Chapter 98: The Villain Secret Base

As time passed, Maximilian felt the sensation of chains restricting his control over shadows begin to loosen. He glanced at Onyx Blade, who seemed to be growing more and more flustered with each passing second.

"You seem to be running out of time, Onyx Blade," Maximilian said as he dodged her blade and switched his dagger to his left hand, while his right hand began manifesting shadows.

Maximilian quickly applied Inorganic Animation to control the shadows, shaping them into a second dagger.

Clank!

Sparks flew as the shadow dagger clashed with Onyx Blade’s black sword. The shadows around the dagger quickly melted and latched onto her blade.

"What!?" Onyx Blade was startled. She tried to pull her blade back but couldn’t.

Taking advantage of the moment, Maximilian drove his dagger into her back, targeting and destroying the EF inhibitor module on her suit. He deliberately pierced only deep enough to disable the device, avoiding any serious injury.

"I’ve had enough of this," Maximilian said, feigning irritation. He then conjured hundreds of shadow spears and hurled them toward Onyx Blade.

Seeing this, Onyx Blade quickly discarded her now-useless sword and used her gauntlets to deflect the spears.

The spears were deflected to the ground, and while she was focused on defending herself, the villain’s figure had already vanished into the dark sky.

"That damn villain!" Onyx Blade cursed as she looked in the direction where the black-armored figure had disappeared.

— Maximilian House —

After half an hour of traveling through the dark sky, Maximilian used the darkness as cover and landed in an alley before jumping up to the fourth floor.

After confirming that no one was around, he used Inorganic Animation to open a hole in the wall, stepped inside, and sealed it back as it was before.

He removed his armor and the sweat-soaked undershirt, storing everything in his system storage. Then he walked out of his room and headed to the bathroom to clean up, his body drenched in sweat.

Inside the shower, he had time to reflect on his actions while happily watching his Villain Points continue to rise.

Since he had already retreated from the battlefield, the fear and dread among the people were gradually subsiding—but the points still kept accumulating.

After a brief moment of reprieve in the shower, he stepped out.

"Ahhh!" a familiar voice yelped just as Maximilian walked out of the bathroom.

It was Rebecca, who had come to check on the bathroom after hearing the sound of running water. She thought there might be a leak or that Maximilian had forgotten to turn off the faucet.

Now standing in the hallway, Maximilian was naked, save for a small bath towel wrapped around his lower half.

Rebecca’s eyes involuntarily glanced downward at the noticeable bulge in his groin.

"Ahhh—ugh! I... I’m sorry!" Rebecca stammered before quickly fleeing the scene.

[You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you? (¬‿¬) ] Atherna teased.

{I’m not...} Maximilian flatly replied

Meanwhile, on the second floor, inside Rebecca’s room filled with electronics, data storage racks, and various monitor screens.

She dove onto her bed, burying herself under the blanket, rolling back and forth in utter embarrassment.

Her mind kept replaying the scene she’d witnessed: the perfectly sculpted muscles... the divine eight-pack abs she had seen...

Yes... an eight-pack, yes.... the divine eight-pack.

The line that separated the divine from mere mortals.

Just thinking about those abs made her feel like her face was about to explode.

And then... that divine V shape of his lower abs...

That bath towel... that cursed bath towel was so irritating. If only she had been just a little braver...

If only she had the courage to pull it off...

She could have... She could have...

"Kyaaaaaaa! What am I thinking?! What am I thinking?! You pervert! Kyaaaaaaaaahh!!"

Rebecca screamed, melting into her own embarrassment as she rolled back and forth on her bed.

As for Maximilian, he had already gone back to his room to sleep.

— Meanwhile, City Center —

At the city center, now filled with debris and dust from the destroyed statue, all civilians and non-combatants had already been evacuated.

A group of heroes and a battalion from the fort were engaged in combat against a swarm of mutants and villains who were slowly emerging from the hole created by the colossal dark spears.

Ratatatatata! Bang! Bang!

