bureum.” ...Sure, the four‐version release plus limited special editions helped, but the package was solid: photobook, Blu-ray bonus, key ring shaped like the mascot head.
“And the streaming charts are going smoothly.”
Our attention‐grabbing stages worked: “Wheel (Day)” was climbing the streaming charts in reverse. It still couldn’t topple Youngrin, but perception was what mattered.
“Feels like the trend.”
The more famous our tracks became, the less backlash when we hit #1. Even if our streaming score was lower, we needed the reputation of “deserving” the win. Social chatter was already echoing:
“They should’ve released Drill first, what a waste”
“If they’d promoted Wheel more before release, their chart stack would’ve been higher... so sad”
“I think it was a promo fail—push Drill first, then release Wheel as follow-up, they’d have won streaming”
└ “222 agree”
The very success of the strategy was now seen by the public as its failure, making TeSTAR shine even more.
“Good.”
We could clinch the #1 on music shows and then quell any backlash. I decided I’d be satisfied with that—really, there was no more time to tweak anything.
“Your mascot head is so cute!”
“Oh, yours too.”
“My head is a tiger, so cool!”
No, that’s a tabby cat. I brushed off Yoo-jin’s unconvincing insistence and took my place in formation. In every spare moment between schedules, we shot dance clips or studied scripts and practice.
“You all checked your phones, right?”
“Yes. The reactions are good.”
I slid my phone aside and confirmed with a nod.
“And everyone’s satisfied with the songs? I’m curious how many similarities you spotted between the two titles!”
“They’ve found a lot—analysis posts already up.”
“...! Really?”
“Rae-bin must be thrilled~”
I smiled at the good news, smoothing down my dyed hair as Big Sejin and Rae-bin began donning their heads. More precisely, their faded roots.
“Huh... those won’t rinse out fast.”
Everyone’s hair was thick, so the dye held up, but the real issue was sweat running down in dyed colors. With all seven doing it, every rehearsal was going to be a mess. Their mascot heads will probably be dyed inside before the promo ends.
“They’re gonna have to work hard on upkeep.”
The bathroom was gonna be chaos for a while—but it was a worthwhile challenge, and everyone seemed happy about it.
“People love it.”
That was all that mattered. Just a month or two to endure. As for my hair... well, I did get more static, but that’s fine.
[Hi]
I shrugged and nailed the choreography to the incoming track. As that busy season flew by, a new schedule came in.
“Ooh, a spring tour!”
“We’re finally doing a concert.”
“I’m... excited!”
It ✪ Nоvеlіgһt ✪ (Official version) was our concert tour for the year. I got that—we canceled last year, so it was due time. But then I saw the scale.
“...A dome tour.”
“Yes!”
In Japan, a dome holds over 30,000. I thought it was a joke.
“We start in Tokyo, end in Osaka, six shows total...”
“Oh....”
They actually booked the venues. Apparently last quarter’s financials left execs gnawing their nails—they’d been starving for revenue after canceling the tour and going inactive. So the head office overestimated next year’s demand and reserved the arenas, including the Japanese domes.
“Hm, we’re not at that level.”
Yet...
“Uh, they’re sold out??”
“...??”
Amazingly, they were. The album must’ve taken off in Japan too—execs’ gamble from last year miraculously paid off. And it wasn’t just Japan.
“What the hell.”
The seed was Yoo-jin’s promotional idea.
