Chapter 71: Mental Breakdown

Zhao Wushang and Zheng Yunqi rushed out of the booth after Fang Che, and they were on the verge of tears as they desperately implored, "Administrator Fang, please reconsider! This..."

Fang Che stood at the top of the staircase with his back to the two men as he said, "Brother Zhao, Brother Zheng, I'm going to go patrol the southeastern area, so let's meet over there. I hope you two can continue to help me eliminate more of these demonic scourges from our White Cloud Prefecture!"

His voice was quiet but resolute, and as he made his way down the staircase, each footstep sounded like the beating of a war drum, as if he were a brave warrior walking into battle.

The entire restaurant had fallen silent, and everyone was looking on with respect and reverence as Fang Che calmly made his way down the stairs.

Everyone rose to their feet before bowing in unison at the heroic figure standing before them.

Just the mere sight of him instilled within everyone an unmatched sense of safety and security.

Fang Che had already emerged from the restaurant and stepped out into the sunlight outside.

It was only after he had disappeared into the distance did a round of thunderous applause suddenly ring out within the restaurant.

Everyone could tell that those words had come straight from the bottom of Fang Che's heart, incredibly sincere and earnest.

Zhao Wushang and Zheng Yunqi were standing at the top of the staircase, listening to the raucous applause, wondering if they should put an end to their own lives before they were inevitably hunted down as traitors of the main church!

Fang Che! You've screwed us over big time! We only invited you to a meal so we could explain to you how we were able to identify those demonic church members, we don't want to be made into heroes!

Zhao Wushang and Zheng Yunqi exchanged a speechless glance with one another, and both of them could see their own despair and remorse mirrored in each other's eyes.

They had finally obtained legitimate identities, and their business had only just gotten up and running, yet they were being swept up into a war by Fang Che!

The two of them could already anticipate having to face the ferocious wrath of Helmsmaster Starlight...

Tang Zheng was walking along behind Fang Che, his heart brimming with pride.

He felt like he had been elevated to a higher level of morality and heroism just by association with Fang Che!

His work felt more meaningful and venerable than ever, and all of his past cowardice and apprehension had completely evaporated.

In fact, he wanted nothing more than to be able to fight a demonic church member to the death in this very instant!

Fang Che turned around to meet Tang Zheng's admiring gaze, and he was rather taken aback by the tremendous battle intent emanating from the latter's body.

He had only delivered that rousing address in order to back Zhao Wushang and Zheng Yunqi into a corner, but it had clearly had the unintentional effect of lighting a fire in Tang Zheng's belly!

Of course, he wasn't going to dump a bucket of cold water over his head at a time like this.

Perhaps this would be a catalyst for Tang Zheng's growth. The continent could certainly use all of the help that it could get.

As Fang Che continued to walk along, a look of grim contemplation appeared on his face.

The Mountain Moving Sect was supposed to have been a secluded, neutral entity, but it was clearly already rotten to the core.

How many of these sects and hidden clans existed all over the continent?

They had claimed countless scenic mountains and valleys, revered as otherworldly immortals, and they had grown accustomed to enjoying all of the luxuries the world had to offer while ignoring all of the evil and suffering in the world.

They possessed immense power, yet secluded themselves from the rest of the world, leaving all of the dirty work to the Protectionists and Guardians.

While the Protectionists and the Guardians were officially the dominant forces on the continent, Fang Che knew that there were many clans that didn't answer to the Guardians, and there were also many sects that the Guardians didn't even know the locations of.

Would they take action in times of peril for the continent? Yes!

It was undeniable that there were countless disciples from these sects battling for the masses and even sacrificing themselves in the process, but was that the entirety of their power? No. In fact, it was from it!

The true top dogs of these sects would never place themselves in any danger.

They observed the world with detachment, and at the very most, they would only heave a forlorn sight to lament the state of the world, then return to their cultivation as if none of that had anything to do with them.

Some of the most powerful sects even had warriors that weren't inferior to the likes of Xue Fuxiao and Duan Xiyang, yet they couldn't care less about the suffering of the world.

Even if doomsday arrived, they wouldn't do anything unless their sects were being directly attacked.

Unless you killed their sons, they wouldn't put their lives on the line against anyone.

Were these people truly transcendent beings with no desires and attachments to the world? Of course not, it was just a pretentious ruse.

Try killing their wives and sons, or try demolishing their sects, and you'd get to see just how "detached" they really were.

Fang Che had never been able to understand these people, whether it be in his past lifetime or this one.

What did they cultivate for? Just to be able to live longer?

In his past life, Fang Che had felt extremely frustrated with these people, yet also powerless to do anything.

However, he had a simple solution in this lifetime.

You don't want to come out? Fine! I'll just have to get Night Demon to pay your sect a little visit!

I'll kill as many of your disciples and loved ones as it takes for you to come out and seek vengeance against the Church of the Self-Righteous!

That afternoon, Fang Che slew six more demonic church members on patrol.

The two men from the merits department didn't even bother to go back after his morning patrol, instead continuing to follow him around in the afternoon, and sure enough, all six of his victims were demonic church members.

Once word of this traveled back to the Hall of Protectionists, everyone was astonished.

Fang Che had taken out fifteen Lords from the main church in just a single day!

He had received 70% of the merit points from taking out that stronghold in the drum tower, amounting to 1,760 merit points, and that had already taken his total from 7,910 to 9,670. These fifteen Lords granted him an additional 1,500 merit points, bringing his new total to 11,170 merit points, well beyond the mark required for a promotion to become a second-rank administrator.

Not one could argue with his feats, and all that was required was a seal of approval from the hall master before his promotion would be made official.

Many of his colleagues were extremely envious of him, but they had no complaints. Fang Che had won them all over with the weight of his accomplishments.

However, many people were also beginning to grow rather concerned for him. He had already been the target of a retaliatory attack, and there was a very real chance that his reckless streak was going to get him killed!

Zhao Ying'er was seated in the administration hall with an anxious expression, waiting for Fang Che's return so that she could tell him to be more careful and less reckless.

However, he didn't return to the Hall of Protectionists after his afternoon patrol.

Zhao Wushang and Zheng Yunqi returned to the escort agency, looking as if they were mourning the loss of a close relative.

Their companions rushed out excitedly to greet them.

"I heard you went to go see Administrator Fang! How did it go?"

"Man, fifteen in one day! That'll teach them! It's my turn to make reports tomorrow, right? I know a bunch of people that Administrator Fang can kill!"

The two of them could barely hear the excited chatter ringing out around them as they trudged arduously into the escort agency, looking as if their legs were filled with lead.

Everyone was finally beginning to realize that something wasn't right.

"What's wrong?"

The two of them remained silent with dazed looks on their faces, and they all but collapsed onto chairs in the room.

"What's wrong? Say something!"

"We... We screwed up," Zhao Wushang blurted out, seemingly on the verge of tears.

"How? Did Administrator Fang not buy your story?"

"He did. The problem is that our story was too convincing. Administrator Fang was extremely moved..."

"What? How is that a problem? Isn't that a good thing?"

"He was so moved that he decided to set our escort agency as a heroic role model!" Zhao Wushang wailed.

Everyone was stunned into silence at this extraordinary development.

Heroic role models? Us? Do those two things really belong in the same breath?!