Gunfire echoed throughout the area. The soldiers under Theodore Monroe fought relentlessly. All of them were veterans, experienced in fighting mutants, and many had lost comrades to them. Their hatred and contempt drove this battalion to be even more ruthless.

If the battle hadn’t taken place in the heart of the city, Theodore might have already shelled the entire area, or even called in a cruise missile strike.

The IHB heroes, including Onyx Blade, were now battling villains who had surfaced after their secret underground lair was exposed.

Yes, the colossal spears thrown down by the villain in black armor to destroy the Atlas statue had penetrated deep into the secret base of the Villains and Mutants Alliance hidden beneath it.

The spear strikes were so precise that the first and largest one pierced straight through the base and destroyed its main power generator, while the second obliterated the reserve power lines.

"Arghhh! You sadistic bitch!" shouted one of the villains in blood-red armor as Onyx Blade pinned his leg to the ground using one of the spears.

Onyx Blade had discovered that these spears were surprisingly light, yet incredibly sharp and durable, easy to wield. The weight was so negligible that it felt like holding a twig rather than a weapon.

She didn’t know what material the spears were made of, but she was determined to find out once this was over.

"Ms. Onyx Blade! Is it clear over there yet?" one of the heroes called out from another part of the battlefield.

"Just pin them down. Send someone to arrest them. I’ll go investigate their secret base,"

Onyx Blade replied as she led a team of heroes down into the villains’ underground stronghold.

Inside the secret base, Onyx Blade and the group of heroes found countless horrifying and unbelievable things.

There were hundreds upon hundreds of experiments involving humans and mutants, many of them experimenting on themselves.

Half of these experiments were failures, while the other half had died due to power shortages. With no oxygen or nutrients being recycled in their tanks, the subjects had perished.

Onyx Blade led the team further in and discovered that the base was mostly self-sufficient.

It had hydroponic farms, state-of-the-art water recycling systems, and even delivery passages designed to transport supplies in from the outside.

She also uncovered a secret passage that connected this underground base to Luther Rook’s old residence, which was currently under investigation.

As she investigated further, she found human remains and body parts scattered across the lowest levels of the base. She saw the impact of the spears that had wrecked the secure room where Luther Rook had been hiding.

As for Luther Rook himself? Only half of his body remained, the spear had obliterated his lower half. Another mutant shared a similar fate, but in his case, the entire left side of his body had been turned to minced meat.

Even more disturbingly, the data Onyx Blade managed to secure revealed a conspiracy between humans and mutants. It seemed the mutants were attempting to infiltrate human society.

And worst of all, she discovered that Luther Rook was, in fact, a mutant. His ability was shapeshifting, which allowed him to perfectly imitate human appearance, right down to the DNA.

And since mutants could choose their EF abilities, this meant... there might be more mutants disguised as humans, infiltrating the upper ranks of human hierarchy.

"God... what kind of messy situation is this?" Onyx Blade muttered as she processed the shocking information uncovered within the secret base.

— Morning —

"Good morning, Rebecca," Maximilian greeted with a refreshing smile, addressing Rebecca, who always came down early to prepare the café for him.

Rebecca, on the other hand, blushed but returned the greeting.

"Ah... um... g-good morning!"

"Are you okay, Rebecca? You don’t look like you got enough sleep. You can go get some rest—I can take care of the café on my own," Maximilian said kindly, noticing the dark circles under her eyes.

"Er... no! It’s... it’s okay," Rebecca quickly replied. In truth, she hadn’t gotten a wink of sleep.

Seeing Maximilian staring at her, she quickly turned on the TV, letting the sound fill the space in hopes of covering her embarrassment and easing the tension in the air.

"Hello, and welcome to Arkadia Morning News. Last night, we received reports of a fight at the city center. The report stated that the battle took place between the heroes and a new villain, whose identity we are currently working to uncover," the news anchor reported about the incident.

Maximilian’s attention shifted from Rebecca to the news broadcast.
