Death Mage with an SS-Rank Talent-Chapter 294
Mary Hinters, the SS-rank class holder, went to the capital city, City of Valora, after her awakening, along with her family. This was because of two reasons.
One, the Capital Academy is the top of all academies. They have the best of everything, well, almost everything.
Second, as an SS-Rank class holder, she was a high-value target for cults and other greedy or envious individuals.
The greatest enemy of humans is not the monsters, but fellow humans.
There are many who don’t like others having a better life than they do, and would do everything in their power to destroy the ones who are better than they are. Of course, they wouldn’t act publicly, only in the dark.
It was not paranoia, but a truth.
Many talented saw early graves, because they couldn’t afford protection. Sometimes, even with powerful backgrounds, many talented youth died, as rival families didn’t want their enemies to grow strong.
Most of the top powerhouses are ones with above-average talent. They are talented enough to grow in time, but not gifted enough to attract the greed or envy of others.
It was why the alliance quickly appointed a guardian to Mary and to her family as well. When she was selected to attend the academy in the capital, her family was also moved with her for everyone’s peace of mind.
Mary went through many trials, of course, with the support given to her by the Alliance, she emerged victorious and powerful than before. She even got a mentor, one of the five Human Gods, Lady Serena.
After that, her growth was on steroids. She levelled up faster and her ranks pushed up faster than anyone before. It was not just those numerical standards that were increased; she was also lucky to get resources that increased skill ranks and attributes without increasing her level.
Due to that, she gained a few rewards that would make the world go crazy. She got a Physique and Bloodline. Even her class improved, which would be very helpful as soon as she reached Rank-7.
With the help of her master, she is close to that rank. She has already reached Rank-5, three days prior.
When her master asked what she wanted to do next, she decided to return to her home city, where she was born and raised for almost two decades. Though her family is now in the capital, many of her former neighbours and school friends are all back in their home city.
Though their paths had diverged a long time back, she still wanted to help them a little bit.
Well, she learned that Alliance was giving complete missions to hunt the cultists, even to the students. So, she decided to do that in Rock City.
The capital is well defended, and she would not add any security to it by staying here. Instead, she decided to help her old home.
Her master, Lady Serena, created a fake identity for Mary. The name Mary remained the same, but her last name changed to Hunter. Using the name Mary Hunter, she obtained a patrol badge.
She started to do her duty and patrol the assigned area from the day before.
Today, after her patrolling ended, she went out strolling the streets with her master, who followed her back to Rock City. Serena, since he became powerful, has always been in big places or energy-rich areas, never in places like Rock City, where resources were very rare compared to the areas she used to stay in.
Everything was going as normally as possible, as the duo were strolling, but suddenly there was a commotion that caught their attention.
It was a man who appeared to be somewhere between thirty and forty years old. He was clearly running in panic, and he didn’t care about whom he disturbed along the path.
The interesting fact was that five ghosts were tailing him stealthily. How did they know that?
It was because the man was looking around in all directions, even though the ghosts were just following them from one direction. Also, Serena could feel that the ghosts are using some skill to keep others from perceiving them.
Both Serena and Mary perceived them because they are Light-based professionals, and Serena’s high rank also helped them see the ghosts, while others failed to do so.
They understood that the ghosts were targeting the man, not others. So, the chances of them being from the Cult were slim, but they didn’t rule out that possibility.
They can only judge once they know more about what was happening. So they decided to follow them.
As they moved, one of the ghosts suddenly slowed down for a second as they exited the market, but it started to move again, though always a bit behind the other four.
"Master, why did the ghost slow down? Did it sense us?" Mary asked in wonder.
Serena not only cloaked herself but also her student. So, there shouldn’t be a chance that someone could sense us, unless it were one of the other four human gods or ones from the monster’s side.
Looking at the situation, though, that was not the case.
None of the human gods belong to the Death profession. Also, if it were a God like person, why would they be using some low-level ghosts to sneak around?
So, even if they had sensed the duo, Mary was not afraid. She is a Rank-5 professional, and her master is a Human God. So, no matter who it was, they can’t harm either of them.
Serena rubbed her chin in thought for a second, then she spoke, "No, I don’t think that the ghost sensed us, but it was doing something. I feel that there was a good reason why it slowed down behind others".
Humans may not have been the best when it comes to instincts, but as they rank up, those instincts would improve to a high degree, which would be very helpful for one’s survival.
This was why it was not easy to kill high ranking ones, unless there is a huge disparity of power between them.
Serena’s instincts are telling her that it was something important, not just the chase, but also why the ghost slowed down, but no matter what, she couldn’t think of what it could be.
"Hmm, I believe I would soon find some answers", she thought, but has no idea why she thought that.
It was then that something happened. They heard a sound.
Whoosh!
They soon got their answers about a few things that they had been wondering for the last minute or so.
