Danmachi: Is It Wrong to Be the Main Character in Orario?-Chapter 814: Another Path
"The ’Falna System’ allows adventurers who bear its crest to maintain an un-decaying physical state until the moment they die."
"Oh."
Ais nodded blankly, completely unaware of how explosive Bell’s words truly were.
Seeing her reaction, Bell instantly understood she hadn’t absorbed any of it. The muscles on his face twitched. Still, to make sure she understood, he emphasized the crucial point again.
"Ais, listen carefully. This is the true success of the ’Falna System.’ Remember these words. When you return and tell Riveria and the others, you’ll get to see their shocked expressions."
"Oh!!"
Her tone immediately brightened.
Ais’s eyes lit up in excitement—she was very interested in seeing Finn and the others stunned, especially Riveria. That alone made her listen more attentively than ever.
Bell continued.
"The human body is constantly changing. In youth, it grows; in old age, it decays. A person’s physical condition rises and falls with age."
"The average lifespan of a normal human is about 80 years at most, and their peak period is from 18 to 35. During this time, an ordinary person’s body reaches its best state. But once past that age, their physical abilities drop rapidly."
"This is fatal for adventurers. Their peak period is simply too short."
Human life was too fleeting.
With less than twenty years at their peak—could they really suppress all the monsters on the surface in that span?
Even a pig could answer that.
"So the gods developed the ’Falna System.’ They deepened the link between humans and gods, allowing gods to share their divine characteristic of ’immutability’ with their Familia members through the system."
Bell couldn’t help feeling respect for those gods.
The ones who created the Falna System were truly bold—sharing a part of their divine traits with mortals to extend the adventuring prime of their Familia.
"Immutability" was a troublesome trait for gods, but for the people of the Genkai, it was the most beneficial blessing.
Ais raised her hand again.
"Teacher, since the gods share their ’immutability’ with us, does that mean we can gain eternity from it?"
Bell stared at her in surprise—he hadn’t expected her papaya-brain to ask something so sharp.
"In theory, if the gods actively tried, they really could give their Familia members the same eternal life they possess."
"But the moment that happens, eternity becomes humanity’s greatest shackle. No—more precisely, humans who cannot resist the erosion of time will eventually break within eternity. And the direction of that change is usually the worst one."
"Perhaps because of this, when the gods created the Falna System, they abandoned the idea of granting the ’immutability’ trait."
If gods bestowed true immutability onto mortals, humanity would spiritually collapse one by one.
Human decline wasn’t limited to the body—it included the spirit.
Ordinary humans couldn’t withstand the erosion of infinite time. They would inevitably be the side to go mad.
In truth, the gods had shown great wisdom.
Humanity shines precisely because life is finite. Endless life would only corrupt that brilliance.
"Of course, the gods didn’t completely seal off the path to eternity."
"The ultimate state of Adventurer Lv.10 is the clear path they left. Once someone reaches Lv.10, they can fully transcend the limits of ordinary humans and become a ’demigod,’ gaining eternal time."
Ais nodded, though she didn’t fully understand, quietly committing every word to memory.
Seeing that she had taken it in, Bell moved on.
"That concludes everything about the Falna System. Now let’s talk about another classification of power."
"That is the path I’ve chosen to follow."
Huh?
Ais felt something off. Replaying Bell’s words carefully, she pieced something together.
"Teacher, after choosing the ’Falna System,’ is it even possible to choose another path?"
"That is absolutely impossible!"
Bell denied it instantly.
"Different paths of power conflict at their core. The differences are too great for them to coexist. You can only choose one."
A person can choose their path to power, but only one—never both.
But then Ais asked the natural question.
"Then how can you say you’ve chosen another path now?"
"Because I plan to abandon the ’Falna System.’"
"!?"
Ais’s mouth fell open. She forgot to speak, simply staring at him, stunned.
After a long moment, she finally snapped back.
"To abandon the Falna System? Then all your training... won’t it all be wasted?"
"Wasted? Not quite."
Bell smiled casually, amusement flickering in his gaze.
"Well then, Ais—do you think I’m the type of man who wastes time?"
"If I knew something would end in futility, do you think I’d keep spending time on a path destined to go nowhere?"
Ais fell silent, then shook her head firmly.
"Absolutely not! You’re not that kind of person, Teacher."
Good answer. Bell was satisfied she understood him. After teaching her for so long, if she couldn’t even grasp something this basic about him, he truly would’ve been disappointed.
"Yes. You’re exactly right. I don’t waste time on things destined to fail."
"Through my research, I discovered that the power adventurers receive from the Falna System doesn’t vanish even if their Familia God dies. It remains in their body, merely sealed. Once they convert to another Familia, that hidden power surfaces again."
"This confirms it—the foundational strength obtained through the Falna System is never stripped away. It only remains sealed by the god’s power."
"That is why I needed the Falna System—to accumulate my strength."
"And when I reach the peak of Lv.9, I will completely abandon the Falna System and redirect all that power onto another path."
