Daily life of a cultivation judge-Chapter 955: Something I want to tell you
Ma Yuan stood dazed for a bit waiting for more, he had no idea what he was expecting, but his whole interaction with Song Chuanli felt surreal. When he came here he didn’t know what to expect, well, he maybe did, he thought he would be under the guidance of some stern teacher being taught the basics of the nurture and care of a large number of spiritual plants and herbs ranging from the earth grade to the sky grade at most.
As someone who was a self-taught herbologist, all he knew came from the legacy he found, and while it was indeed valuable as it helped him become a top tier orange grade herbologist and self-taught at that, he was still cognizant of the fact that there was so much he didn’t know. His skills may have reached that of a top tier orange grade herbologist but in terms of knowledge, he didn’t feel like he was one.
All he knew about herbology was centered on the information provided to him within that legacy, so all he had seen and understood was from a very narrow scope. There were so many fundamental truths and wisdom he didn’t know.
Yes, he was a top-tier orange grade herbologist but if he were to compare his bank of knowledge and information on herbology against a low-tier orange grade herbologist from a well-established organization with thousands upon thousands of years of experience in herbology, he would likely fall short.
He may edge out a victory in terms of skill, but when it came to theoretical understanding, he would likely lose out, especially if said opponent came from a place that was well-established like the Summerfield Kingdom.
Yes, skill was important, but accumulation of theoretical understanding was just as important. It helped one maximize their skills and even provide sudden flashes of insights on how to expand it.
Ma Yuan had a feeling that the reason why he never came close to sensing the path to becoming a blue-grade herbologist despite his long-standing dedication to the craft and being stuck at the top tier of the orange grade had all to do with the large gaps he had in his foundations and his narrowed scope of vision.
Everything he knew was centered solely on one person’s perspective and since he was not a reincarnation of that person, it would be difficult for him to improve relying solely on a singular perspective. As such over the years he bought countless tomes, and scrolls, went to countless exchanges for rogue cultivators where he held discussions with other herbologists and even alchemists, and went to conventions hosted by some well-renowned figures and organizations with expertise in the area.
While doing all that helped, it also made him aware of just how big the hole in his foundation was. When he started working at Yang Qing’s abode, it went without saying that after he interacted with Yang Qing on matters herbology, that issue reared its ugly head. Yang Qing ended up giving him tonnes of books, scrolls, and tomes from his personal library that centered on the basics of the basics, and when he suggested bringing him here, Ma Yuan had automatically assumed it would be a continuation of what he was doing.
He didn’t expect that he would land in an immortal-like lair filled with dozens and dozens of plants that had the potential of reaching the ascendant grade. There was nothing basic here and the training plan itself wasn’t normal either, seeing as how the following four cleansing beetles for the next two months.
"Now that I think about it, it is better that way," Ma Yuan suddenly muttered to himself as he looked at the countless rare and precious spiritual plants around him.
With the presence and quality exuded by every single plant present, he would be too nervous and self-conscious to touch even the one with the lowest tier amongst them, which from what he could see was the cloudsilk grass which was a low tier sky grade material, but from the luster and the purity of presence and energy it radiated, it could easily be confused for a plant that reached the top tier of sky grade.
In all his life he had never seen cloudsilk grass of that quality and before today, he didn’t even think they could be cultivated to the sky grade. Most of those he had interacted with were at the low to the middle tier of the earthgrade with a few at the top tier of the earth grade but not one ever reached the standard of the one before him, and the unbelievable part was, he could tell that the cloudsilk grass before him were young, none of them were more than 4 years old, yet they had reached the sky grade, while the earth grade ones he saw were all at least 100 years old, with those at the top tier even hitting the 500 year mark.
Feeling increasingly at ease with being a spectator, Ma Yuan gathered whatever courage his still-stiff legs could master and made his way to the four cleansing beetles.
Maybe because of the shock the place gave him when he first walked in and still continued to do so, or because he was told the four beetles were in the palace realm, Ma Yuan felt his insides churn in fear and anxiety the closer he came to them and when he finally arrived where they were, which was beneath the whispering oak tree, his mouth refused to move and he blanked out, and in the nervousness of it all, he ended up overreacting and saying something he instantly regretted.
"Please don’t eat me senior, I have a daughter!"
His legs and his body as a whole felt like he was carrying tonnes of rocks, but when it came to begging for his life, that heaviness vanished and he was as limber as a cat with how fast he kneeled and bowed his head to the ground as he begged for his life.
"I am glad I didn’t tell him Chief Song was a gold-grade herbologist. If I did, he would have likely passed out," thought Yang Qing as he turned his face away from Ma Yuan’s actions. He couldn’t handle the embarrassment and Song Chuanli’s words didn’t help one bit.
"I see you didn’t slack in teaching him everything you know," Song Chuanli said, showing a rare teasing smile on his face which seemed to grow wider in response to Yang Qing’s reddened neck and ears.
"Can we just start," Yang Qing said in an almost pleading tone as he even stopped plucking one of the diamond peaches and made his way a few meters ahead where there were two round clay platforms that had been inscribed with five trigrams symbolizing the five elements.
"Before we start there was something I wanted to tell you."

Yang Qing who had already removed his straw handles paused his right foot that was about to step on one of the platforms. He turned back to face Song Chuanli.
"I’ll be leaving tomorrow," said Song Chuanli.
Yang Qing’s eyes widened slightly in surprise.
