"Do you share the same thoughts too, sect master Xie Yuan?" asked Yu Hui.

"It is the thoughts of the entire sect, not just mine or his," curtly answered Xie Yuan.

Fan Ha who had already been on edge finally exploded.

"What are you two thinking?!" she asked lividly, losing her look of calm.

Her current expression made Fan Cai flinch as he had never seen her as angry, or even she had been at some point, it wasn’t as visible as it was at the moment.

With the way she looked, from her twitching eyes, heavy breathing, clenched fists, and gritted teeth, even a blind man could tell she was mad.

"Xie Yuan, I would expect such an action from him not you?!" Fan Ha added as her trembling finger pointed at Meng Jiayi who was nonchalantly sipping his wine.

Xie Yuan sighed as she put on a comforting smile.

"Sister Fan Ha just the you want to protect us to the point of selling your entire life, we too have things we want to protect that we are willing to lay down everything.

We have been compromising and compromising over the years, all in the hopes that we could extend our time and a miracle would happen in that time, but in doing so we harmed ourselves.

Our dao hearts caught dust because of those actions. Why is it that the quality of our numbers has been dwindling with every passing year?

Every compromise we made, we didn’t just lose the things we compromised on, we lost our path forward. You lose your heart, you lose your path. Cultivation isn’t just about talent, it is about relentless dedication, effort, and a dauntless will to continuously strive to improve yourself.

If we let you and your child sacrifice your freedoms for us, will there be a Starlight Lake Sect left in the end?

Our end will be guaranteed even without the Yu clan’s efforts. Right now producing middle-stage experts is already difficult for us, and with time if we keep going as we are, cowering, and making excuses, it will not be too long before breaking through to the palace realm becomes a hard task for us.

If that happens, then what? What fate awaits us when even having palace realm experts becomes an unachievable task, what then?

You know what will truly happen to us then," Xie Yuan said with a heavy voice, her eyes on Fan Ha.

"So we have to do this, Sister Fan Ha. It is not just for you, it is for ourselves. We need to refine our hearts and remind ourselves of which sect we belong to.

We need to honor the spirit of those who came before us and those coming after us on what it means to be a disciple of the Starlight Lake Sect, otherwise, the sect will truly be lost to obscurity and it won’t be because of the Yu clan, or any other thing but us," Xie Yuan said as she pointed to her heart.

Fan Ha stared intently at Xie Yuan before finally sighing in defeat once she saw the firm resolve radiating within her eyes.

"Fine, do what you want," Fan Ha calmly said as she took her seat. Her expression suddenly shifted to one of anger as she turned to face Meng Jiayi, who had his eyebrows shifting awkwardly when he sensed her gaze.

"You old codger you finally turned the sect crazy just like you? Always reckless. Are you pleased with yourself?"

"I don’t want to be called reckless by you, all things considered," Meng Jiayi lightly said, as he did all he could to avoid all eye contact with her.

"So, what do you plan to do now? If you are still intent on going through with the contract, know it’s not for us," he added, with an air of cheeky smugness about him.

Fan Ha looked like she wanted to punch him, but ultimately reason and peace won out in the end. With how bony and weak Meng Jiayi was, her punch would likely send him to an early grave. As insufferable as he was, she still needed him around, if nothing else but to give him an earful of how insufferable he was.

"How did I end up like this?" thought Fan Ha as she sensed the tempestuous emotions welling inside of her.

Before she walked into the Starlight Lake Sect, she wasn’t an easily riled-up individual. She wasn’t the most emotional either.

She was methodical and pragmatic in her actions, choosing the option that suited her best. Even back then when she met Liu Jie at the shores of the Millionsfold Treasure Ocean, she was the one who approached him and she did so after studying him for weeks since his arrival as she had done with others before him.

The region was tumultuous for domain experts, much less palace realm experts, and as a palace realm expert herself, and a spirit beast at that, she needed to form a partnership with others if she wanted to survive there.

She couldn’t choose someone more powerful than her, because then she was liable to get betrayed and exploited, and she couldn’t choose someone considerably weaker than her because then she would be the one carrying them, defeating the purpose of a partnership.

Liu Jie had been considerably weaker than her, but he had a few things that made Fan Ha choose him as an appropriate comrade. One was his talent, and the other was the anchored platform he had access to which had been laid at the Millionsfold Treasure Ocean by the domain ancestor of the Starlight Lake Sect. Truth be told, the latter was the driving reason she sought him out as a partner.

Anchoring platforms served as safe harbors in the Millionsfold Treasure Ocean and because they were built within the ocean, they also doubled as excellent cultivation spots. It took considerable resources and the strength of a domain expert to build a platform in the Millionsfold Treasure Ocean; even then, not many domain experts could do it.

As far as Fan Ha knew in her years of residing there, most platforms in the area that domain experts built, a fifth-stage domain expert had built the weakest of them and that platform was not large either, about 10 meters in size able to just accommodate two people.

Also, most of these platforms were in the outer regions of the ocean, closer to the shore.

But the one Liu Jie had access to, despite being built by a third-stage domain expert, was almost 100 meters in size and while it was still closer to the shores, it was slightly deeper in when compared to known platforms made by middle-stage domain experts.

To date, Fan Ha still didn’t know how he had accomplished it, and back then, when she discovered Liu Jie she had been half tempted to kill and steal the platform from him if it wasn’t her fear of drawing the ire of the domain expert behind him which at the time didn’t know was dead, or if she wasn’t worried about other protective means that domain expert may have left in place at the platform.

Those platforms were the blood and sweat of these domain experts, and as such they went to great lengths to protect them, one of which was imbuing their spiritual wills into them, which was like a spectral copy of them, albeit slightly weaker, but even weak they had the strength to effortlessly obliterate anyone below the domain realm.

These copies would remain even after their deaths, which was the reason as alluring as platforms were, most avoided them.

For most of the palace realms who had lost their lives in the Millionsfold Treasure Ocean, about half of them met their ends in those platforms.

Thus Fan Ha made the safe bet of befriending Liu Jie which wasn’t that hard considering how weak he was and how dangerous the place was. Fan Ha seized the moment when she saved his life, and was direct about her intentions which was what sealed the deal between the two.

Their interaction since then had been from a pragmatic approach from her end, even when she saved his life a couple of times after that, it was always because it was the best choice and not out of emotion and this included even the time she sacrificed the embryo of the ascendant grade treasure.
